Pilgrim's Progress ln the year of our Lord MDCCCCXI drd a llttle band of elghty Pllgrlms consort together that they mwht ln company wlth one another tray el from the Land of lgnorance to the Celestlal C 1ty of Wlsdom And lo they found that they were not alone for three other bands of Pll rlms dnd lllxCYVlSC Journey to that same fair clty And all drd straxghtway show themselves ready to rldlcule the neyy tray elers Then dld It come to pass that ln the hrst vear they drd fro forth on an aerlcultural expedltlon Wlth then stately Leader Massena -Xnd at that tlme yy ere many spades of dlrt turned oy er Xnd they dld stop at Pllerxm Culver s home where m my thlngs were explalned to them And they drd wax so mlvhtly ln thoufrht and numbers that the Hoof beneath them dld QIVC way and many were the crxes whlch fxlled the axr -Xeam as the band pursued thexr humble way they dld arrlve at another stoppmfr place Pllgrlm Tomas and here drd they refrale themselves and pass sey eral pleasant hours wxthm yyhlle wlthout dtd another band of l llgrlms molest them Thus was thelr journey made joyous and avaln they dnd stop at a beautlful wooded place and one part of the band dld chase the other part over fields and hllls ln great merrlment And now they went a llttle farther along thelr road untll they saw ahead of them many fixes and about these they did seat themselves and partalce of many thlnffs ln thlS place they were welcomed bv Pxlfrrxm Russel ln the second vear of their journey d1d the Pllgrlms turn aslde 1nto Vanlty Falr whereln they drd tease and torment a weal-:er band of Pllaflmi who drd enter that year New Leaders came thls year and all were Joyfully recelved by these knowledge seelclng bands bread 'and mustard Xnd avam as they W indered along a lonely hl hway they dld come to a ghostly hollow about whlch they were led by yy elrd spef tres and many slnster faces dld loolc down upon them Much was their amazement when thev xt last alter trlpplnff and Qlllllllilllif oycx upheayen vround dlcl sc e a SIUD and on this sxffn was the name of one of thelr fellow travelers Pllvrxm l 'zrsons l uh eyent won for them new Glory for they affaln showed their powers when stoppmef at PllgI'1IT1 l'ulton s home thev were assalled by many hostlle weapons wielded by abler bands who had pursued them But thlstlme did they acqult tht mselves mclously and a llst of the l ll rims was placed at rest with the other relics on the corner stone of thexr new haven to be lhen path rlld now lead them through the Barren l'1elds ofTo1l 'md up the dxfhcult hxlls of Examlnatnons Verlly lt seemed as lf lt had no end But at last they dld QCYCSIYC an openlne . . . They did now excite themselves over the question of the erection of a new refuge which now stands ready to accomoda e many more Pilgrims Now behold this valiant band did begin their third year of Wandermgs and truly was this year one of exceedin great pleasure and prosperity For their Wanderlngs did lead them to a Fairer home large and happy And this year did they stop at lnterpreter Smith s home and they were given much to refresh them and were made more Joy ous Now it came to pass that a Spirit called Genius did descend upon this gallant band and lo the Spirit gave unto them Athletic and Literary Pilgrims And Envy arose among the other bands and they long anxiously and with expectant heart for the Visit of the Spirit Genius And now did this Band seek to leave to other Pllgrims a book in which all their deeds were set down Long and zealously did they strive to do so but many things did prevent its accomplishment Then did the third year wax old and this band did lead to the Castle of Hospitality another band soon to leave the Land of Pilgrimage and they did regale them and send them on their way refreshed Thus did end the third year Now it did come to pass that this band of Pil rims with numbers diminished did reach the last year of its so Journ Fl he band did greet this year several new leaders but they proved themselves wise Pilgrims It was yyith great sadness these Xnd this year did the Pilgrims wander in a daze and they did see ahead of them a brilliant li hted place the home of Pil rim Herrlnf And they did stop here and enjoy themselyes many hours Here were tht lfaders lynn a chance to see themselyes as others saw them This time did they stop near a Great wilderness by the name of Petzniclc and many eatables were disposed of Now these Pilgrims in reward for ability and worthiness were alloyy ed to wear pin representin their ovyn band But verlly did the end approach and as in a dream the Pilgrims saw the end For the mists did clear and behold at a little distance hence they saw the Celestial City of Wisdom And at the narrow gate stood two hvures to welcome the band And besides the figures there were Rolls of Parchment And each did yearn to possess one roll For venly it is the passport to the Celestial City of Wisdom the City that hath no bounds M l T Pilgrims did part with Leader Parsons who had been with them through Valleys and the Fields of Calculations in two years of travel.
