Out of School Life, into Life's School WHAT WE WERE, BEFORE WHAT WE ARE lst Row-Howard Graber, Bill Marko, Donald Perry, Esther Pinkley, Annetta Coffey, Gene Lance, Dick Hall, Jim Smith, QUnknown.j 2nd Row--Virgil Christian, Charles Peppard, Wanda Craft, Shirley Howell, fUnknownJ, Eleanor West, Esther Woodw'ard, Richard Beichler. 3rd Row-Richard Peppard, Dean Litman, Donna Finley, Dick Ream, fllnknownj, Bill Pate, jerry Lance, fUnknownJ, Mrs. QMillerj Erdos. Back in the year of 1936 we were just another group of first graders. We were a group of twenty-five when entering school. During these twelve years of school, we have lost and gained different members of the class. Our losses were out numbered by gains, so as a result we have a Senior Class of seventeen. Wie still have but seven members who survived all twelve years of school at Creston. They are Dick Ream, Virgil Christian, Eleanor West, Howard Graber, Bill Marko, Annetta Coffey, and Gene Lance. LPAGE TWELVEI I949 ANNUAL DEDICATION At this time and space, we as fellow classmates in our Freshmen and Sophomore years, wish to express our mutual feelings in the absence of John Clark. Formerly being in Akron he joined us as a Freshman. He was a great asset to our Basketball and Baseball teams, and we were all deeply stricken to learn of his untimely death. SENIOR CLASS HISTORY QFreshmenj 1945 - 1946 Twentyfnine faces were eagerly facing the front of the room in September of 1945. Were we ever big now. Why in four years we were going to make the best class that ever graduated from Creston High School. Along with a lot of planning we chose the following officers to govern our class. Presidentg Paul Lenagcher, Vice Presidentg Jerry Lance, Secretaryg Bill Antchutz, Treasurer, Wanda Craft, Student Councilg john Clark and Esther Russell. As our adviser we chose Miss Mcllvaine. Even if we were grown up and in High School now we weren't too old to have fun. We all bundled up for a hayride which was our first Freshman party. We all had a nice time. We were gifted with two new boys, jim Weliver and john Clark. However jim left us before the year was up. In May, twenty-nine very happy freshmen, rather bored of being just fresh- men, retired to their homes for a three month vacation. QSOphomorej 1946 - 1947 In the fall of 1946, 21 members of our original Freshman Class returned to take their very honored places in the front of the study hall. During the summer we gained 2 members, Zella Slater and Anton Dyke. We chose as our officers the following: President, john Clark, Vice President, Eleanor West, Secretary, Zella Slater, Treasurer, Virgil Christian, Student Council, Wanda Craft and Ralph McClintock. We chose as our adviser Miss Smith. IPAGE THIRTEENl I949 ANNUALC - CLASS HISTORY It was in this class that we chose our class colors and flowers. The colors were to be maroon and gold, and our flower was to be the yellow rose. Among our parties and activities we had a hay ride and a corn roast. Every- one had a wonderful time. Toward the end of the year we lost quite a few of our classmates who either got married or just quit school. However in May the remainder of our class turned away rather anxious for the day when they could return as upper classmen. Uuniorj 1947 - 1948 Again we return to our Winter Home , branded with the very honored title of Junior. At the beginning of the year we got our class sweaters which were maroon and gold. We also received our rings. We were all very much grieved to hear of the death of one of our members, john Clark, who was famous to us as a great athlete. We were very pleased to have chosen the following as our leaders for this year. President, Annetta Coffeyg Vice President, Eleanor Westg Secretary, Esther Russellg Treasurer, Martha Dravenstott. We chose Mr. Rich as our adviser. Our Class play Professor, How Could You turned out to be a great success. Everyone liked it very much. To be a memory in our minds for many years to come is the event of our junior and Senior Banquet. It was held at Mozenas and everyone was pleased with the meal and the entertainment. In the Spring a very happy family of juniors were very anxious to get away from pencils and books. i fSeniorsj 1948- 1949 We finally made it and our class, which has sifted down to seventeen, is very proud to be the first senior class ever to be gifted with a private room. We were all very happy to welcome Virginia Landis into our family of seniors. We chose our officers which turned out to be the following: President, Esther Russellg Vice President, Dick Ream, Secretary, Eleanor Westg Treasurer, Virgil Christian. On the Student Council was Bill Marko and Stanley Miller. As our adviser we chose Mr. Rich. Our class play entitled, Home Sweet Homicide, turned out to be a great success. As in previous years, we were given the privilege of taking over the job of the teachers for a day. We all had a great time and gained a lot of experience. In May, our class, which has finally succeeded in completing twelve years of school, realize that we are going from School life, to Life's School. -ESTHER RUSSELL OUR CLASSES' MISTAKE When God gave out brains, we thought he said trains, and we missed ours. When God gave out noses, we thought he said roses, and ordered big ones. When God gave out ears, we thought he said beersg and ordered two large ones. THE SENIOR CLASS OF CRESTON HIGH SCHOOL IPAGE SIXTEEN1 l'949 ANNUAL CLASS PROPHECY It's the year nineteen hundred and fifty-nine, The grass is green and the sky is blue. I wonder what became of those classmates of mine, Wlmo graduated, in number, so few. But come with me and we'll look around, To see if those classmates can still be found. The sun of a beautiful August day was just beginning to set when Karen called her father and three brothers from the fields. The days work had just been finished and they were all looking forward to a good evening of enjoyment. just who is the farmer? It is none other than D. I. Rich. With his slippers and pipe Mr. Rich and his wife had just seated themselves on the porch when he happened to think of the Crestonia. He called for Dick jr. to bring it. When Dick jr. brought it he asked why he always read it before or after supper. Well , said father, I used to teach school where this paper is being pub- lished. In those years 1947-1948 through 1948-1949 the town was quite small but now it has grown quite a bit. Picking up the paper he began to read, when suddenly he broke the silence by saying Wilma, read this! SENIOR CLASS OF 1949 HAS REUNION The class of 1949 were all invited to attend the class reunion at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Dick Ream on August 4, 1959. They spent most of the day getting acquainted after ten years of not seeing each other. All of a sudden there was a great roar coming from the front of the house. We all peered around the corner to see and there she was, none other than Zella Slater. We might have known it was she for she always roared the motor when she was learning to drive in school. When she came in I got her to tell me all about what she was doing. She had just come up from Texas and decided to drop in. She said she is living on a beautiful ranch and instead of bringing her hve children she left them home with their father. While talking with Zella, Eleanor West came up to chat a while. She in- formed me that Esther Russell and Virginia Landis were sorry but they could not be present because of their work. All three were in the same business. Seems they still were continuing their Lonely Hearts Club since they were in school but it had grown to be much larger. After telling me about them, Eleanor told me about Annetta Coffey. Seems she had gone on to college and after all her hard work became the president of Dennison College. Speaking of colleges, I often wondered what became of Bill Marko. After looking through the crowd I finally spied him. I hadn't realized I had changed IPAGE SEVENTEENI I949 ANNUAL so, because he didn't recognize me, but after I introduced myself we were very good friends. I asked him what was keeping him busy. He said after going through college he decided to be a teacher and was now teaching at Creston, Still thinking that he might have gotten married, I asked if he had and sure enough he had a wife and to my surprise three little Markos. While speaking with Bill, Stanley Miller came into my mind because he always was with Bill during our school days. I learned Stanley had built his fathers' farm into a very large dairy. It is the biggest in Wayne County so I was informed. It seems Stanley hasn't been married very long. He had to wait till Patty was out of school which was four years and to add to this he left to go to college to study farming for three years. Ralph McClintock has been doing very good for himself so I heard. He started his work by working as a mechanic. He now has a large garage somewhere in the west which explained his absence. Gene Lance has been making very well so we heard. Since graduating from school he has taken complete control of the La Reine Market and has even changed the name. It now stands as the La Reine and Lance Market, the biggest market in Creston. While on the subject of Lances there is another Lance that comes to my mind. That is junior. Junior, after taking a great interest in sports in school Qespecially baseballj decided to try our for the League. He is now with the Cleveland Indians who have a very good idea that he will become the best first sacker they have ever had. I learned from junior that Howard Graber has followed his fathers footsteps and has become a very successful farmer. He has even followed his footsteps as far as to get married. While looking around the crowd to see if I should know any other persons, my glance fell upon a very nice looking gentleman. I almost forgot that we had a minister in the class. To my great surprise and I know everybody else, Bob Hart became a very good minister. He invited me to attend his church and said that I would not miss it for it was located on the square of Jackson and in front there was a sign Holy Roller. After talking to Bob, Bill Anshutz came up to say hello. He said that his 'business has not been very good and has decided to move to another state. His reason he claimed, there were too many vetenarians in the state of Ohio. Lowell Beyeler is trying to bring back the real civilization by selling horses and buggies, including baby buggies. Last but not least comes the bachelor of the class. We often wondered why Virgil Christian never married and finally his sister told us. He never asked a girl for a date. Good enough reason!! And now for myself, I've done too many numerous things to tell so I will end. -Martha Dravenstott. IPAGE THIRTY-EIGHTJ , J I949 ANNUAL OFF THE RECORD Another series of the girls basketball tournament came to an end recently. The records show that the Senior team of girls are the Champs. They were also honored with this same title last year. The Senior team went straight through the whole series of games without losing a single game, but with a few close calls. This Champion team consisted of only six, but all of the Senior girls, namely, Eleanor West, Annetta Coffey, Zella Slater, Martha Dravenstott, Virginia Landis and Esther Russell. They did a fine job and deserve a degree of honor. The team that came in with a very close second place was the Freshmen girls. This team of uprising competition consisted of Patty Reese, Jane DeChant, Elloween Rook, Marcia Rhoads, Patty Viall, and Sue Robinson. They also deserve a lot of credit for their hard work in runner-up. Since our girls basketball is rather roughly organized we do not have regular forwards, guards, center forwards, managers, or captains. The girls acting as referrees for these games have an honorable mention and also Mrs. Streett who has made it possible for us to have these games and who taught us what we know about our girls basketball. MAY DAY Ah! What is so rare as a day in May? Especially May thirteenth. Yes, May Day at Creston High School! This year the Student Council and Y-Teen Girls decided to make May Day a whole day affair. All morning things buzzed as final preparations were in progress. At one thirty the ceremonies began. The High School Band, followed by the May Queen herself perched on the back seat of a shiny blue convertible, paraded from the school downtown. Next came floats of all kinds, silly ones and beauti- ful ones, parading for the first prize. Following the parade, the Coronation was held out on the front lawn of the school. The announcement of the Queen was heralded by the two paiges, Kay Harman and Jeanette Nalley, dressed in short white skirts carrying trumpets. Next came the attendants, Virginia Landis, Lloyd Marcum, Martha Dravenstott, Bill Anshutz, Barbara Bixler, Paul Muhollan, Charlotte Rook, Bob Rhoades, Barbara Cabell, John DeChant, Gerry Phouts, Richard Beichler, Jane DeChant, Robert Hart, Pat Reese and Noble Rook. The girls were dressed in pastel formals, the boys in dark suits. Both the sedate crowner, Eleanor West, and our beautiful blonde Queen, Sally Reese, were dressed in gowns of white, carrying arm boquets of mixed flowers. Little Marcia Gordon and Darlene Hilson were flower girls. Rex Mclntire server as crown bearer. The Y-Teen Girls honored the Queen and court by the traditional May Pole Dance. Everyone flocked to the ball diamond at three o'clock to witness the double- header game between Sterling and Creston. At six thirty a hot dog roast was enjoyed by hungry boys and girls alike. The Queen reigned once again at nine o'clock when a formal ball and box social was presented in her honor. About twelve o'clock witnesses could relate tired but happy people wending their way home after a full, but successful day. Their first May Dayl!!!! , BABY CONTEST!!!! You Must Have Been a Beautiful Baby. That was seen all over school during the week of the baby contest, sponsored by the paper staff. Anyone from the seventh to the twelveth grade was asked to bring in a baby picture of themselves, and then they were placed in a glass case in the hall for everyone to view. A committee of three picked the winner without knowing the names of the babies. The winner?????? Esther Graber. To make the ,contest complete, Esther was crowned in a HS. Assembly, with bonnet, blanket, baby bottle, and all the trimmings!!!!!!!!
