Many distinguished and mighty people were in the receiving line. As the reception was such a striking success, the class decided to indulge in a party. The party was held at the country home -of Miss Helen Colbert. The enjoyment of the affair was somewhat marred by the lack of moonshine. To show that they were not frivolous they let one year elapse before again enter- ing' the social whirl. This time with much success they gave a banquet in honor of the Seniors and the Faculty. Much gaiety was shown by the hundred present and Carl Ours proved to be a very efficient toast master. ' From the first day in High School the class recognized the importance of athletics in school life, and pushed forward rapidly in basketball. The class of 23 were cham- pions in the interclass tournament tor two years. The captain for the Junior year was Robert Williams and for the Senior year, Leo Meredith. This class was presented with two loving cups by the Creston Chamber of Com-R merce for track work. One was for first place in relay race and the other for second place in the track meet. In football they have been very prominent throughout.. Vincent Bradley as cap- tain and many other members from the Senior Class playing both yearns. The girls basketball team this year which was composed mainly of Seniors were given a regular schedule. The Senior class was well represented having Harriet Watts, Marion Williams, Meriam Reynolds. Helen Keefe and Martha Wietzke on the team. Also tennis was played by a large number and in their Junior year many of the girl-s went out for track. Many in the Senior class were interested in Declamatory work and tried out for all four years, Meriam Reynolds and Berle Comfort being prominent throughout. Their efforts were rewarded when they won out at the Five School Contest at Bedford. A splendid volume of the Crest was published during their Junior year under the very efficient management of the Editor Robert Williams, and bus'ness manazer, Myron Burt. Early in their Senior year the class organized, and elected the following officers: President ..... .... - - ....... --- George Scurr Vice President .... -- Robert Williams Treasurer ..... --- Katherine Peak Secretary --- -- Laurene Kneller NAME Iris Shannon Margaret. The first play of the evening was--Stewart Walker's fantasy, Six Who Pass While the Lentils Boil , produced by the Malteasers. The large audiences that have encored them on various occasions testify as to their talent. Walter Wade, second bassg Myron Burt, second tenorg Robert Williams, first bass, and Charles Zollars, first tenor, make up the quartet. Q Day by day in every way the high school music grows better and better. This is very true and a great deal of the credit goes to Miss Genevieve DeShaw, who has been giving most of her time to work with her four Glee Clubs. There are many beautiful voices in the different Glee Clubs and with this years graduating class we will lose some excellent singers, whose places will not easily be filled. The Mixed Glee Club showed both talent and training by the effective manner in which they produced the Cantatta The Leg- end of Nacoochee? The plaintive Indian melodies that abound in this primitive love story, together with the appropriate stage settings left a lasting impression on the minds of the audience. The capable cast was as follows: H Nacoochee .................... ....... M aulcey Knight Currahee ----- ---:Edward Huntington Sautee ......... ......... H arry Yant Medecine Man .... ...... W alter Wade Priest .......... .... R obert Williams Squaw ..,.... -- -- ..... ..... H arriet Watts Chorus ................................. ---Mixed Glee Club As the Annual goes to press the Boy's Glee Club is working on the Operetta Captain Van Der Hum which will be produced about March 30th. It is the story of a pirate, Walter Wade has the leading role. The way in which the boys are applying them- selves prophesy success of the Operetta. ' al A 1 5 THE 1923 SEASON Not only was the season a success from the point of view of victories and defeats but also because some mighty valuable material was developed that should be real assets in the next two years. Last years graduation took all but Strunce from the backfield and left several holes in the line to be filled at the start of this season which made it a real task to build a winning team for this year. Around Parker, Bradley, Huntington, Meredith and Williams the line problem looked easy and all of the diffi- culty was expected in the backfield. Into the line Yant and Brotherton filled in mak- ing a good line and one that would have given mighty good account of themselves if they had remained together the whole season. Several combinations were tried in the back field, including Burt, Strunce, Cook, Scurr in one combination and Mitchell, Lewis brothers, Kenworthy and Young in another combination. The first three weeks of the season was spent in learning the rudiments and then we settled down to one of the hardest schedules that Creston ever played. Lenox came to Irving field for the first game and found a resting place for the game was a com- paritively easy one for Creston. The game was never in doubt and every man on the squad was given a chance to show his worth. The final score was 54 to 0. The next game with Osceola had to be called at the half because of rain wi h both players and spectators soaked. Three times during the half had Creston carried the ball to the five yard line only to fumble it while Osceola never once showed any offense to worry the locals. The following day Creston took a trip to lVit. Ayr and administered a 12 to 0 de- feat but not without difficulty and grief. For here it was that old man hard luck started his machine and when the battle was over Creston was without the services of Milo Parker, one of the best high school linesman in the state. Atlantic highly tooted came the next Saturday but found the going hard though Parker was absent from the line up, and when it was all over the count stood Creston 7, Atlantic 0. No one knows how close that Creston came to m2c'ing her Waterloo at Chariton, but tho-se that attended the game. for it was not until the last quarter that Creston scored and then on an intercepted pass which Williams accomplished after benz pulled into the backfield. The next Saturday the team journeyed to Red Oak. The Red Oak team proved too much for the locals in the first quarter and ran up a score of 20 to 0 for the locals to overcome. Creston never showed a sign of fight throughout the first half but when the pep injection at the half took a hold, the Creston team swep the Red Oak team off their feet and scored two touchdowns in a hurry and were on their way for another when the whistle saved them, for the team was on Red Oaks 20 yard line and going strong. Rain tried to spoil the annual fight with Corning but the two rivals were not to be denied, and on Monday the 'two locals fought it cutg and again it took another pep talk during the.half to start the tram to overcome the three point lead that Corning had at half time. In the third quarter Creston pushed ovcr two touchdowns and put the game on ice. Next Saturday at Leon Creston's inab lity to make points after the touchdowns cost them a victory for the result was a tie 12 to 12. But the next Saturday found Creston High facing the most formidable opponent of the year and without the services of Parker, Broxhcrton, Cox and Yant. Dur ng the first quarter Creston held the score to a 0 to 0 ,affair but then out went Meredith with a twisted knee, then Huntington, then Williams and finally Strunce. All of the in- juries were accidents but it was what s'tar.ed the Shenandoah team going. And when the game ended Creston had received her worst defeat of the year. The score was 39 to 0. However we take off our hats to the Shenandoah team for they played hard clean ball and Creston only asks a chance to get even. On the following Thursday when everybody else but football men were feasting on turkey Greenfield came down and turned a close game into a win by the score of 6 to 0, which she managed to push across during the third quarter. The second team and the Freshmen deserve a great deal of credit for the way that they stayed with the long hard grind and are responsible for the fact that more men stayed out this year than ever before. About 45 men started the season and at no time was there ever less than 30 to 35 coming out regular. It is this spirit that wins in the long run and the fact that the seconds and Freshmen defeated Lenox once 19 to 7 and lost to Greenfield by the score 13 to '7 gives some idea of what you can expect of them next year. After having the game stored away, the boys eased up a bit, just enough to let the visitors slip across the pan with first the tying and then the winning run. The final score was Creston 7-Massena 8. Joe Strunce made his debut as a C. H. S. ball player and made good in every sense of the word. He was never displaced the remaind- er of the season. l The following week we went to Lenox and had a good practice. Final score, C. H. SQ 18-Lenox 4. The next game was with Fiske when an extra inning was necessary to cinch the victory, three scores at that time made the final count 11 td 8. A Greenfield had the better of the next argument by a margin of 7 to 5 and in the Villisca game proved too much, after the home track meet. Without the services of Meredith and with the pep spent in the meet, Villisca had little trouble in winning 15 to 6. 4 A The Osceola victory of the following week proved a dear one. Bradley broke his ankle sliding home and his services were lost for the remainder of the season. Richland on their own grounds proved easy. Harne was in the box this afternoon and let' the opposition down with very few hits and only two runs while his team- mates collected a total of 11. Greenfield returned our call on May 19 and we returned the beating they gave us earlier in the season. In the return game al Massena we lost again by a narrow margin then closed the season with a no-hit, no man-to-first victory over our neighbor, Cromwell. t . The season was a decided success from all angles. Few experienced players re- ported at the beginning of the season but a full team remains for the coming season. Several new men secured places on the team and showed to a good advantage with the wealth of material in the Freshman class. We predict a repetition of 1920 season this spring. Treasurer The athletic girls of Creston High taking part in any sports-basketball, tennis, or track organized into a club called the Girls Athletic Association and elected the above officers. Much enthusiasm and pep are necessary in the make up of an ath- lete and we certainly do not lack these. Girls athletics are fast becoming an impor- tant factor in our school. Over one hundred girls participated in some sort of athle- tics this year. In addition to tennis and basketball, track was taken up last spring. About twenty girls with Miss Shannon as coach made up the peppy bunch of beginners. We were obliged to appear at. Irving field at six a. m. but nevertheless we enjoyed the sport greatly. We plan to take up field hockey, baseball, and other sports in the spring. C's to be worn on the sweater will be given to any girl who plays a half or two thirds of the basket ball games or who plays in three-fourths of the games. Also some sort of recognition will be given the tennis girls but it has not been decided yet just what it will be. , BASKET BA LL -:-f:-z-z-0:-:-:-z. About fifty girls full of pep and vim appeared at the Irving gymnasium for basket ball practice this fall. The girls show a wonderful improvement upon last year and the gym has been the scene of some very exciting practices. Under the ex- cellent coaching of Miss Bell and Miss Cusack, good team work and a bunch of snappy basket ball players have resulted. The girls were divided into groups for practicing-JuniorSenior practice on Tues- daywandf Thursday night, and Sophomore-Freshman on Wednesday and Friday nights. On Monday night those eligible for the first team practiced. Each class elected its captain as follows: Senior ...... -- -- Harriet Watts Junior ....... -- Margaret Gray Sophomore --- --- Janet Huhn Freshman --- --- Mildred Lily Several very exciting class games were played before the regular basket ball season began which resulted in the Sophomore class taking the championship. A banquet given by Miss Bell and Miss Cusack at Miss Bell's home in honor of the boys' and girls' first teams and their coaches closed up a very successful season of basket ball. Maple St. The Confidence of the Public There is a basic principle on which every business enterprise hinges which may concretely be defined as the confidence of the public in that enterprise. No business can survive or grow without it any more than the body can live without nourish- ment. , From the beginning we have endeavor- ed to gain this public confidence by always giving the public highest values for their money. Uniformly good values through twenty years of service to the public have inspired complete public confidence in us, and be- cause of this confidence we have grown from one small store to 371 Department Stores all over the country where highest values always prevail.
