Yours truly, 22 Chicago, Illinois 1963 Dear Pat and Nancy, Since Mary and I lost contact with most of our schoolmates when we graduated, we were glad to hear what had happened to the rest of our friends. We were especially pleased to hear that NANCY is married and lives in a twenty room mansion on Smith Hill, and that PAT was recently interviewed by a talent scout and has been offered a movie contract in Hollywood. Mary and I have looked up the rest of our classmates and have come up with some interesting facts, which are as follows: SANDRA GUINUP is directing a Slim the Way the Stars Slim school for oversized females. SHARLENE MILLER, now a model, was her first pupil. KATHRYN RITTER, who married the rich plantation farmer, ROBERT HORNING, is now operating the Home for Underprivileged Children, located on route 314. RONALD BOMBSHELL SCHODER, who is now working with the secret service in Washington, has come up with a new bomb device for hopped-up jalopies. Big competition farmers this year are JOHN BIGLIN and ROBERT VOGT, who are competing to see who can raise the largest egg plant. ELAINE WORKMAN, a graduate nurse, is doing most of her practicing on her six children. VIRGINIA TUSCAN, the only girl in Ohio States band, has quite a time with all the male players, who want to help carry the flag. JOHN Mc- DONOUGH has been hired by the Seale Mattress Company as chief demonstrator. He is making it evident that life can be beautiful. PAUL HOKE is his best buyer at present. MARILYN LaBARRE, who thought she didn't like the idea of being an airline hostess, is now taking flying lessons. GENE HORTON, who has completed his training as an electrical engineer, is employed at the Fisher Body Corporation in Boston. DONNA COUNTERMAN has just joined the Women's Army Corps for six years. Some of the more famous members of our class are: HERBERT MARSHALL, who owns a chain of Shell Stations all over the United States, and is one of the ten richest men in the world. JACK ARLEN and CAROLE RYAN, husband and wife team on television, have a program called BREAKFAST FOR TWO. ALTHEA SPEELMAN, famous concert pianist, has invented a new blonde hair dye that is guaranteed to grow out nothing but blond hair no matter what color your hair was in the beginning. DUANE DUFFNER is the star player on the Cleveland Brown's football team this year. LARRY PAYNTER, who enlisted in the Navy when he graduated has been promoted to Admiral. His dream of becoming a rich young man is slowly coming true. WANDA PENNINGTON is in charge of the most exclusive cafeteria in Chicago, and is happily married. JUNE MADDY, popular radio announcer, has just returned from a motorcycle trip to Alaska. I'm sure you will agree as we have, that all our classmates have become successful in the past ten years. my My 2 . f Q' enior 661:56 LEFT TO RIGHT, FIRST ROW: Robert Vogt, Nancy Nixon, Neva Pollock, Karol Miller, Virginia Tuscan, Bonnie Lou Saum, Eileen Armstrong, Joan Miller, Carole Ryan, Launna Johnson, June Maddy. Those chosen to lead them through this very important year were Frank McNeal, Presidentg Joan Ritter, Vice Presidentg Emma Coppinger, Treasurerg Carol Earner, Secretary. These officers were ably assisted by Mrs. Enoch, and Mr. Walrath, who acted as class advisors. On this day, in Room 151, another historical event took place when Bill Lamb was elected presidentg Barbara Ryan, vice-president, .Toy Weis, treasurer, and Marilyn Eckstein, secretary. The advisors, Mr. Hackman and Mrs. Varga, helped plan the social activities for the year. September of 1950 began leaving just five more years until the end of school life. Under the advisorship of Mr. Hutson and Mr. Hackman, the class had an enjoyable year. This year's officers were elected with Barbara Ryan, president, Pat Puhr, vice-president, Marilyn Eckstein, treasurer, and Elaine DeGreve, secretary. In September, 1951, the election was held in the study hall with Mr. Hackman and Miss O'Leary as the new advisors. The officers were voted on and tallied, placing Louis Marino as president, Roy Lee Gallentine as treasurer, Joy Weis as vice-president, and Pat Puhr as secretary. At the beginning of September, 1952, the class of 55 began to realize that there were only three more years to go. Miss Griebling and Mr. Hackman were present to witness the election as Barbara Ryan became president, Jack Yerkey, vice-president, Gerald Nolder, treasurer: and Joy Weis, secretary. The main events of this year were the Annual Sophomore Hop and several sock hops. In their three years ahead, the Sophomores hope to make their good record an even better one. Although they lost all of their games, they played in the finest tradition of Crestline High School, never loafing nor behaving unsportsmanlike, All teams play with their minds and their bodies but the Bulldogs played with their minds, their bodies and their hearts. Of the four girls, two are Seniors and two are Freshmen. June Maddy and Josie Zara, the two graduation Seniors, have for the past three years faithfully led all the cheers at the football and varsity basketball games. Marilyn Armstrong and Frances Griefinstein, in their first year of yell leading, pepped the reserve team on to seven victories. The varsity cheerleaders' dresses were of white corduroy trimmed at the collar and cuffs with royal blue. The outfits of the reserve cheerleaders were royal blue, satin skirts and weskits combined with long sleeved white blouses. Each spring the student body e- lects two new cheerleaders for the coming season. A special assembly is held and the students vote for two of the girls that are trying out. These two girls will be the reserve cheer- leaders. The two present reserve cheerleaders will then cheer for the varsity of next year. 75 Carole Elaine ajoreffed Nancy Patty 76 .YKXN The court omecoming nervous moments i A .W . fl ' T o v Look pretty The Queen and Her Court l 1 Big Moment ! '- ' MM ' ' Uur School The Montpelier High School was erected in 1915. lt was a gala day when the Montpelier students were permitted to call the High School their own. With the changing years, it the year 1940, a new and modern gymnasium was constructed. In 1948, two thousand dollars in tools was added to the shop. lt was all repainted and an office was built. was necessary to make many new improvements. ln The students were also glad to welcome two other buildings. They are the music hall and the agriculture room. ln 1949 the Home Economics Department was remodeled. These and many other improvements add greatly to the attractiveness and usefulness of the school. lt is only a normal American High School to most people but it signifies more to its students. It is a-symbol of the liberty of free education to all and stands like a torch, leading us from the pitfall of ignorance to the pinnacle of success. What is the one thing that students graduating from high school miss most? ls it history, math, science, English, or the times they got into difficulties and had to go to the office? No, l'm sure we will all agree these aren't the things that we'll long remember, lt is the classmates we grew to know through our contacts in the classrooms, between classes, on the stairs and through the halls. lt is their friendliness, their individual personalities that will never have to be written down in a memory book because they are so vividly painted in our minds. T11 PAGE FOUR 3 5- .r 4 if Qi mmm-sm Dedication As we pause for a moment to recall our past l2 years, we think over all the incidents in which we made big successes or failures, But regardless of how our trials turned out, we are very thankful to Dad, and Mom, who have been behind us, no matter what happened, We realize it now more than ever as we have come to the point in our lives where we are going to have to leave our parents and homes and try to put to practice all the wisdom we have gathered since our first grade of school. Knowing this, we become very humble and grateful to you, our Dads and Mothers, who have undoubtedly been the ones who have kept us going. Therefore, we wish to dedicate The Mirror of l95O to you, our parents. CU TE T5 FACULTY CLASSES SPORTS ACTIVITIES ADVERTISING Foreword A clearer understanding of the functions of the annual can be obtained by a brief glance at its history and development. In the early years it was a memory album for seniors only. In the beginning seniors exchanged pictures. Some pasted them into albums together with newspaper clippings to serve as a reminder of school days. Eventually printed yearbooks came into being. In the late I880's, the use of halftones was developed and many schools adopted this new method of photo reproduction. This opened tremendous possibilities but it was too much to expect yearbooks to change overnight. Most annuals continued to be senior memory books, with addition of views and a few snapshots. After all, they were produced to a large extent by students who had little or no experience in the publishing business, and who were carrying a full assignment of school work in addition to their editorial duties. Today the chief function of the yearbook is the same as it was before printed annuals made their appearance. It should still be a memory book, a family album of the school, because students still want pictures of themselves and their friends. PAGE FIVE FACULTY The duties of a teacher are . . , As heavy as can be . . . Regardless of the type of school . . . Or whether he or she . , . Because the teacher must possess . . . A knowledge that will shine . . . And in addition has to keep . . . The students right in line . . . There are a thousand questions to . . . Be answered every day . . . And papers must be graded when . . , The books are put away , . , The pleasures of an evening out . . , Are seldom to be shared . . . Because the next day's lesson must . . . Be carefully prepared . . . And yet there is a glory in . . . This timeless atmosphere . . . The teacher helps tomorrow's world . . . Prepare for its career. PAGE TIVENTY-FOUR Juniors One way to gauge the future is to take a look at the past. lt is natural for us as Juniors - to look back to see how much we have accomplished, ta look ahead to see in what direction we are moving. We take pride in our past achievements. As we witness the growth and development of our personalities, as well as our minds and bodies, we realize how we have been richly favored by the spirit and energy of the teachers. Now we face the challenge of the atomic age. lt furnishes resources and opportunities which we must learn to utilize so that we, as the future citizens, can work together to build a better world. in W Bob Beard w 'X Amy Altaffer Dick Brandeberry 'C Keith Baker Dorothy Brandeberry Janice Bowen Janet Bailey Harmon Bechtol X f Kenny Cox Geraldine Cumberland Theda Elson Phillip Cook Sandra Cronk Barbara Brown Gary Clark Virginia Dick ix K iinauuaimuunnlunna-vu,-...... Gone the carefree, idle vaca- tion! Work and struggle, strive and strain to keep ourselves on this doggone train. But we're making the trip year by year, and we're picking up passengers here and there. Ninety-nine strong are we today, as our old locomotive pulls us away. We're now passing through a brand new station,-by golly, this one's marked Freshman . When we take time to listen, the big wheels say, Ed-u-ca-tion, ed-u-ca-tion, work-and-g e t-your-ed-u-ca- tion, work-and-get-your-ed u-ca-tion. So clear the track! Make way! He alwoys seemed to know that even though we lost, sometimes, we were trying our hardest for him, With a little luck the l949 seoson could have been a very successful one. All of the seniors will remember him and the underclassmen will be looking forwofd to onother season with Duke , Al. - Al was more or less tcugged as the line coach. Any time you looked, the line would be either duck-walking or doing blocking. Everyone in the line gat to know Al as a person who does everything for someone else and never thinks of himself. For this reason Al become a real friend of everyone on the teom. EUGENE LOCKHART End Before Gene was plagued by injuries in the latter part of the season he was a standout on both offense and defense. Many end runs were successful only because of his timely blocks. JOHN GEREN Guard To John the game was never lost until the final gun. From the start to the end John was in there giving his best, His fighting spirit ranks with the greatest. BILL SIDERS Halfback Being little didn't stop Bill from making all league. His shiftyness and speed enabled him to be one of the top ground gainers in the league. VAL DEAN MICHAEL Halfback After a lay-off in his Junior year Val came back to help out this season. lt was hard for Val to get in shape but when he did he was one of the hardest halfbacks in the league to stop. DON NICOLON Tackle Playing either tackle or line-backer Don was a standout on defensive play, He was known for his smash- ing tackles and his ability to keep the team's spirit up. HOMER SCOTT End All league end, Homer was a triple threat. Playing most of the game, Homer would do the team's punting, throw posses, besides snaging more than his share of them. LORREN PHILIPS Tackle Although this was Lorren's first year at football he played regularly at tackle. Lorren never let down but was always in there pitching when the going got rough. Football-1950 During Fair week this year the team trained hard, and even stayed away from the Fair in order to go Over and play a spirited game against Defiance, and come out on the better side of a hard fought battle that ended in a 6 to 6 tie. The next week the boys were still gloating over the tie and forgot that they had to play Napoleon that week. The cost of this forgetting was a 39 to 0 setback. The only game this year in which we failed to score. Smarting from the onesided defeat of the week before, the practices this week were just the opposite of fooling around. Due to this hard work and a good turnout of fans, Pelier turned the tables and whipped Liberty Center 33 to l8. On October the 7, a good Sylvania team came to town and showed us how to play football. This lesson was a 24 to 6 defeat. Rossford wasn't supposed to have too much this year, but picked the night we played them to prove that they were somewhat underrated. They seemed to be under-rated about 24 to 7. The big week had finally come. It was the week of the Bryan game. No matter how much spirit there seems to be for the other games there is always more for this game. That goes for the students, faculty, town, plus a never 'die team. Although Pelier outplayed the Bears throughout the game, we came out on the short end of the score, 20 to l8. It was stated that the Locals won everything but what they wanted most, the ballgame. We now seemed to be on a somewhat unlucky streak. After losing a real heartbreaker the week before, Wau- seon came over and kept things going at the rate of 20 to l9. That's just about as close as you can come without being there. The streak went right on at Hillsdale. Although the statistics favored us greatly we were edged by the score of 7 to 6. The last game of the season we were determined to win and proceeded to do just that at the expense of the Libby Lightweights from Toledo. The score was 28 to 0. CHEERLEADERS There can't be enough said on the part of the cheerleaders this year. Anyone knows that it's a cinch to cheer when your team is winning consistently, but these girls kept right on cheering their hearts out even though we didn't win every game. They deserve as much praise as anyone ond never seem to get it. LE FT TO RIGHT - Norma Yar er J g , oyce Echler, Lynne Lockhart, Connie Rundell. l'll'I' r HOMER SCOTT: One of the five players on the all- league team, Homer gave a good accoJnt of himself in all games even though his opponents were mostly taller, He grabbed many rebounds from the big fe.lows and averaged IO points a game. TOM CHILDERS: Tom seemed to be able to make them from al angles and places in practice but when he got in games he froze up. However he untroze in the Bryan game and kept us ahead with his long ones. GENE HEIST: Cactus eye , as Gene was known to most people, was iust as effective as his name suggests. Moving from under to the outside, either place he was a constant threat with his timely shots. TED HUSTON: Ted was possibly the best shot on the team os he could sink them from either the corner or from underneath. His height was also a determining factor for his share of rebounds. 1 DANNY DAYHOFF: Dan was never out fought in a game and always got the ba.l through somehow. Equally effective with either hand, he was hard to stop when he gat the range. BILL SIDERS: Although Bill was forced to the side- lines before the season was over be- cause of iniuries, he was hard to stop when handling the ball and also stole it from the opposition countless times, RESERVE TEAM Basketball-1950 ln the first game of the season the Hillsdale Hornets came to town for a ball game and went home on the long end of a 29-24 score. The following week a very good Ashley, lndiana team visited Montpelier and they, too, went home the winners 6l-43 although we played a fairly.good game. By this time the squad should be getting better be- cause of some experience under its belt in the form of two defeats. However over-confidence cost us the Edon game 5l-48. Defiance was rated as the team to beat and they sure started out to show us by jumping to a 2l-2 first quarter lead. Although the locals rallied it wasn't enough as Defiance wan 5l-40. ' That first defeat in the league kind of took the wind out of our sails, but the next week in practice we settled down and lost a thrilling 38-36 game to Napo- leon that Friday. Archbold was headed for the state, they said, and beat us 50-30 on the way. Although really keyed up and wanting to win this one badly, we blew a 7 point lead and went down in defeat 39-37 to Liberty Center, then in first place in the league. The next week we took heart in the good fight that was put up at Liberty and were ready for them when Wouseon came here and sent them home licking their wounds in the form of a 34 to 28 defeat, for our first victory of the season. Being a little cocky about beating Wouseon we weren't ready for it when we got trampled by Bryan 45-30. A game that we were to remember a little later. Liberty came to town the following week and al- though the home team scored more field goals than the Tigers they canned the charity throws and won 33-29. The next week on our first floor with glass back- boards, at Angola and we didn't do so hot. Since some excuse is expected we will blame them for our 52-39 defeat. Wouseon hit good and the locals didn't even hit when they got revenge for their setback here by drubing us 49-39. Bryan came to town the next week still gloating about their I5 point victory over there. Since it was the proper thing to do, we chose this game as our second win and sent them home very much un-gloated, 48-40. Defiance again jumped off to a 20 point first quarter and went on from there to rub it in 63-48. Napoleon did the same thing only a little different. They only won by 6l-48. As this game was our last of the regular season we finished up with a 2 and I3 record. In the tournament we got our first break and drew a bye to play the winner of the Liberty Center- Fostoria game. Fostoria trounced Liberty and we met them the next night. Although playing a good game and even leading 8-9 at the end of the lst quarter, Fostoria had a good second quarter and went on to win 54-4l. They also took Napoleon in their stride in winning the tournament. When the reserve team was hot it was really hot and when it was cold it was really cold. While beating some of the best reserve teams in the league and losing to some of the worst our boys ended well up in the standings. lt could never be said that these boys ever gave up as can be proved by the win over Liberty Center after trailing at one time by twenty points. This kind of spirit is a credit to the school and is helping in seasoning the stars of tomorrow. Nov. Montpelier Nov. Montpelier Dec. Montpelier Dec. Montpelier Dec. Montpelier Dec. Montpelier Dec.
