The theme of such a book is the motif that runs through it to unite the various divisions. In the sketches on the division pages may be glimpsed rural scenes characteristic of this locality, the winding country roads, inviting homes, richly-stocked barnyards, ripening cornfields, a fine rural life. This is forever a part of all our lives and to it we owe our community and school. Any record of our school life would be incomplete without it. We therefore choose it as the theme around which to build this Spartan. Once more we have come to the close of a happy, eventful and successful year. Before going on to another year, let us pause to review the past and recapture some of its color. Let us stop to recall some of the activities and sounds coming from the halls of our Alma Mater. Wandering through the buildings in the morning, we hear the chorus gaily singing, or perhaps there are strains of martial music coming from the Auditorium where the band is rehearsing. Then we see the students in classes . . . The mathematically-minded ones puzzling over the intricacies of an algebra problem . . . the literature classes struggling to learn lines from Shakespeare's plays . . . the shorthand students with one eye on their shorthand notes and one on the snake cage in the biology room . . . Mr. Standley's boys working industriously in the shop. We see the Home Economics classes working on Red Cross materials . . . the F.F.A. boys discussing the relative merits of different types of seeds . . . the typing classes racing through a ten-minute speed test. We hear the happy voices of the students as they leave their last classes for the day. We hear them singing in the Little Theater or having an exciting basketball game in the gym. Then, later, we wander through the halls which wait in silent expectation of another day or perhaps of a basketball game or wrestling meet in the evening. And as wc remember this happy, successful year, we think of those students who have been here before us, of the boys in the Armed Services. We wish for them all a speedy return to their homes and those they love. We look to the future and carry with us the ideals of Cresco High. We resolve to meet that future unflinchingly, and give the best that is in us to make the most of our lives and the opportunities that shall follow. ADMINISTRATION CLASSES ORGANIZATIONS ATHLETICS STUDENT LIFE Contents Back Row: Vivian Fitzgerald, Typist, Imogene Hayes, Circulation Manager, Lovene Eaton, Typistg Marcella I-lenkes, Literary Editor, Marjorie James, Features: Locl Reinhart, Art Editor. Front Row: Bernice Davis, Organizations, Frances Morris, Snapshots, Shirley Bigalk, Business Manager, Clarissa Hein, Editor-in-chief, Arlene Sobolik, Associate Editor, Florence Aebly, Photographs, Keith Thayer, Advertising Manager, David Todd, Sports Editor. These pages were put together by the persistent efforts of the Spartan Staff. We feel that we will be amply rewarded for the long hours spent around the great table in E-4, and count them as one more pleasant memory if these are faithful records of the life of Cresco High, and if, in years to come, someone, in turning the pages, finds happiness in remembering old friendships and has many a laugh at the old pictures. A Spartan is published by hard work, a great deal of discussion and chatter, and some worry. It was not difficult to find questions about which to worry. Could there be Kodak pictures with so great a film shortage? Even now we cannot be sure until we hastily turn to the last pages and see those snapshots looking much as they have looked in the Spartans of all the other years. We, the staff, are deeply appreciative to the artist, Mr. Fred Fischer, who made the drawings that illustrate the rural life theme on the division pages. NX7e are grateful for the cooperation of the teachers and the students. Although we have done our best, we well know that the book is incomplete until each person has the pages of his book filled with the silly, treasured nonsense penned by his friends, the scribbled autographs, and even an occasional ink-spot. We now give this book to you to treasure as one of the happy reminders of your high school life. The STAFF Dedication We, the seniors of tlre Class of 1945, dedicate this Spartan to Mr. Harry Sclvroder in appreciation of his time and and untiring effort spent for fifteen years in our school. In his Work in tl7e Agricultural Department, be has given training of great value, enabling his students to live more useful lives in the community. He has been a friend to us at all times and has done muelv to make our school-days more enjoyable and pleasant. HARRY SCI-IRODER OUR TOWN I , r nv 1 'Q.1'!'AA'r,Y ff' If 4' --5. w- -. Of our class, Melvin Mlady left in his third year, and James Hochberger and Floyd Gunderson in the first semester of this year. An Honor Roll on which are three or four hundred names, an Honor Roll touched with the light of gold stars is eloquent witness of the shining contribution Cresco High School is making to the cause of human freedom.
