S. personality n the air . . . , In the quiet of WHO's studio on Decem- bcr lfi, at Des Moines. was Helen LybU. rt anxiously waiting to broadcast hcr tc. sicn of The Winning Fight Against Tu- berculosis, in competition with 2,400 other Iowa speech students tr m whom five winners from class A schools WCW to be selected to broadcast in order that a state winner might bc chosen. Judgcd upon ccintent of speech, expression and general radiv performance. Helen was awarded the state Victory trophy, Rehearsals tor some thirty eager students began with Miss Mable Sehuller, dramatic coach, during the month of December. After an elimination contest held in February, the ten selected vied for honors to repre- sent Cresco High in the state series. Leonard Slifka, Emily De-Noyelles, and Mary Kennelly received a C by winning first place in the eratorical, dramatic, and humorous divisions, respectively, with the selections. They That Take the Sword, t'The Burgo Master. and Ladies Aid at the Local Theatre, Second place win- ners were Arlene Johnson, Phyllis Darby and Marion Bennedict. Winning two firsts in oratorical and humorrus and one second in dramaties at the county contest held at Elma during February, the team was awarded the silver cup. They competed in the sub-district contest at Dc- corah, placing three seconds.
