A. members in Iowa alone. The Cresco chapter took the name Robbins, since Superintendent Robbins was the organizer of the part-time school, and has always been a booster of ag work. The chapter, with twenty members, was installed by the Hall chapter of Charles City. A dairy cattle-judging team, Edward Lybbert, William Burns, and Gareth Vagts, placed second in the state contest at Waterloo. At the state contest at Ames, the farm management team placed in the first group, the livestock-judging team, in the fourth. Football Mr. Thompson found it necessary to build a team around two regulars from the undefeated team of 1932, Zbornik and Harness. The opening game with Monona found the boys playing fair football and they eked out a 13 to 0 victory. The next week was the low point of the season. With Mike Zbornik on the sideline nursing a wrenched ankle, the boys were no match for Oel- wein, and went down to a 53 to 0 defeat, the worst in Cresco's recent history. The real spirit of the team showed itself the following week when the strong New Hamp- ton outfit was outplayed in a 6 to 6 deadlock. This game, which was the first a local team ever played at night marked the turning point of the season. After a scoreless tie with Sumner the following week, the Spartan offense began to function smoothly, West Union, Waukon, and Osage were defeated in succession by scores of 31 to 3, 14 to 0, and 33 to 0. The final game with Decorah, who had an impressive record, and on paper they were much stronger. when the game was over, Decorah had won 7 to 0. Basketball Graduation last year took a huge toll in basketball regulars and reduced the prospects for the 1933-34 team. Kvam, a regular, and Harnoss, a second-string man, were the only letter players. The new team made a slow start, but gradually improved, In the Northeastern Iowa Conference, by rating 500 per cent, Cresco finished fourth among the ten schools. Two thrillers were won from Decorah and two games from Waukon. Defeats were registered at the hands of Osage, New Hampton, and Charles City. In non-conference competition, games were lost to Elma and Mason City-two teams that went to the state tournament. Cresco defeated Lime Springs in an early- season game, but went down before Riceville in an upset. The lettermen ending their competition are: Loughrey, Captain Hanneman. Cresco placed third in the Fort Dodge State meet with Dale Hanson, Earl Thom- as, and Donald Maland as champions. Earl Hilke and Harold Nichols won third places. Several members of the squad competed in the Waterloo Northeast Iowa Y. M. C. A. tournament, Dale Hanson and William Burns winning first Dlaces in the 85 and 115 pound classes. Donald Maland and Earl Thomas, by winning first and second places in the Midwest A. A. U. tournament at Cherokee thereby qualified for the National A. A. U. 'tournament at Ames. Maland was unable to compete because of illness but Thomas won the national title in the 118 pound class. Donald Maland has been state champion three times, won thirty-eight consecu- tive bouts, and has never been defeated. He was elected honorary captain of this year's team. Thomas has been a consistent winner throughout his four years in high school and won the highest national honor possible for an amateur to attain by win- ning the championship in the National A. A.
