As we approach the end of the Odyssey of Crenshaw High School in the school year 1988-89, a story of hard work, dedication to excellence in education, service to our neighbors and community, and sincere commitment to those ideals of traditions that we honor and revere, we are happy to report that this has been a good year in spite of some unfulfilled dreams and plans that are yet to be completed. Our theme, Knowledge Today; Power Tomorrow, is many faceted. One thing we must understand regarding knowledge is that knowledge of who we are makes it possible for us to become who we hope to be. This can be accomplished through the perception, enlightenment and the extensive comprehensive experience that knowledge provides. The compliment to the knowledge we gain today serves as a passport to the amount of power we will exert tomorrow, power with permission, power to right wrong; to strive to preserve the dignity of human beings, power to make possible the fulfillment of the American dream ... for all who seek it. Yes, Knowledge Today; Power Tomorrow. May all your tomorrows be filled with power to protect, preserve, and prosper. Yours truly. Tt J v t -tCZ Jewell Boutte Principal TRENDS! FADS! FASHIONS! Our students take great pride in the museum, and use every opportunity to read and learn about the Civil Rights Movement and Dr. King ' s contribution to the Movement. Also, many other schools and community members have benefited from the rich heritage offered by the museum. The classes cover topics from Physiology to Physics, each bringing students closer to an understanding of how our world works. For many graduates, scientific studies will con- tinue through higher education, while others will use the basic knowledge gained at Cren- shaw to keep themselves healthy as they meet the challenges of our increasingly tech- nical lives. Many graduates are able to enter directly into jobs following the training they receive at Crenshaw. This training ranges from basic auto repair to computer programming, and whether put to work on the job, or in solving daily problems in home life, these skills are essential for everyone in today ' s technological society. The Fine and Performing Arts Department has two goals: to teach students the techniques they need to pursue their own artistic talents and to develop an appreciation for the work of others. Each of the different aspects of the artistic world included in this department also has a practical function at Crenshaw High School. The art program produces the many posters used throughout the year, the drama and dance classes perform at the assemblies, and the choir and band perform, not only on campus, but often travel for engagements throughout the city. The Crenshaw media program also produces weekly news broadcasts. It gives us a sense of pride. It makes life easier. Why not let our love for life remind us how we used to be? Everybody ' s searching for a hero. People need someone to look up to. Until we were Challengers, we could not fulfill our needs. What a lonely place to be until I learned to depend on me. We decided long ago, never to walk in anyone ' s shadow; how can we fail? We must succeed, because when you ' re a Challenger, you ' re born to lead. No matter what they take from us, you ' ll always hear us say we must, we must. Because the greatest test you give you give it to yourself and facing the challenges in life is trusting yourself above all else. And if by chance our path grows dim, we ' ve not set our goals too high. Each day our lives have just begun. REACH BACK AND GET YOUR CHALLENGERS ' PRIDE. A TRIBUTE TO JANAI Memories cross my mind, seems lil e YESTERDAY that we were walking across the stage in 9th grade. Just YESTERDAY we went to our last football game together. Just YESTERDAY we saw her smile that made a day a perfect one. Just YESTERDAY we had an argument and were ready to go at each other ' s throats. Just YESTERDAY we all made up. Just YESTERDAY Janai, Michon, Paula and Danita were walking home from a game. Just YESTERDAY Janai was shot behind her ear. Just YESTERDAY we were all laughing and playing around with her. TODAY she ' s gone! Not gone and forgotten, but gone as far as the eye can see, but as far as our hearts could feel, Janai is not now and never will be memories of YESTERDAY but an angel of TODAY.
