Led by guard Franklin Rhodes' 20 points and forward Darryl Strawberry's I4. the Cougars routed Locke 8I-57. Jefferson High was the next victim of the Raw Shaw attack. The Cougars reeled off ten straight points at the start and never looked back. With Harold Toomer C28 pts5 8 Gary Maloncon C265 leading the way Crenshaw demolished the Democrats IIO-90. The next step was the semi-finals at the Sports Arena. The Banning High Pilots were high on upsetting the ffl-ranked Cougars. But that was not to be as Crenshaw jumped off to a I2-O lead 8 put out the Pilots lights. Four players were in double figures: Maloncon C265 Rhodes C245 Guard Patrick Sandle CI25 S forward Raybon Rankins CIO5. The sharpshooting Cougars CSIZ5 shot down the Pilots 92-68. Crenshaw then returned to Pauley Pavilion to confront the Kennedy H.S. Golden Cougars. The 7,000plus fans were kept in suspense as Kennedy jumped out to a 20-8 first-quarter lead E1 led 38-3l at halftime. But as they say. you can't keep a good team down. The Cougars came roaring back blitzing Kennedy 66-62. lt was Crenshaw s third consecutive city championship and sixth in the last IO years - both records. Outstanding in the game were Maloncon Es Rhodes Cl6 pts5 Toomer CI45 Strawberry CIO5 8 guard Leonard Sapp. Maloncon S Rhodes were named to the All-Tournament first team- Toomer made the second team. Combining a precision fast break S patient offense with a strong man-to-man -a E1 deadly zone press defense. the Cougars marched through the league. They were led by guards Co-Captains Earl Patterson E: Norman Brown, center Edward Perry, Forwards Rod Thomas 8 Curtis Harding. Bruce Rucker. Russell Moore, Aaron Terry, Alan Bloodsaw, Victor Trammell and Kevin Johnson also contributed greatly to the team's outstanding success. Patterson was tops in scoring and assists, while Edward Perry led in rebounds. Western League player of the year Patterson was MVP, Thomas 8 Harding was Most Improved and Norman Brown Most Inspirational. They and Perry made All-League second team.
