The varsity basketball team started the l979-80 season seeking an unprecedented third consecutive City championship. lts first game of the season was a matchup against another perennial powerhouse, Verbum Dei. Led by Kenny Fields, Verbum Dei outscored Crenshaw I8-7 in the first half, finally winning by two to hand Crenshaw its only loss of the season. From then on. the Cougars had a relatively easy time making the playoffs. They dominated the pre-season Banning Tournament. beating Dorsey, Washington and Jefferson. Junior center Gary Maloncon was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player. Crenshaw beat its Western League opponents by as much as 30 points. They did it by dazzling them with the awesome fast break that has become a Crenshaw trademark. Hamilton Cthird-ranked in the cityj was Crenshaw's toughest league competition, matching the Cougars' tough defense S unrelenting offense with its own version of the raw Shaw attack. Hami pulled within one point with IO seconds left in the game. but at the final buzzer Crenshaw led, 7lf7O. The season's last game. against Hamilton, was billed by local newspapers as ,sv Kill! However. this team would predict its present S future and bear upon itself the burden of being the number one team in the city - a task that is not only difficult to acquire but even more difficult to maintain.
