The varsity basketball team started the l979-80 season seeking an unprecedented third consecutive City championship. lts first game of the season was a matchup against another perennial powerhouse, Verbum Dei. Led by Kenny Fields, Verbum Dei outscored Crenshaw I8-7 in the first half, finally winning by two to hand Crenshaw its only loss of the season. From then on. the Cougars had a relatively easy time making the playoffs. They dominated the pre-season Banning Tournament. beating Dorsey, Washington and Jefferson. Junior center Gary Maloncon was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player. Crenshaw beat its Western League opponents by as much as 30 points. They did it by dazzling them with the awesome fast break that has become a Crenshaw trademark. Hamilton Cthird-ranked in the cityj was Crenshaw's toughest league competition, matching the Cougars' tough defense S unrelenting offense with its own version of the raw Shaw attack. Hami pulled within one point with IO seconds left in the game. but at the final buzzer Crenshaw led, 7lf7O. The season's last game. against Hamilton, was billed by local newspapers as ,sv Kill! Two top men were William Hart and John Evins, with strong performances also coming from Eric Futch, Terence Reed and Marc LaBrew. Rounding out the team were Terence Goods, Leon Walker, Rob Cordoba, Mark Gant and Leslie McKnight. lf the gentlemen continue working and return next year to join their returning varsity and JV teammates, Crenshaw may surprise many opponents in the dual meet season. -Coach Benmosche TOP: William Hart, Arthur Williams.
