66 97 ifiappoinfmenf edcri ed gricliron eadon lf there were one word to describe the l979 football season, that word would be disappointment After an excellent start Cwinning 4 of 6 games, including victories over Dorsey S Palisadesj, it appeared we were on our way to the playoffs S a league championship. Then disaster struck, as we went winless in our last 3 games. While the Cougar defense played championship-caliber football all season, the usually steady but young Cougar offense suddenly S uncharacteristically forgot how to score. Committing a rash of critical errors every time it neared the opponents goal-line, the Cougars went scoreless in their last 3 league encounters, losing these games by a combined score of only I6-O. Nevertheless, we were blessed with some outstanding football players in l979, including IO all-league selections. Seniors in this group were Darryl Ursery, Ricky Benjamin, David Bowdre, Jonathan Brown S Jeff Wooton. Under- graduates making all-league were Lloyd Hawthorne, William Carter, Marcus Smith, Dexter Levy 8 Clifford Madison. Other outstanding players on the '79 Cougar varsity included Robert Thomas, Ed Barnes, Tyrone Gary, Mitchell Harris, Mario Ellis, Reggie Thornton 8 Johnny Luckett.
