JV BASEBALL The junior varsity baseball team got off to a fine start, winning six of its first seven games. Pitcher Melvin Despenza was the team ' s iron man, as well as one of its strongest hitters. Other sluggers included Third-Baseman John Kelly and First-Base- man Richard Clayton. THIRD ROW: Coach Cecil McLirm, Manager John Owens, Cornelius Lockhart, Benji Cooper, Harrison Ferguson, Nigel Price, Claude McLin, Manager James Griffin. Nineteen sixty-nine was a year of build- ing for Coach Cecil McLinn ' s varsity base- ball team. The Cougars began the season with a roar, shutting out Fremont, then had their ups and downs. Leading the team were Henry Woods, Neal May, Leslie Thompson, Fred Gray, Frank Christian and Harrison Ferguson. Impressive on the mound were Pitchers Cornell Ridley and Ray Flowers. Prospects for next season are bright, thanks to some promising JV and returning varsity players (see below). Six To Watch 1970 may be the year of Malvin Washington, John Kelly, Melvin Despenza, Daniel Kingsby, Rodney Perkins Ervin Duffy. 86
