A new student photo-identification process was used this year at registration. Color pictures replaced the black and white photos and students received their ID ' s in a few min- utes, instead of a few weeks. The same ID will be used throughout a student ' s stay at Creighton. Formerly a new ID was issued each September. Colleges welcome 900 new students Nearly 900 freshmen and transfer students tried the campus on for size during Freshman Welcome Week. University President the Rev. H. W. Linn, Dr. Rich- ard E. Shugrue, associate professor of political sci- ence, and Urban League Director Jack Clayter ad- dressed the new students. Other activities ranged from formal orientation sessions to mixers. Freshman Welcome Week ended with the all-uni- versity concert featuring Spanky and Our Gang. Michelle Hansell appears somewhat disgusted after being closed out of a class. The race from department to department is often in vain by the time one reaches the checkers. Pulling cards is the final step in Stage I of the annual registra- tion maze. Following this, the students must fill out reams of forms, cards, and blanks. 21

Resident Advisors Marie Ohiinger and Mary Beth Knapp greet the freshman girls who took over the previously male-inhabited Deglman Hall. Female residents also lived in Kiewit and Gallagher Halls. Las Vegas and its magic lose-a-million atmosphere came to Creighton for Wel- come Week activities, at Casino Night. Heavy trunks make men out of boys w ho come to college. Moving in sometimes proves to be more of an experience than starting new courses. Paula Washburn and Georgia Schwab brighten the life of a lonely freshman at Casino Night. Kappa Gamma Sigma fraternity and Kappa Beta Chi sorority sponsored the event with the Student Board of Governors. 20

Father Linn challenges the student body, the faculty, and the administration to get on with the hard, lengthy, humbl- ing, and exciting task of challenging Creighton ' s under- graduate education. The president stressed the need for continuous evaluation of the undergraduate program of education and development to insure its quality. Father Thomas K. McKenney S.J., Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, reads the award which was given to Father Joseph Costelloe, S.J. (far left) in recognition of university service. Dr. Raymond W. Shaddy, Dean of the Dental School, congratu- lates Dr. John J. Butkus, assistant dean, for his twenty years of service to Creighton University. 22
