We Welcome You To The fall of nineteen eighty one brought on many changes to Creighton Community Schools. The first day of classes, new superintendent James Micek, who came to us from Fairfield-Sandy Creek, opened the year with a school theme: PRIDE. And pride we showed, through the bad times as well as the good. Graduating 81 seniors in the spring of 1981 took its toll. Our enrollment dropped over fifteen percent, forcing us back into Class C in ath- letics. As a result, the Bulldogs had their share of troubles. But through it all, we kept the winning spirit and good sportsmanship for which Creighton is known. In the classroom and out. Bulldog pride showed through. During the year, students represented the school well in Speech, Drama, Music, FFA, FHA, Math, Science, and Industrial Arts in various contests throughout the area. Art and Industrial Arts students also put their talents on display at school at times when the departments were opened to the public for inspection. A new toy was also discovered. The school pur- chased a microcomputer for the math department, and many of the students found that it was good for more than playing games. Classes were held to teach programming and we learned much about how computers work. We began the year on a note of change and hope. We knew it had the potential to be a great time of learning and sharing. We hope you enjoy this view of our year 1981-82 - The Year of Bulldog Pride. Mr. James Micek, superinten- dent, came to us from Fairfield, NE, after several years as administrator at the Sandy Creek school system. Our new principal, Richard Caldwell, is a newcomer to Nebraska, after spending thirteen years as a teacher and coach in Iowa. The Micek and Caldwell families were welcomed into the commu- nity and school system, and we wish all of them success as they take over the helm of the school. The faculty for 1981-82 was largely the same as last years, with only five new teachers entering the sys- tem. They were Kathy Dartman, Richard Dillon, Julie Hartman, Joan Koester, and Dennis Romshek. How- ever, only a couple weeks into school, we received bad news. Mr. Harder had been hospitalized with leukemia. While he was undergoing treatments, Lona Schreier became our business teacher. Fortu- nately, Mr. Harder responded well and returned to work. The entire school shared his thanks. Victories over arch-rival Pierce and West Holt in the first two games of the season led Bulldog fans to believe it was finally our year. Other people were believers, too, as Creighton topped the World-Herald and Lincoln Star Polls for class C-1 teams. But it was not to be, as a lack depth com- bined with key injuries stopped the Bulldogs in midseason. We were unable to recover from the loss of Seniors Larry Neilsen, Doug McManigal and Scott Wagner, and ended the season at 3-6. We were not without our highlights, however, as four players were named to the 1981 All-NENAC squad: Kelly Eisenbeiss, Kevin Kehne, Doug McManigal, and Kevin Young; and four others named honorable mention. Kelly Eisenbeiss was also named by the Omaha World Hearald and Lincoln Star as Class C-1 All State Defensive Tack- le. Twenty nine letters were earned, and several honors were voted upon: Kelly Eisenbeiss was named Head Captain, with Kevin Kehne and Curt Zimmerer named Co-captains. Kevin Young was named offensive player of the year, and defensive honors went to Kelly Eisenbeiss. 28 Coach Polzin pulls on his hair as in response to the incompleted pass in the background. The Creighton grapplers, under the tutelage of coach Randy Kliment, have good reason to be proud. After losing a close dual to Pope John Central, the Bulldogs more than doubled the score on all of their opponents, except for perennial power Plainview. Led by 5 state qualifiers, the wrestlers placed in every tournament they entered. The highlight of the season was winning the Plainview Invitational over stiff competition. Paul Richling, who repeated as a state wrestler, placed 5th at 112 in the final meet. He was joined by seniors Kelly Eisenbeiss and Larry Neilsen, and juniors Mike Doerr and Kevin Young, who placed 6th at 155. 30 Five Qualify For State WINSIDE STANTON WISNER PILOER KILIM Top, L-R: Kelly Eisenbeiss shows the form which qualified him for the state tournament. Behind the strength of their Super Soph- omores , the Lady Bulldog thinclads really put on a show this spring. Bouncing back from last year's season, when we had no state qualifiers, Creighton's tracksters consistently recorded times among the state's best. At the district meet at West Hole, Five girls qualified in four events. Patty Van Brocklin was the mainstay on the cinders. Qualifying at 200 and 400 me- ters, she also anchored the 1600 relay, which also starred Lea Ann Hart, Mary Wagner, and Tricia Ralston. Another Sophomore, Julie Wostrel, was the driving force in the field events. Julie placed 6th at state in the discus, as did the 4 X 400 relay. Overall, the girls experienced a good year, and have only good things to look ahead to. oo 600 RELA ELAT RELAY GO GOING GO I HO The State Qualifying 4X400 relay team of Lea Ann Hart, Mary Wagner, Tricia Raison, and Patty Van Brocklin speaks for itself. Squad; Promise For The Future This year's track team was quite small; only 15 members, led by seniors Kevin Kehne and Kelly Eisenbeiss, but the squad shows great potential. Our two state qualifiers, David Fritz in the pole vault, and Mike Wagner in the high jump are both Juniors, and both already hold school records in those events. These two, along with a host of fine young sprinters, distance men, hurdlers, and field events, should spell success for Bulldog track in the coming year. There are high points, and low points, and all of them bring out the will in us to do better. The challenge for improvement is the key, whether it be on the field or in the classroom; on the court or on stage. Bulldogs are always striving to put out their best effort. This year's sports were no different. We had many peaks, including the dramatic win over Pierce on a last minute field goal in our opening football game, the midseason turnaround of our volleyball team, who defeated previously unbeaten Pierce in the district finals, and went on to the State Tournament, and the qualifying of five players in both the State Wrestling Tournament and Girls Track Meet. Our low spots were also evident by the injuries which ruined our chances in football, and the basketball team which never got untracked. But through it all, from our Junior High Programs, where the students learn fundamentals, clear through the varsity level, and including the students in Special Education, who competed well at the Special Olympics, athletics builds our character, our pride, and our sportmanship. With Cheerleading camps, and practice in the park, these girls know that they, as well as the team they are supporting, are on display at each game. There are three different groups of cheerleaders. One group is in charge of girls sports - volleyball and basketball. The other groups are responsible for cheering boys basketball and wrestling, and combine forces for the football season. Although they are often taken for granted, the cheerleaders are an important part of sports. The crowd will wait for them to start the spirit which generates the winning attitude in our athletes. The girls take pride in their appearance and the cooperation among them as they perform their routines is evident. The Varsity Marching Band performed for all 4 home foot- ball games (both pre-game and halftime) as well as the annual homecoming parade. The high- light of the Marching Band came when we re- ceived the 2nd place trophy in parade compe- tition at Wayne State Band Day. The Pep Band was again active supporting the athletic team. The high point of the season was when the pep band supported the volleyball team with their wins at districts, the regional playoffs, and their appearance at the State tournament. Concert Band opened up the year at the annual Veterans Day program, and also performed at Bulldog Band Night, Christmas program, pre- contest, district contest, and commencement. Instrumental students received 10 superiors out of 12 entries at contest, including the 25th consecutive superior for the Concert Band. The madrigal singers, under the direction of Miss Kathy Da Kavan, combined their musical talents and speech abilities to produce the Elizabethan Dinner on December 12. The dinner, attended by many people from the school and community, is an enactment of a festive occasion during medieval times. The guests were treated to a series of vocal and dramatic performances before, during, and after the meal. What occasion is complete without the jester? Lori Polak entertained all with her antics. Host couple Scott Heaton and Gail Fischer inspect the dining room after the guests have arrived. THE MADRIGAL SINGERS: Rita Tauber, Beth York, Amy Harder, Lori Booth, Syndee McManigal, Karen Tauber, Jan Nielsen, Gail Fischer, Randy Milne, Brian Goiter, Kevin Young, Scott Heaton, Hans Banitt, Mike Farnik, Jeff Owens, and Roger Doerr. The Duet Acting team of Shelly Ewald and Amy Harder also qualified for State. At the State Contest, Amy Harder placed 6th and Shala Jelinek placed 5th. The team participated in several other contests, and did well. The one-act play was also a success. The cast of Lori Booth, Shelly Ewald, Amy Harder, and Deb Abbott, placed third at the NENAC contest, and Amy Harder was chosen as best actress. Shelly Ewald, as defense attorney Stevens presents her case. On Monday evening it was good enough to win aquittal for her client. Creighton's Drama department produced The Night of January 16th , a play by Ayn Rand which enacts a murder trial in New York. Karen Andre is being tried for the slaying of Bjorn Faulkner, her employer, and possibly her lover as well. The problem - no body. So the jury has to decide whether Faulkner is even dead, much less murdered. And the jury is the audience. At the beginning of the trial, 12 names are selected for jury duty, and it is these twelve who must decide the case. A rather interesting note is that on the first night of the production, Miss Andre was found innocent, while the next night, with the same script, a different jury decided she was guilty. A verbal dispute erupts between prosecution and defense. Participation By Audience Members The prosecution bench plans their attack. Nancy Faulkner, her father John Graham Whitfield, and District Attorney Flint sit as the Baliff watches intently. John Graham Whitfield denies a charge. The baliff detains Larry Regan, an admitted mobster. Elmer Sweeney reads his testimony to the jury. Defendent Karen Andre challenges the prosecuting attorney. A light comedy about young love, this play takes place in New York City. Debutante, a high fashion magazine, each year sponsors a nationwide contest. The winners come to New York to be Debutant sub-editors for a month. This play takes a look at young women from all walks of life, and how they react to the high society of New York. The plot focuses upon these young women, their lives and how they are being changed, and the widely diverse encounters which they experience, including, of course, the young men with whom they fall in love. Just as we never see the actors on stage without their costumes and make up, neither do we see many of the people who are responsible for the successful production of a play. The following are the otherwise anonymous people who were never seen on stage, but without whom the productions would never have taken place. Due to a shortage of personnel this year, the yearbook staff had to work well into summer vacation to complete this annual. If the book is later in arriving than you expected, this is the reason why. The advisor apologizes for this inconvenience, and uses this opportuni- ty to suggest that students interested in en- joying a well made yearbook should volun- teer their services in order to produce a well made yearbook. Special thanks go to all the members who stuck around after school dis- missed, and most of all to Mr. Dick Wray and Mr. Randy Kliment for their much appreci- ated help in the late goings this spring. In elections held in the fall. Deb Abbott was elected Student Body President. Throughout the year, she and the rest of the Student Council worked hard to represent the students. One of their main accomplishments was to organize a volleyball tournament, which allowed the students to receive some re- creation during the long winter lunch hours in the gym. In the spring, the Council also decided to elect officers before school got out, so they could plan for next year. Rick Wilmes was elected Student Body President for 1982-83. C-Club Purchases Weight Equipment The C-Club was involved in many activities in the 1981-82 school year. Homecoming activities involved a float and the picking of homecoming candidates. Candidate Larry Nielsen was elected King . The annual C-Club Chili and Soup supper was again very successful, with proceeds going toward the purchase of weight equipment. The athletic department decided to purchase this additional equipment for the new revised weight room, and the C- Club and all athletes held a Pancake Feed in April to raise money for it. With these events, and sponsoring concessions at track meets, the C-Club hopes to raise all the money needed. The year ended with the annual Steak Fry and initiation at the city park. For the next 5 days, strange sights would be seen in the Creighton High hallways. Whether it be punk rock garb, or dad's grubby over-hauls; finest Sunday suit or black pants and red shirt, the Bulldog Students went all out dur- ing Spirit Week before Homecoming. Friday afternoon, after all the costumes were worn, and the entire school decorated, the pep rally was staged. It was highlighted by the homecoming coronation, coronation, where last year's royalty Connie Sukup and Joel Neumann relinquished their crowns to Kathy Fuchtman and Larry Nielsen. In the Evening, the big game was played. With students and alumni alike cheer- ing on the Big Red, it seemed sure that the Bulldogs would turn around their 5 game slump. But alas, Hartington CC prevailed 9-7, putting a damper on the occasion. But the chance to meet with friends old and new at the Homecom- ing Dance revived the fallen spirits, and reminded us of good times past. Graduation Day had arrived, and with it the flood of memories and emotions which accompany such occasions: Memories of friends made, lost, and remade; of classes loved and hated; of home- comings, proms tournaments, contests, vacations. All of these and more brought tears to the eyes of many. The processional over, the invocation was spoken by Rev. Paul Banitt. Following an introduction by class president Kevin Kehne, salutatorians Kathy Fuchtman and Faye Stevens addressed the audi- ence. The Creighton Band then saluted the class by playing a medley of songs. Roger Doerr gave the valedictory address, and upon nis conclusion, the Chorus sang their accolades to the departing seniors. The various honors, awards, and scholarships that had been won were announced, and finally, the moment was at hand. As each class member re- ceived his diploma, surely similar thoughts were in each mind: High School was a thing of the past, and the future will become exactly wnat we allow it to be. 72 Salutatorian Faye Stevens receives her statuette from principal Richard Caldwell.
