Creighton lost only to O'Neill and Plainview. However, the Bulldogs beat two teams that had never been beaten by Creighton before: Randolph and Elgin Pope John. The most successful part of the Bulldog's wrestling story was told in tournaments and invitationals. Creighton wrestlers won the Wayne, Neligh, and Plainview invitationals, placed second in the NENAC tournament, and in District action. The high placement in Districts was the best placement ever by a Creighton wrestling squad. In fact, eight of the twelve varsity place 6th or better. Four wrestlers Qualified for state tournament action: Jay Buerman, record: 22 - 1; Tim Nielsen, record: 21-5; Mike McKay, record: 22 - 4; and Nick Weies, record: 10 - 3. The Spirit Club started the excitement with Spirit Days; Make Yourself Noticed Day , T-Shirt Day , 50's Day , Dress-Up Day , and Black and Red Day . The Cheerleaders sold Bulldog buttons, and Can the Eagles ribbons. Wednesday, votes were cast for King and Queen. A Homecoming pep rally was held Thursday, Oct. 4, which consisted of music by the pep band; cheerleader skits and routines, and yell competition between students, faculty, and parents; Bob Wilmes as a guest speaker; and Coach Wray gave an update on the football team which put in long and hard practice hours that week. Afterwards, King and Queen candidates were announced and the Royal Court was crowned. Friday Spirit and excitement was at its peak. Students could hardly keep their minds on their school work. The annual homecoming parade was held in the afternoon, in which the band, the king and queen, their court, and other candidates participated along with a large number of floats. By the time the game started the team, fans, and parents were all fired up and the fire kept burning as Creighton went to the locker room at halftime with a 7-0 lead. The team came back out onto the field with as much enthusiasm as when it left and held O'Neill scoreless and ended up with a final score: Creighton, 25 - O'Neill, 0. After the game Creighton celebrated the successful Homecoming week with a Victory Dance at the city hall. Speech Team Does Well In Class A The speech team had a successful year considering the tough competition they had to face. They won second place in MEM AC competition with three members winning the best of their divisions. They were: Mona Koppelman for her poetry selections on Civilization, Shala Jelinek, the only Freshman on the team, for her informative speech on V.D., and Rich Salmen for his persuasive speech on gun control. At Class A Districts, three members qualified for state competition. They were: Mona Koppelman, Kay Morrill for her after dinner speech on mankind's emphasis on beauty, and Karen Wagner for her persuasive speech on suicide. Also at Districts, the Creighton team tied with Pierce for third place - a good showing for a smaller school against larger ones. Stale Qualifiers: Above left; Mona Koppelman, Right; Karen Wagner, Center; Kay Morrill. 67 Speech Team: Rich Salmen, David lundt, Shelly Wagner, fulie Shala Jelinek, Betsy Haverkamp. Where Have All the Lightening Bugs GoneI dealt with this love, and the barriers a person has to break down to find romance and Jeff Moehlen- hoff played the boy. An obnoxious policeman was played by Rich Salmen. At a Beetle's Pace was concerned with love which had lasted a long time and had undergone many changes. The two cast members were Julie Ewald and Lars Andersen. Both of these plays couldn't have been put on without the help of Betsy Haverkamp and Barb Schulte the student directors. Professor Kokintz (Ron Myers) explains the new Q- bomb to General Snippet (Rod Falter), The President of the U.S. (Lars Andersen), and the Secretary of State (Dan Largen). Arthur), and Gina Prochaska (Queen Guenivere) enjoy the Madrigal Dinner. The Drama Department actually had two One- Acts this year. One was Where Have All the Lightening Bugs Cone? This did well at NENAC but it was decided to change it to Silence . Silence was concerned about the interactions, or rather the lack of them, between the three main characters. The husband was played by Rich Salmen, the unhappy wife was played by Mona Koppelman, and the wife's older lover was Lars Andersen. The Madrigal's Elizabethan Dinner was enlivened by the members of the Advanced Speech Class which, under the direction of Kathy Kavan, produced The Knights of the Round Table written by Mona Koppelman. The cast was made up of: Steve McKay - Lancelot, Betsy Haverkamp - Morgan LaFay, Rich Salmen - King Arthur, Gina Prochaska - Queen Guenivere, Shelly Wagner - Lady-in-Waiting, Alan Homan - Merlin, and Connie Sukup - Narrator. The rest of the Advanced Speech Class served as crew. Thanks to everyone's efforts the play was a success. Some of the projects of the Spirit Club this year were: Picnic supper and yell practice (Pre-warmup for the seasons). Pep rallies, Sold concessions at all games. Sponsored parents nights, Served the athletic banquet, Sponored busses to games and cheering our teams on to victory, Made posters promoting team spirit, Held national coaches day breakfast, Built a Homecoming float, Chose Homecoming King and Queen candidates loan Oltjenbruns and Jeff Wilmes. Cheerleaders Support Teams The Cheerleaders had a busy year supporting the teams and promoting school spirit. They decorated team members lockers to give them an extra boost before games. During the summer they attended cheerleading camp at Wayne State College where they improved their skills and learned many new ideas. Through the year they had the regular responsibilities of pep rallies and cheering at games but also sponsored activities such as coaches day and parents' nights. For coaches day, the cheerleaders took the coaches out to breakfast and gave each a badge to wear. Homecoming was a very special event this year and a very unusual one because the council revised its usual procedures and had the actual coronation Thursday night, along with the parent-teacher-student pep rally. Christmas was also unique because of a visit from Santa Claus. The honors of Miss Merry Christmas and Mr. Happy New Year went to Julie Jensen and Tyon Larson. Mr. and Mrs. Santa Claus were Bill Hakonson and Kathy Kavan. Of course Jeff could not have done all this alone. He got a lot of help from the sponsor and other members of the council.
