When we returned in the fall, we realized we had moved up one cog in the wheel. We were juniors. The officers we elected were: Jeanette Wilkerson, president, Naomi Ewell, vice-president, Dempsey Vaughan, secretary, and Walton Brumley, treasurer. Our sponsor this year was Miss Gresham, our new science and commercial teacher. Early in the fall we ordered our class rings which impressed upon us more deeply the fact that we would soon be seniors. Our room exceeded its goal in the annual magazine sale with Dempsey Vaughan as high salesman not only for our room but also for the school, thus receiving a radio and a gold statuette for his achievement. Three boys from our class were on the newly formed basketball team: Dempsey Vaughan, Eugene Fleming, and Elwood Styron, while Naomi Ewell, Pat Munden, and June Carroll represented our class by being cheerleaders. Jackie Nhite- hurst won the WI Speak For Democracy' contest for Creeds and competed againsi the other schools in the county. Early in the spring, Nita Etheridge won second place in the county in the annual public speaking contest for the state entitled WOpportunities for Young People on Virginia Farms.H As June approached, we realized that our Junior days would soon be gone forever. Upon re-entering school we knew now that we were tops and that we were ready for new and promising adventures. Being seniors meant Usenior privi- legesu and being dignified. Eugene Fleming was elected president of our class with Naomi Ewell, Jeanette Wilkerson, and Dempsey Vaughan, as vice- president, secretary, and treasurer, respectively, and Miss Gresham was again our sponsor. We had a football team for the first time this year and Eugene Fleming, Dempsey Vaughan, and Elwood Styron represented our class on the team. Nita Etheridge, Jackie Whitehurst, Naomi Ewell, Jeanette Wilker- son, and June Carroll were members of the basketball team. Eugene Fleming was elected president of the Student Council Association. Early in the fall we took a trip to Charlottesville to attend the University of Virginia- George Washington football game and to visit Monticello and other historical places of interest. Just before the Christmas holidays we decided to publish an annual and eagerly we began to work on it. Not long after that our attention was turned to the graduation invitations, our senior pictures, and the annual senior play. When our grades were averaged, it was disclosed that Nita Etheridge led the class with an average of 95, and thatJackie Whitehurst, with an average of 94, had won second place. The weeks flew by and the great day of graduation arrived. We marched around the school feel- ing important, a little sad at the thought of leaving the place where we had had so many good times, and yet, quite thrilled with the new life that lay before us. Some of us would go to college, some would embark right away upon our careers. It was time now to turn our heads to the more serious thoughts of life, and we fully realized that fact.
