W. Webb as our sponsor. Oh! if only we could hurry up and become seniors. Despite our difficulties we were a hopeful group. The fall and winter flew rapidly by leaving memories of three big parties, Thanksgiving holidays, and Christmas holidays After our carefree days of holiday fun, we returned to school with examina- tions staring us in the face, and we gave a sigh of relief when we learned that we had passed. We watched the new term arrive and with it the first signs of approaching spring. Spring came, bringing Easter and spring fever. We managed, however, to shake off that certain feeling and to settle down to work on our last lap of the 'rat' year. With examinations safely over, we left Creeds for three months of summer vacation. Our officers for the year were: June Carroll, president, Nita Etheridge, vice-president, Melvin Cooper, secretary, and Leah Ray Atwood, treasurer. It was with the thrilling knowledge of being sophomores that we entered school the following September. Our experience as sophomores pleased us greatly and under the leadership of lr. J. E. Garrett we prospered with much success. We elected as our officers for the year: Leah Ray Atwood, president, Nancy Richardson, vice-president, Eugene Fleming, secretary, and Jackie Whitehurst, treasurer. Under these capable leaders we progressed rapidly and Christmas soon rolled around. Seven of us were invited to join the Beta Club: Jackie Whitehurst, Nita Etheridge, Jeanette Wilkerson, June Carroll, Leah Ray Atwood, Eugene Fleming, and Dempsey Vaughan. Since there was no Junior class due to the beginning of the new twelve-year system, we rejoiced in the privilege of entertaining the seniors early in the spring. To finance this project, we gave 'Miracles of Spring,W a musical comedy with dances and songs. Everyone pitched in and did his part, and finally we gave the banquet, which all the teachers, sophomores, and seniors attended, at the Pine Tree Inn. Then once again we found ourselves at the beginning of another glorious three months vacation. ,L J.I,' ' ' - Y.. , .. - . - ,. ,' ,V. -, . ' 'L ,I.Z'Z'.l.ESl:.ii4.4L-.-. . , ,. ,.1.:..- 5- fx J... ali I. -.Y When we returned in the fall, we realized we had moved up one cog in the wheel. We were juniors. The officers we elected were: Jeanette Wilkerson, president, Naomi Ewell, vice-president, Dempsey Vaughan, secretary, and Walton Brumley, treasurer. Our sponsor this year was Miss Gresham, our new science and commercial teacher. Early in the fall we ordered our class rings which impressed upon us more deeply the fact that we would soon be seniors. Our room exceeded its goal in the annual magazine sale with Dempsey Vaughan as high salesman not only for our room but also for the school, thus receiving a radio and a gold statuette for his achievement. Three boys from our class were on the newly formed basketball team: Dempsey Vaughan, Eugene Fleming, and Elwood Styron, while Naomi Ewell, Pat Munden, and June Carroll represented our class by being cheerleaders. Jackie Nhite- hurst won the WI Speak For Democracy' contest for Creeds and competed againsi the other schools in the county. Early in the spring, Nita Etheridge won second place in the county in the annual public speaking contest for the state entitled WOpportunities for Young People on Virginia Farms.H As June approached, we realized that our Junior days would soon be gone forever. Upon re-entering school we knew now that we were tops and that we were ready for new and promising adventures. Being seniors meant Usenior privi- legesu and being dignified. Eugene Fleming was elected president of our class with Naomi Ewell, Jeanette Wilkerson, and Dempsey Vaughan, as vice- president, secretary, and treasurer, respectively, and Miss Gresham was again our sponsor. We had a football team for the first time this year and Eugene Fleming, Dempsey Vaughan, and Elwood Styron represented our class on the team. Nita Etheridge, Jackie Whitehurst, Naomi Ewell, Jeanette Wilker- son, and June Carroll were members of the basketball team. Eugene Fleming was elected president of the Student Council Association. Early in the fall we took a trip to Charlottesville to attend the University of Virginia- George Washington football game and to visit Monticello and other historical places of interest. Just before the Christmas holidays we decided to publish an annual and eagerly we began to work on it. Not long after that our attention was turned to the graduation invitations, our senior pictures, and the annual senior play. When our grades were averaged, it was disclosed that Nita Etheridge led the class with an average of 95, and thatJackie Whitehurst, with an average of 94, had won second place. The weeks flew by and the great day of graduation arrived. We marched around the school feel- ing important, a little sad at the thought of leaving the place where we had had so many good times, and yet, quite thrilled with the new life that lay before us. Some of us would go to college, some would embark right away upon our careers. It was time now to turn our heads to the more serious thoughts of life, and we fully realized that fact. To the freshman we bequeath the privilege of looking down on the oncoming freshman instead of being looked down on by the sophomores. And last but not least, to Mr. Routten and the faculty we leave our greatest appreciation for all the time and patience they have given us in the years we spent in Creeds, and we hope the incoming seniors won't tax their physical, mental, and moral strength as much as we have. We also welcomed a new classmate, Jackie Snell, who transferred to our school from Columbia, North Carolina. Many things happened during the fall. Our class received the P. T. A. prize of five dollars for having one hundred per cent membership in that organization. We ordered our class rings and one of the Juniors, Velma Stradling, withdrew to enter the state of matrimony. At Christmas we had a party and presented a gift to our sponsor and our room mother. A short while later, we received our class rings and had our pictures made for the annual. The most important event of the year was the Junior-Senior Banquet and we had to face the problem of raising money for this occasion. The class members carried on various projects and with everyone co-operating, these projects were very successful and the needed funds were accumulated. The banquet was held in April at the Paramount Restaurant and Judge Floyd Kellam was the guest speaker. The members of the class were very proud of their attendance record for the year. They had the highest per cent of attendance in the county for the months of September and January and they were in second place in October, November, and December. Faye Williams was the high salesman in the school in the magazine contest and the Junior Class, with her help, sold 360.05 worth of magazines. All in all, we had a busy year and we are looking forward to being dignified Seniors next fall. 4 '.iJ ' sovnomomss '1L'J' 'J ,, , Y ..1 --,,,-.,.- ...-., f- V -- - .- V ,H ....-...--...........-.. - W T.
