SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS Nancy Whitfield President Merritt Newton Vice President Sarah Mangum Secretary Pat Zabriskie Treasurer MOTTO Lives of great men all remind us We can make our lives sublime, And, departing, leave behind us. Footprints on the sands of time. —Longfellow. CLASS SONG (Tune: Till We Meet Again) It ' s time to say goodbye to all our friends, From years of travel now our journey ends. O ' er rugged hills and rugged roads, We ' ve helped each other with his load. Now as we go and as we leave behind, The dearest hearts that we could ever find, We praise thee with our every song, Dear old Creedmoor High. To you dear Creedmoor High we say adieu, To leave our friends and teachers all so true, The days we ' ve spent here soon will be To us some cherished memory. Within our hearts we ' ll hold you ever near, Familiar scenes will often reappear. To you dear school we ' ll give our best, Dear old Creedmoor High! Janice Hollowell, Poetess COLORS Maroon and White FLOWER White Carnation CLASS POEM When we come to the end of a journey long, The tears show a bit in our eyes. It ' s so hard to say goodbye to you. And we can hardly realize That from here we ' ll part and we ' ll leave behind Our friends and our teachers true. In our thoughts throughout the years to come. There ' ll be memories of you. Well, this is the end of our happy days That we have spent with you, But no, not the end of everything; There ' s always a beginning, too. As we travel out into this lonely world, We may fail although we try. It ' s to you we give our every best. All for you our Creedmoor High! Janice Hollowell, Poetess Til H O 11 (ill THE YEARS On September 4, 1940, we now the seniors of 1952, entered the first grade under the leader¬ ship of Miss Louisa Rosemond. There we struggled for nine long months learning, which seems now very little but to us we had learned it all — yet knew only our ABC ' s. In the second grade, under the guidance of Mrs. Lucille Lyon, we struggled on and learned to read. We had two new students — Pat Zabriskie from Lima, Ohio and Mildred Greene from Stem, N. C. We were sorry when Joanne Roberts moved to Lillington, but she came back in three months. Evidently she liked Creedmoor better. In our third year Miss Mittilulah Pittard was our teacher. We gained another new student from Stem, David Harris. We shall never forget how Miss Pittard worked teaching us our multiplication tables. Beginning the fourth grade, we had Miss Ollie Lyon as our advisor. One thing we remember so well about the fourth grade was our geography course, which included the study of the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers. That year the school was badly damaged by fire. In the fifth grade our class was divided. Some of us went to Miss Ollie ' s fourth and fifth grades, but most of us took our respective places in Miss Marilyn Boyette ' s room. Eddie Lou Horton came from Wilton High School. Mrs. John Newell and Miss Margaret Wilson were our sixth grade teachers. New among us was Edith Hobgood. We were all sad when death took one of our dear classmates, Barbara Curl. Beginning the seventh grade, we had a number of new students, but they all left that same year or the next. Mrs. Goodwin and Mrs. Spivey were our instructors. In September of 1947 we entered Mrs. Margaret McIntosh ' s eighth grade. Clarence Pearce came from Raleigh. Here Mrs. McIntosh prepared us for our entrance into high school the following year. After eight long years of diligent study we finally entered high school. Miss Annie B. Bullock was our freshman homeroom teacher. The high school faculty that year was Miss Aiken, Mrs. Gallo¬ way, Miss Hester — who became Mrs. Weldon Bullock, Miss Edith Hall, Mr. F. L. Wilson, and Mr. J. H. Newell, principal. Of course everything was new but we enjoyed it and were glad to add Mary Broughton from Durham and Melvin Edmondson from Tarboro. The next year we entered Miss Hall ' s room with Mr. A. W. Taylor as our new principal. Other new teachers were Mr. Sidney Ray, boys ' coach and physical education instructor; Miss Elna Mangum, commerce and school, treasurer,- and Mrs. Pat Fleming as girls ' coach. We lost Louis Sandling and Billy Adams but gained Janice Hollowell and Chemis Stanfield. We were proud to have our boys win the county basketball championship of ' 50. We lest a number of students near the end of school by marriage — Lynette Green, Mary A. Lanier, Ola Mayton, and Jackie Bowles. The following year we had Mrs. McIntosh instruct us through cur eleventh year. There were two main events which we remember from this year — getting class rings and preparing for our Junior- Senior Banquet. We spent many hours trying to originate ideas for our Southern Plantation theme. New in our class this year were Bill Dixon, Douglas Newton, and Charles O ' Neal. Three more of our classmates left after marrying — Wilma Adcock, Bcbbie Lou Estes, and Barbara Arnold. In the summer of ' 51 Melvin Edmondson joined the Air Corps. The only new teacher that year was Miss Car- raway, home economics teacher. Our senior year began on September 5, 1951, with thirty-two students. We had Miss Marjorie Aiken as our homeroom teacher. Ann Jenkins, Shirley James, Burnell Newcomb and Shirley Whitt be¬ came new members. We also welcomed back Mary Ann Roberts. Miss Aiken, Mrs. McIntosh, Miss Mangum, Mr. Wilson, and Mr. Taylor remained with us. Added to our faculty were Mr. Bill Joyner — graduate of U.N.C. as physical education instructor and boys ' coach; Mrs. Ramona Cash, home ec¬ onomics; and Miss Sue Graham, science and girls ' coach. Of all our years in school this seemed to be the most enjoyable. There was hard work but we never gave up. We enjoyed play practice, an¬ nual staff meetings, and other senior activities. We have fourteen who have been together for twelve long and happy years. They are Mary Arnold, Sidney Arnold, Mildred Brogden, Jeane Bullock, Rosalie Coley, Shirley Fuller, Polly Howerton, Betty Lou Jones, Jenny Knott, Bobby Mangum, Sarah Mangum, Merritt Newton, Elaine O ' Briant, and Nancy Whitfield. As our days at Creedmoor High come to a close and with our graduation so near at hand we are delighted to be called Seniors . By sharing our troubles, thoughts, and ideas we have learned to love one another. But as we leave we realize that our journey together is complete and that we are ready to step forward to make our own path vays. Signed this twenty-first day of May in the year of our Lord, one thousand, nine hundred and fifty- two of the Senior Class of Creedmoor Hiqh School. T iestators: Betty Lou Jones Clarence Pearce, Jr. Witness: Corn E. Stuff. H TIME GOES BY Since Bill Dixon and I were stubborn and did not get our chests X-Rayed when we were seniors, we contracted a terrible disease, Two Bugs A Loping . We died a long, slow, painful death at the Come In And Die Hospital , where Pat Zabriskie was head doctor and the staff of nurses included Shirley Fuller, Betty Lou Jones, Shirley James, Sarah Mangum and Jenny Knott. In our wake our dear Class¬ mates filed by our coffins and our spirits overheard them talking of their various occupations and professions. There was Mrs. Billy Peed, the former Nancy Whitfield, conversing with Mrs. Bill Allen, the for¬ mer Joanne Roberts. They were talking about, the people in our class who chose the medical profession and they wondered if they had anything to do with our long, painful death. Joanne told Nancy also that Mildred Greene was head bookkeeper for Sit and Rareback, Inc. Then Bobby Mangum and Clarence Pearce, our professional basketball players, were overheard discussing some of the male members of our class. They mentioned Major General Chemis Stanfield who was Commander-in-Chief of the Far East. They talked for a short while about Sidney Arnold, Charles O ' Neal, and Douglas Newton and what prosperous farmers they were, each owning several farms. Poetess Janice Hollowelf, or shall I say Mrs. David Harris, began tearfully mumbling what she was going to compose for our epitaphs. David, a successful stockbroker in New York City, came over to comfort her and asked if she had seen either Polly Howerton, who was still waiting for her sailor, or Merritt Newton, now a civil engineer at the North Carolina State College in Raleigh. Then in came Mary Broughton, who was still typing at Watts Hospital, with Eddie Lou Horton, one of the employees-at State Hospital at Butner, North Carolina, and Mrs. Battle Ellington, whom we knew as Rosalie Coley. We overheard them mention Mary Arnold, Burnell Newcomb, Edith Hobgood, and Shirley Whitt, some of our classmates that were still sitting home patiently waiting for their men but were about to decide that their standards were a little too high. Mary Ann Lanier, the girl in our room who ended up being Mrs. Bill Roberts even before our gradua¬ tion was telling Mildred Newcomb, Mr. Wilson ' s assisTant softball coach, about the job offered Ann Jenkins, the senior beauty, by Talented Picture Producers. She refused because they would not lei William Moss take Joe E. Brown ' s place at the studio. We hear d someone scolding her triplets and found that it was Elaine O ' Briant, now Mrs. James Smith. She was scolding her children Sink, Sank and Sunk. Last of all came our dear teacher, Miss Aiken, with a few more grey hdirs and perhaps a little thinner, who had retired after our graduation, for she feared she could never undertake another senior class — not after ours.
