U.S.: New and Different This year you may have come across an unfamiliar, but friendly face in the halls of CHS. lt could have been Maryola Kups, one of the exchange students. Maryola is from Borlange, Sweden. She is staying with Deb Curtis during her visit here. Dancing and prac- tically any other involvements with music are what interests her most, with volleyball being a favorite also. Although Maryola has many activities in mind, her main interest while staying here is simply to live and to enjoy America . The school system in the U.S. is different than in Swe- den, and is seemingly more ben- eficial there. As far as a career is concerned, Maryola feels you can't plan a career. . 10. l-Maryola and Otto explore the trails at Pine Hills. 4-Maryola and Deb visit after school. 5+ I-Otto, Deb, Maryola and Will rest at Wabash College. 3-Will and Otto get together on an Autumn day. A- One of the two smiling faces of the exchange students that you see of CHS is Otto Sponke. Otto is from Boehum, West Ger- many ond is staying with Will Ludwig during his visit to the United States. Out of all his sub- iects, Otto likes Geometry best, with lunch a close second. Otto is on the tennis team and likes to swim, but 6:30 practices ore too early for him. Otto's favorite new food in the U.S. is sweet potatoes. He also added that Americans eat a lot of hamburg- ers. After completing high school, Otto plans to go to the University in West Germany and hopes to become an architect. .lI. 2 s s CHS Shows Spirit, Pride second place with Roost 'Em at the Goalpost . Attendants from left to right: senior Sharon Franklin, iunior Becky Elmore, and foreign exchange student Maryola Kups surround Queen Tammy Vaught. -The seniors, with Trap the Tigers , won the homecom- ing float contest for 1976. . ,T - of ..1'-Jin During Homecoming Week the float contest with Come Back You Fraidy Cat . -Athenian students backed the team all week long with great enthusiasm. The home- coming parade on Friday afternoon climaxed the week of activity. As you can see here, there was definitely no lack of spirit on the part of CHS students. ln the C.H.S 1-Seniors gather in front hall at lunch for intellectual discussion? 2-Ken Keltner deals with sophomores buying class rings. 3-Jeff Cotten completes an assignment in woodshop. 5-C. Pic tured here are R. Titus, L. Evans, and D. Titus. 8-Seniors worked diligently on their float to obtain first place. -I5 A Athenian Lite Revolves Around C.H.S. Activities Football games provide entertainment and a place to gather. -Warm Autumn days gave J. Eastman, L. Barge- son, C. Bonifield, and M. Dulin a chance to enioy the outdoors. I6- 3- 41 Sophomore boys begin to feel at home in our high school atmosphere. Eating out for lunch makes the day go faster for S. Caress and many other C.H.S. students. i V i 4 ? 4 5 1 . Q . They rank highly in academics as they swept the Exercise of Knowledge contest at the Mall. Other out- standing achievements were pro- Lindsey Nelwn Abney Jackie Gail Addler Baseball-I 0 ven in the float contest for Homecoming in which they placed lst. The new Bunso party took a winning streak in this year's class officer election when three of the four candidates were elected to serve the Senior class. Ps Extra-curricular activities play an important part in the Seniors life. However, as the Seniors leave the halls of CHS, their tal- ents in their varied activities will be left as memories to trace when they are gone, but never forgotten. :HF Mark Willamson-President George Roberts-Vice President fi f f N - hoto not available John P. The squad is the largest ever, consisting of seven seniors, seven iuniors, and four sopho- mores. Terry Servies and Belinda Timmons serve as their captains. C.H.S. Band Marches Marching and concert camps started the year for C.H.S. marching band. They went to Indiana Beach for a park concert in July of 76. State and regional contest proved to be exciting and fulfilling for all band members. Parades kept the marching band very busy, marching in the Christmas, Bicentennial, and American Legion parades. The band was also asked to perform in the Indiana State Homecoming Parade. This has certainly been a successful year for the C.H.S. band, under the direction of Russell Ruby. Peggy Shaw, C.H.S. drum maior, and Jackie Vihlson, our maioretie, help conduct the march- ing band. Row Four: L. Kincaid, M. Elmore, B. Marshall, S. Gegner, K. Elder, K. Brett, B. Thompson, J. One such out- standing effort was put forth by senior halfback, Bob Kaeser. ln the ten games played, Bob rushed for 967 yards in 223 car- ries for a 4.3 yard-per-carry average. For the iunior varsity, halfback Terry Keller gave oppo- nents all they could handle, and a little more. Among his impres- sive statistics was o 234 yard rushing performance in one night's work. It was difficult to pin- point the exact cause, but incon- sistency and plain old bad luck could have been cited as contrib- uting factors. The loss of catcher Jeff Cohee less than one week prior to the first game with a bro- ken hand was definitely a psy- chological blow to the team. Another example of bad luck came at West Lafayette when John Archer's one-hit, 2-1 victory was turned into a 1-1 tie by a downpour, which ended play in the eighth inning. In the sec- tional, the inconsistent hitting, which was also a nemesis throughout the season, returned to help the Athenians lose a heartbreaker in eight innings, 2- 1 to Fountain Central. Hey man, we're finished at last, not only with this yearbook, but also with high school. And we thought you might be inter- ested in one final appraisal of life at dear old CHS. ln looking back, in seems like not so long ago we were walking the lower halls as sophomores. We were rather in awe, for a time, at the new surroundings and the upperclassmen. How- ever, it didn't take long for us to adiust and soon the year was gone. That summer everyone was getting their driver's licenses and suddenly we all realized that we were getting older. We headed into our iunior year, far more confident than we had the year before. Our confi- dence showed in our increasing abilities to cope with society. And our school spirit hit an all- time high as we saw CHS defeat North Montgomery in the sec- tional. As we entered our senior year, life seemed to become so complicated and fast-paced that we could barely keep up with it! Some of us saw our school spirit begin to ebb as we looked ahead to college and full-time employment. Some of us saw that same school spirit rise and create a controversy over the sectional pep session. These peo- ple were less than ecstatic over the principal's decision in the matter. And yet some, who had never developed school spirit, still had none. But we know of no prerequisite for life that includes high school spirit. We had different friends throughout our four years. Many semi-social cliques were formed. Many of us had close friends at North Montgomery and South- mont high schools. People moved here and became our friends. Friends moved away, some to remain friends, some to remain only in our memories. Our class also saw increasing changes in moral attitudes. Terms such as redneck , head , and jock crept into our vocabulary and were often used indiscriminately. At the same time, many opposed and spoke out against the use of such inane classifications. Overall, the increasing attitude of most of us seemed to be that everyone should do their own thing in the way they wanted to do it! Political attitudes and aware- ness was on the increase as many of us helped to elect a new President of the United States, James Earl Carter, Jr., better known as Jimmy . We became more keenly aware of the liberal or conservative views of our class mates. Discipline and self-discipline played an important part in our lives, tool Whether in athletics, classes, or after-school iobs, most of us had matured enough to handle the wins and losses of life. The realization of the responsibility forthcoming after graduation frightened some, and excited others. But everyone knew it was there. In summary, some times were good, some bad, some happy, some sad. The importance of the step we are taking can be sum- med up in the following quota- tion: lt's been fun, but most of all it's been!
