From then on even though we pretended to dislike school, our topics of conversation centered around buying new books, trading off our old ones, and buying those coveted class cords. Then with our plans only half completed, that day dawned much too bright and Page 5 HaIftime Confusion Prelude to on Enjoyable Evening! Page 6 Clash at Mid-field early. Even though the start of school was old hat to the seniors, they were as anx- ious as the underelassmen to renew old ae- quaintances and discuss the summer's events, not to mention show off their new senior cords. Of course, the lirst day was merely or' ganization, but the second day brought to us the lull reazlixalioii that seliool had 114'- IQIHI. That first Friday our football team 'JAN NN., if Susie Cunningham, Homecoming Queen-1955 Joe Crowns Susie as Attendants Watch sf -ft. As usual Homecoming high- lighted the season with the competition be- tween our classes and organizations for the trophy awarded for the best Hoat and walk- ing group. Susie Cunningham, whom we elected as queen, and her attendants reigned over the dance that climaxed the festivities. At last! . . . Our first vacation . . . Teachers Institute was held during the latter part of October. When we returned from our few days of rest QD we signed up for our season basketball tickets. A few weeks later we anxiously awaited the outcome of our parents' discussions with our teachers at open house. We hoped for the best, but expected the worst! The next week the county students joined us for the Montgomery County College Cwuidence Day. A highlight of the Christmas season was the annual Sunshine Christmas Ball which had as its theme Silver Bells. A two- Page week vacation followed the annual Christ- mas program presented by the Senior high chorus. january, our midwinter slump, was bright- ened by the change of semesters. Every Saturday in February seemed to be set aside for something special. Very early on the Saturday morning of February 5 five bus loads of music students traveled to Greencastle for the District Solo and En- 10 semble Contest. Of this group, over 80 first place ribbons were brought home! The next Saturday our wrestling squad won the sectional meet at Lafayette! Then the following week they placed seventh in the state meet at Bloomington! This same Saturday the first place winners in the Dis- trict Music Contest want to All State at Indianapolis. The Saturday of the twenty-sixth was THE day in the history of C. H. S.! After seven years we Hnally won a sectional basket- ball tournament! With incomparable en- thusiasm and humble pride we backed our boys all the way through the Regional vic- tory at Covington and the defeat by Gary Roosevelt in the Semi-Finals at Lafayette. On Friday March 25 all our choral stu- tents from grades ten through twelve went to Greencastle for the District Choral Fes- The Atheniettes Chorus Line! Page ll Raise ya' three, pardner. tival. With six other schools we practiced the songs we'd learned in chorus all year and that evening gave a rather impressive program for the public. Finally Easter vacation arrived with an extra day added for our exceptional basket- ball seasonl For most of us it was an ex- cellent opportunity for catching up on our sleep and finishing up those little odd jobs that had collected since Christmas! The Annual junior-Senior Banquet was held on Friday, March 15 and was another II 1, Il rl Dig Those Crazy Sun Glasses Mr. Payne and His Ampro Technicians VY , 2: '- -i2.iai..1-gf , r I , 29165-.fm -V I A It Takes Two to Tango successful and impressive affair. Then on April 29, after long hard work under the direction of Miss Scarseth, the seniors presented CAPTAIN APPLEIACK, a play a little different from any other pre- sented at C. H. S. The annual spring music festival featuring lnoth Junior and Senior bands and choral groups under the direction of Miss Canine and Mr. Spaulding was held in the gym on May 6. The junior-Senior prom, which was anx- iously awaited and planned land saved for! D was finally held on May lvl in the gym. The elegant decorations were centered around the theme of STARDUST. Baccalaureate and Commencement were soon over and the seniors held the proof that HIP, HIP HOORAY Page 18 And the Night Shall Be Made for Music The Chapel in the Sunlight Camera Hogs 1 I nd., The Local Race Track and Meeting Place lndustrious Book Worms llibrary helpersl L.. The underclassmen, however, did not breathe a sigh of relief until the third of June had passed and they were free from books and teachers for three months. The seniors looked down the now de- serted halls and realized that when fall came around they wouldn't be coming back. With mixed emotions we recalled the in- significant-yet somehow significant inci- dents which were part of our daily routine. Now they suddenly have assumed greater significance. The banging of locker doors . . . the last minute rush to home room . . . the strains of the organ drifting through the building . . . the dancing in the audi- torium . . . the 7th hour conferences with Senior Daze Mr. Darst . . . and the exuberant departure from school at the end of the day. To seniors these experiences have ended. such things as Bacalaureatte and Commence- ment are over and though we feel that an era has ended-there lies before us new worlds to conquerg challenges which will exercise the knowledge we have gained in Crawfordsville High School. Soon the members of the class of '55 will spread to the many areas of the country. The 164 members will go on to college, join the army, get married, or find jobs-demonstrae ing the fact that Commencement is not only the day of graduation but also a beginning, and that our diplomas serve as a passport to the future. As we had entered to learn six years ago, the class of 1955 now will go forth to serve! Page 17 fm W5 A Q -EW H-Yu Q-'P Q im W -,ff I s. 1-1' 5 W wfw 1. By the time we were in senior high we recog- nized him as a lively personality who was always available to offer a logical solution to any problems we might have. Mr. McCullough has served in the ca- pacity of junior high school principal for the past six years. Prior to this he was our basketball coach and a teacher. To him falls the responsibility of directing junior high activities. Mr. Eve, as superintendent of city schools, determines and maintains policies, serves as a contact between the school board, the teachers of the city school system. Administrative Aids Miss Patricia Pritchett 12nd from leftl, and Miss Mary Bowers 15rd from leftl , have the endless task of running the superintend- ents ofhce. They have many secretarial duties to perform for the city schools ad- ministration. By the same measure, Miss Patricia Run- yon Cleftb, and Miss Dorthea Knight frightb, take care of the similar responsi- bilities for the principals office. They assist Mr. McCullough and Mr. Darst in the sign- ing of blue slips, keeping files, and the many other small but necessary jobs that help Crawfordsville High School run smoothly. School Board The Board of Education is a body of civic minded citizens of Crawfordsville who are elected to serve the school city by the city council. They set the policies which the stu- dents and teachers of CHS follow. Seated Cleft to rightjz Hugo Prince. Mrs. Robert I-Iarz'ey. Gregory Lt!-1716. IORS The Senior Home Room was bursting at the seams with the largest Senior class in the history of Crawfordsville High School. I6-1 Seniors not only filled the traditional Home Room 203, but expanded into Room 200 which was easily stocked with the A's, B's, and C's of the class of '55. Mr. Hoke and Mr. Crecelius continued their task as Senior Class home room advisors, while Mr. Wells became an advisor for the first time. Since the first bell of the morning was moved up to 7:55 and the tardy bell didn't ring until S: 15, the traditional senior hall more than ever became the location of mass gatherings and slow-moving conges- tion. Class meetings during home room period became a frequent occurrence too. The officers of the class of 1955, elected early in the fall, were: jack Walker, presi- dent, Joe Allen, vice-president, Marilyn Todd, secretary, and Dick Dulin, treasurer. Another elected body of the senior class was the advisory board which served as the legislative group. lts members, elected by the class early in the school year, were: Marilyn Todd, Jack Walker, joe Allen, Susie Cunningham, Carolyn Hudson, Betsey Harvey, Rochelle Roche, Jerry Walker, john Horner, Dick Dulin, jim Showalter, Bill Balch, Jonell Otterman, Ed Scaggs. Prob- lems which were not significant enough to be discussed by the entire class and yet were important, were usually solved by the ad- visory board. The entire upper hall on the east side of the building was occupied as Junior Home Rooms. Chuck Cottingham was elected by the class as their president for the school year and Larry Weingartner was elected vice-presi- ,www IORS dent. Peggy Covey was secretary and Mryna Myers took up the treasurer's duties. Mr. Tatlock and Mr. Grater served as the class's faculty advisers. Page GT Concert Band The Crawfordsville High School Band began its activities the first day of school by preparing a half time show for the first home football game. During the marching season the 80-piece band drilled on South Green Street and at Tuttle Field each day during third period. The marching band was led by the drum major, Mickey Jeffries, and thc seiwni nlajorettes. This marching group performed at four football frames, the annual Santa Claus Dav .O ' . parade in uptown Crawfordsville, and attend- ed Purdue University's first Indiana High School Band Day. The 1:2 piece Pep Baud provided music for the various civic events when it would have been difficult to use a lull band. This group's autumn activities in- cluded the Kiwanis Kiddiels Day Parade, the Lions Halloween Parade, all four away foot- ball games, pep sessions before games, and so on. As cold weather approached and outdoor activity was ended, Mr. Spaulding, the di- rector, organized the Concert Band, composed Page 68 Mull' of 95 members which include many students from the junior band. This group worked Tuesday and Thursday noon for three months in preparation for the State Band Contest at Indianapolis Howe April 16. For the first time our band entered Class and since the competition was much higher they were unable to continue the constant rating of First which had been awarded previous CHS bands which entered class contests. At the same time, the regular third period band played at the home basketball games, and along with the Pep Band, assisted the Pep Block and the team through an excellent SCQISOII. The spring activities of the band included a concert on April 12, and another on May 6. The annual commencement exercises didnlt end the year for the band, however. They were invited to lead the parade on the open- ing day of the National Decathlon which will be held at VVabash July 1 and 2. The officers for the 1954-1955 high school band were: Edgar Husted, presidentg Mari- lyn Clark, vice-presidentg Marilyn NVilliams. secretaryg Ronnie Surber, Bill Schaaf, and john Cowan, quartermasters. We recall those cool autumn evenings which we spent on the bleachers at Hoover Field, the winter evening watch- ing Indiana's greatest sport in the CHS gym, and the mild weather that ac- companied the spring sports. We look back on the many trips we took with our friends and our parents to the ath- letic events away from home-those drives to Lebanon, Greencastle, and Laf- ayette. VVe remember the pep sessions and pep rallys in the gym, the audi- torium, and at Tuttle Fieldg and thc skits, the yell leaders, and music of thc band that was part of them. The dances and social events after games and pep rallys bring hack memories. The stu- dents of our school can proudly recall the wrestling team which placed 7th in the state and our basketball team's vic- torious climb from the sectional to the semi-finals. All of this was part of our year-1955- and sports at CHS. We learned to ap- preciate co-operation, sportsmanship. and school-spirit. Our school learned how to lose as well as how to win. And yet in our hearts there was always but one desire-to win for Crawfordsvillc High School! - Q FOOTBALL The seasons opener was sparked by a superb defense and two touchdown runs by Milt Kessler. Five touchdowns were scored in the first nine Athenian offensive plays, which, added to a fine defensive performance sparked by Paul Harden, the team put the skids on Sheridan by a 37 to 12 count. Coach Hoke had an excellent chance to see his subs in action since the first squad played only sixteen min- utes of thc game! CHS,s annual Homecoming was topped oft with a thrilling 13 to 12 squeeze over NVest Lafayette. Two-thirds of the schedule had been completed when the ATHENIAN was sent to the printers, and the tennis team was boast- ing an undefeated record. Nancy Hawkins, Susie Cunningham, and Don Sperry were all seniors, while the fourth yell leader, Peggy Covey, represented the junior class. Susie Cunningham began her yell leading in Tuttle Grade school and has been improv- ing ever since. She has been a yell leader for every year since the sixth grade. Nancy Hawkins had a similar career as a yell leader. She first worked with the eighth grade basket- ball team as an energetic yell leader and be- came a varsity leader in her junior year. Don Sperry was elected to the position of varsity yell-leader with the three girls in the spring of 195-1, but was stricken with polio during the summer. Although Don was unable to assume his job during the football season, he began working with the cheering section early in the basketball season. The pep and en- thusiasm of the students was increased greatly when Don Sperry led yells for our team in spite of his handicap. The fourth member of the yell leading squad was Peggy Covey who blended in with the three seniors to lead the CHS student body through the vari- ous athletic events of the year. Nliss Sttllll' was responsible for many of the accomplishments of the yell leaders as she served as their faculty adviser. Page 94 PEP BLOCK The Pep Block was originated by Dick Gnyer in 1951 and were then known as the Screamin' Demonsf, VVhen Mr. Guyer moved to lndianapolis Howe, Miss Stahr took over as the Pep Blocks adviser and director. The organization has grown from its small mem- bership in the heginning to a record of 178 memhers during the 1954-1955 school yearl The group developed many new yells, and performed many yells with the aid of large cards, nnnsnal motions, and so on. The mem- hers wore uniforms which varied during the season hetween white and hlue shirts. VVhite gloves were also employed by the Pep Block for an added effect. The organization traveled to a few of the away games and attended all three tonrneys in which Crawfordsville participated. Dur- ing the sectional, regional, and semi-Hnal the Pep Block was praised highly hy ohservers from other schools for their excellent spirit and support of the haskethall team. Nlr. DeXVitt himself complimented the group hy stating that a great deal of his team's success was due to the hacking of the Pep Block! Page 95 Program Notes Several years from now we'll see or hear little things that will bring back memories of C.H.S. in '55. Perhaps it will be a phrase of a popular song . . . a current cliche . . . or maybe an old Gold 8: Blue saved for some unremem- bered reason. For instance, the juke box at the Ginger Boo blaring the catchy Mr, Sandman and Hearts of Stone' '... For a while knee socks were all the rage, but the boys soon hooted them down ,... Pegged pants and pastel colors were sported by the real kool kats . . . Movie-goers were impressed with the powerful acting of Marlon Brando in On the Waterfront and by the lighthearted musical Seven Brider for Seven Brotherf' . . . Such George Gobelisms as Well, I'll be a dirty bird! became a standard part of everyone's vocabulary, as did Somebody goofedl' '... Some energetic souls still indulged in the Bunny Hop, but it was fading fast . . . Shake, Rattle, and Roll rocked the joint .... The auto designers really went wild with the new color com- binations . . . Pink and black were the cattiest', color combos . . . other weird hues were tangerine and heliotrope .... The blackboard in the lunchroom offered such thrilling statements as You may have spaghetti added' '... Mrs. Reddish started every time test with Hands in place-type' '... Remember joe Friday's oft used theme dum de dum dum . . . Crazy, aren't they? But they were all a part of our year. We'1l never forget them. Page 96 ,,- nn' S-W. 12. 4, 0? However, there are a few people who stand out from the rest, and we want to pay tribute to them. Mr. Hutton, our photographer, is certainly high on the list of helpful workers. Our thanks also goes to Indianapolis Engraving Company, whose prompt and excellent service helped in making the Athenian possible. Howell- Goodwin Printing Company and R. R. Donnelley and Sons Company receive our gratitude for printing and binding the book. Two important people remain-our advisors, Mrs. Strum and Mr. Weiss. They helped us plan and execute our ideas, and when things went wrong they helped us work out a solution. The Athenian has required much time and hard work, but we linish our labors with regret. It has been an enjoyable experience. The StaH. Page 100
