In Appreciation We, the editors of the 1953 Athenian, present this book to our fellow students with the hope that they will find within its pages, in the years which lie ahead, valuable memories of the years spent within the confines of our beloved Alma Mater-Crawfordsville High School. We are appreciative of the opportunity to serve as editors of our class's yearbook, trusting that we have not been remiss in our duties. To our staff we extend a sincere thank youi' for their hard work and cooperation. Specifically, we would like to express our appreciation to the Howell-Goodwin Printing Company, the Indianapolis Engraving Company, the B. R. Of course, the vacation was the hig thing , hut we enjoyed many festivities. liaeh year our chorus gave us a beautiful concert, hut in 1955 something exrta was added. Strains of familiar Christmas carols were heard in the corridors during elasstime, providing a pleasant distraction from studies. Our serenaders certainly heightened the Christmas spirit. Li hter Side . . . The yell leaders, under the capable coaching of Mrs. Patricia Hendrich, lead the cheering section at the football and basketball games and had charge of the pep sessions. The varsity yell leaders were Wzillziee Kohel, Marilyn McCalment, Carl Knowling, and Nancy Binford lpietured helowb. The B team yell leaders were Susie Cunning- ham, Nancy Hawkins, Dwight Royer, and jack Wfatson. Sis, Boom, Bah ll Hearts and Flowers Another festive time of the year was Valentine's Day. To celebrate this day we had a Val- entine danee where we crowned our King and Queen of Hearts. This was one of the gala events of our year. YN ,yy 1 . in Q fi . . . And Serious Side S5 fjlfl lu! Page F orty-seven Keeping In Step With . . . ACTIVITIES An important phase of school life was the extra-curricular activities which we entered. The new concept of education was that participation in clubs, publications, and hobby groups made a better-rounded student. I No longer did school mean only classrooms and studies. A student who participated in outside activities learned to work with other students toward a common goal, to lead and ro follow. We all agreed that these activities-in moderation-made the journey through high school more of an interesting excursion than a tedious march. ar XM? Ga 17 QD Q Q? Eu? Keeping In Step With USIC Keeping in step with CHS in 1953 was a fairly easy matter when we had such a fine music department to furnish the rhythm. Music was part of our high school life from beginning to endg we en- joyed it at ballgames, concerts, convocations, pep sessions, dances-and how proud we felt-and sad, too-as we listened to the familiar strains of the Gold and Blue at our graduation. ll. . l. ll mf 4 1 v I Y .. . , . , x 1 sw 1 I I 'I gg if 5 Q Q e ,sy I X A- A af. P O R T S Keeping in Step with CHS , the motif of the 1953 ATHENIAN, now enters its final phase with a review of the year's accomplishments in the field of sports. Crawfordsville High School was gifted with a well-rounded pro- gram of athletics which contributed much toward the ultimate goal of a sound mind in a sound body. Win, lose, or draw . . . our Athenian athletes made us proud of them as they engaged in competitions in football, basketball, baseball, track, wrestling, golf, and tennis.
