They have given un- sparingly of their time to improve our high school and provide a fine education for us students. Our faculty is one of the greatest aids in our educational system. They not only teach the pupils as a group but instruct them separately as Well. Much time is spent by our faculty in learning how to make our classes more inter- esting so we will take a greater interest in our school work. He decides to convert a number of old colonial mansions into a chain of Ye Olde Inns. In this he is encouraged by his fiancee. He is energetically denounced by his father. Much interest has been aroused among the students, and many have taken 2 part in at least one of the various organizations of this department. a Mr. Joseph A. Gremelspacher, better known as Joe , has worked tire- i lessly in an effort, not only to make these organizations as nearly perfect as possible, but also to serve the school and the students to the best of Q his ability. Last year his senior orchestra won first place in the district g contest and placed second at the state. The band also did very creditably, -5 winning second in the district and third at the state. Both organizations i competed again this year in the district contest, which was held at our E school, and they expect to go to Evansville to enter the state contest. 2, Donald Ratclii and Albert Canine, members of the band, had the 2 privilege last summer of attending the National Orchestra and Band Camp at Interlochen, Michigan. Donald won first place in the male Vocal contest i and Albert placed third in the tuba contest. i D. . i Senior Band E .. An innovation was made last year when the band played for the commencement exercises. The band is unusually large this year, consisting 5 of sixty-three members, including librarian and drum major. New uni- 2 forms were bought for the band. The new uniforms, dark blue, trimmed in gold, have Sam Browne belts and Pershing hats, the band makes a S striking picture at all the football and basketball games. When Kryl 's E Band presented a concert here last fall, our band was honored by being 2 allowed to play the closing number with his musicians. A band concert B was given February 15, and a large crowd attended. :- The band won the right to enter the state contest when it won second S place in Class B in the district contest. Additional honors were Won i when Carl De Hoff, who leads the band on the march, was awarded the Zi baton presented to the band with the best drum major. The following P- band members won in the solo contests: cornets, Leslie Gilkey, tied for first, trombone, Jack Cunningham, tied for second, French horn, Ernest l i' Edwards, second, tuba, Albert Canine, second, baritone, Fred Cunningham, Q first. The following were permitted to go directly to the state contest, N as they did not have enough competition to make a contest here: basson, ! This group has been organized into an opera club with the following officers: president, John Lenhardt, vice president, Jack Cunningham, secretary, Catherine Davis, librarian, Dorothy Nelson. The chorus has made several appearances in chapel, and one of its best performances was Braddock 's Defeat , a cantata commemorating George Washington. January 27, the chorus presented The Mikado , by W. S. Gilbert and Sir Arthur Sullivan. This is one of the best operas England has ever produced. The exquisite costumes and unusually fine performance of the students pleased a large audience. With a team of veterans, many of whom had served for two and three years, Coach Craver and his assistant, Chuck Henry, journeyed to Camp Crosley for a ten day session of football drills conducted by college coaches of Indiana. Muncie, Shortridge of Indianapolis, 'Warsaw, Rush- ville, Southport, Lebanon, and Crawfordsville made up the camp, and a glimmering of the Athenians' real strength began to show in its ability to outplay other members of the camp. As a climax to the ten day period, Crawfordsville and Muncie, the two strongest teams 'in camp, played a game, consisting of four eight-minute quarters. Muncie held us to a 6 to 6 tie. 1 CRAWFORDSVILLE., 13: THORNT OWN, 0 Flashing unusual power, the Athenians crushed the Thorntown warriors in the iirst game of the season. Controlling the ball throughout the game, the Athenians made thirteen lirst downs to ThorntoWn's two, and were never in danger of being scored upon. During the fourth quarter a strong reserve team held Thorntown scoreless and were within two yards of a touchdown when the gun ended the contest. To Herr went the honor of scoring the first touchdown of the season, but Malaska, with a 58-yard run, was right on his heels. CRAWFORDSVILLE., 20: SI-EELBYVILLE, 0 C With the forward wall tearing great holes in the Shelbyville line and stopping her best efforts to score, the Athenians' midget backheld Wheeled into action and galloped over, through, and around the Shelbyville defenses to the tune of 20 to 0. This was the first night game for the Athenians, but night or day the boys were full of fight and touchdowns. CRAWFORDSVILLE, 0: LEBANON, 6 On a muddy field our old rivals, Lebanon, out-lucked us in a listless battle. An hour late in arriving, a muddy field, and a lack of fight made the game slow throughout. CRAWFORDSVILLE, 13: BRAZIL. 0 Under the lights again on a field as hard as a brick the Athenians took the Red Devils of Brazil for their third win of the year. Playing heads-up ball, and every man doing his part, Crawfordsville held possession of the ball during most of the contest. The touchdowns came as the result of a series of plunges by McCarthy and a pass to Mclntire while Nees, Brazil star, failed to get past the line of scrimmage and often never even reached it. CRAWFORDSVILLE., 12: JEFF, 6 A big, hard playing team from Jeff of Lafayette furnished the opposi- tion for Homecoming and threw quite a scare into the Athenian camp, when blocking a punt then recovering to score and tie the count of 6 to 6. Backs against the wall, the Athenians showed their quality by fighting the Jeff team off its feet. Again the line came through, and the backs crossed that last white line for victory. CRAWFORDSVILLE. 7: MONTICELLO, 0 In a hard fought battle the Athenians barely eked out a 7 to 0 decision from Monticello. The game was rough throughout and a player on both teams was banished from the game. Crawfordsvi1le's score came after a bad punt was caught by Malaska onthe 31-yard line and returned nineteen yards to the twelve-yard line. Two more runs and the ball was pushed over on a sneak by Malaska. The pass for extra point was good. CRAWFORDSVILLE, 45: ATTICA, 7 An intercepted pass by Malaska, a blocked punt by Tompkins, and a plunge by Herr led to three touchdowns and rout for Attica. Plays clicking like clock work, the Athenians marched from one end of the field to the other, and the only time Attica furnished opposition was when a team of seconds and third string men was scored upon near the end of the first half. Coach Craver experimented with various combinations and much strong reserve material was discovered. CRAWFORDSVILLE., l4: PERU, 6 In the feature game of the year Crawfordsville defeated the Peru Tigers in a charity game held at Ingalls field. A blocked punt by Kalweit, three plays after the kickoff, turned into a touchdown after its recovery on the seven-yard line, while an end run by Fishero in the second quarter accounted for the second Athenian score. A deluge of passes launched by Peru during the second half, accounted for their lone touchdown in the fourth quarter, but they failed to convert the extra point. Both Crawfordsville's passes for extra point were good. Captains Kalweit and Tompkins, Osborne and Slater shared honors in the line, while Fishero, senior halfback and McCarthy, sophomore full, carried the brunt of the Athenian attack. C Men Doc BEESON-A senior playing his first year as a regular turned in a fine performance at quarter, and his excellent passing accounted for those, sometimes much needed, extra points. HERB DUKES-A junior also playing his first year as a regular on the right end of the forward wall. To Dukes goes the honor of scoring eight of thirteen extra points after touchdown, and a man to round his end, had to carry plenty of horseshoes, rabbit feet, and four leaf clovers. ED. BAYLESS-A hundred and sixty-five pound tackle playing his Hrst year on the varsity, who made it plenty tough for opposing ends. Bayless has one more year, and, with a little more experience, will be heard of in high school football circles. JOHN MCINTIRE-ADOthBP wingman who has the grabbing habit. John snared his share of passes this season and crossed that old goal line against Brazil after snaring a pretty pass from Beeson, to climax as good an exhibition of ballplaying as could be wanted. HARRY RUTLEDGE-JuSt a sophomore and plenty cocky, but a nice ball player. Small and fast-he is a good blocker and, as to backing up the line, he 's always where he 's needed. JOE MATRICIA-A junior who won his letter this year and has another year to go. Joe stuck in there at guard when the going was tough and seldom did he fail to have a hand on the runner when an opponent tested our line. Watch the fireworks at guard next yea.r for Joe will be right in there showing them how it 's done. - . LEO NICCARTHY-AHOth6F sophomore but more than that, an Irishman. Leo, playing his second year at varsityfullback, wrecked more hopes for opponents than they desired. A ripping, slashing, plunger, a hard hitting blocker, and a damaging tackler, no better fullback could be desired, Two more years to come, L-eo will really show his stuff. PAT MALASKA-Small, fast, and shifty, no better halfback to be desired. Playing his second year at right half and behind a strong line, Pat was in his glory, and few were the opponents able to stop him in the open. Pat has one more year and along with the rest is going to help put Crawfordsville on the football map. GENE FISHERO-Only a hundred and forty-five pounds of dynamite but under perfect control. He is a good plunger and tackle but excels at blocking. Gene made those ends behave and opened the way for the runner. As a climax to his football career, Gene played his greatest game against Peru. REMLEY HERR1A versatile player atehome in the line or backfield. Herr was a mainstay in Coach Craver's football machinery. Being a junior and possessing two years' experience he should do great things next year. LLOYD ARMSTRONG-The big boy-of the Athenian line, Army was hard to move, and when a play came' through, well it just didn't. As he was fast on his feet and had one year's experience Army played good ball throughout the season. GIB HOWELL-A senior playing his second year at tackle. Gib took care of his position in good style. He was a hard fighter, but he was handicapped by injuries part of the season but played good ball in all the games. HARJOE OSBORNE-One of the hardest driving players on the Athenian squad. Osborne held down right guard for his second year of varsity competition. He is an excellent blocker and a hard, aggressive player. Osborne always had a hand in the play and as for taking out fullbacks-well, he can't be beaten. Art has served for four years under Coach Craver and won his letter three. ED TOMPKINS-Right tackle and co-captain of this year's team. Ed held up his side of the job at tackle, and, while not big as tackles go, gave many a team trouble by his aggressiveness and fight. Four years' service in which he played Varsity tackle for three years helped him in the best season of his football career. Recognition As a climax to the successful season Dale Miller, in his All-State Prep School selections, honored two Athenian players. Honorable mention was given to Pat Malaska, junior, playing right halfback and Ed Tompkins, senior, playing right tackle.
