You could have found Joseph A. Gremelspacher at the High School building any hour of the day or night-always working. But look at the results, a real Music Department. Last year the orchestra, under his direction, won first place in the district contest and received third place at the State. The orchestra, glee club, and band have made many formal appearances and at each were received with much enthusiasm. Mr. Gremelspacher expects to take several members of the orchestra to Des Moines, Iowa, to attend a Mid-Western or- chestra composed of about three hundred members. He is also planning to take the orchestra to the district contest this year. , Senior Band ' The band, clad in the familiar blue and gold uniforms, certainly created a lot of atmosphere, especially at the ball gamesf When the band begins to play those stirring marches and good old C. H, S. songs, everyone can ,feel how much enthusiasm really exists. Bill Jones is that snappy drum major! Senior Orchestra V 7 1 The members of the senior orchestra have spent many-painful hours merely learning to tune their instrument and, most of all, to be patient. The or- chestra is composed of forty-five members, all of whom know 'the difference be- tween B sharp and C Hat. They are musicians who have studiedeextensively on their respective instruments and have had previous experience in orchestral work. Mary Avalyn Davis has been concert mistress for three years and is also student director Other member of the orchestra have been given the opportun ity to learn the art of directing Page Fifty three IllllllllIlllllIllllfllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllUWM lllIllIIIllIlllllllllIIIlllllIlllllllllllllllllll - . . . . . l - - V ,-,-.., , ,w,-,....- .,- .... .. ,,,.,, ,.,.,Y.---nw,-. r-N,-,--,W---ff' . Crecelius was appointed assistant coach in football. Mr. Crecelius attended E Camp Crosley last summer with the squad and has long been interested in i E sports. Mr. Crecelius proved a great help to Mr. Craverllast fall and it is -V fi hoped he will again be with the team next year. - F E Charles B. Young was appointed athletic manager to succeed Mr. Freeman, E E who was chosen principal. Mr. Young has been a member of thefaculty for 2 2 the past two years and has taken an active interest in sports. His efficiency 2 . as business manager was shown by his success this year. Q -i Nolan C. Craver continued his duties as coach. Mr. Craver completed his if 3 fourth year this spring. He especially deserves credit for his efforts in pro- Q fi moting sports among the grade schools. Coach Craver led the Athenians 5 E through the season with but three defeats. H -4 'i l' '- Football i .1 2 Coach Nolan C. Craver and Assistant Coach Owen L. Crecelius had their 2 share of bad luck with the Athenian football team this year. ' ' 1' 1 Numerous injuries kept the first string players out of many games. In ..-- fact there was no single game in which all the first eleven was presentf How- ever, the Athenians made a creditable showing in spite of their bad luck. Coaches Craver and Crecelius had practically green material to work with as many were lost last year by graduation. With ten days training at Camp Crosley under expert supervision, the team was finally moulded into a smoothly working machine. Twenty-two fellows from Crawfordsville attended Camn Crosley last fall. Many strong high school teams from central' Indiana attended Page Sixty-three 1 L Il l Illlilililililil lilililililil ililililil ll1lli!ilill'1lililililililililiilil lililililililililillllliliIllill WF? 1 il lililllllllllililililililililililililililfH I llllilililllllil llllllllililllilililllilllil' l g qi 11 1 59 E 2 L- 5 -2 3' L- IC .- IS -. an .- L! .C ..- ZS ,... .C ,.... .1 zu TC .1 ...- .1 ,- .1 .- 1 ...- 1 1 7.- . 1 T .C C F. .C ... ' The Athenians reached the climax of their season in the home-coming game with Greencastle, which they won 9 to 0. The following men made up the first squad: Ends, Thompson and Middle- ton, tackles, Howell and Osborne, guards, Armstrong, Herr and Atkinson, centers, Kalweit, Tompkins and Coonsg quarterback, Foster, halfbacks, Fishero, Malaska, Tomlinson, Day and Vance 5 fullback, McCarthy. The following probably will make up next year's squad. These men also saw action this year: Howell, Armstrong, Osborne, Fishero, Malaska, McCarthy, Beeson, Herr, Matricia, Dukes, Miller, Coons, Bayless, Ratcliff, Noonan and Binford. Next year's football schedule follows: September 11-Thorntown, here. October 14-Monticello, there. September'19-Shelbyville, there. October 23-Attica, here. September 25-Lebanon, here. October 30-Greencastle, there. OCtObeI' 2 OI' 3-Brazil, there. November 6-Peru, here, October 10-Jeff Cllafayettej, here. , Peru will be the only new opponent while Monticello, who was played two years ago, again will be played. All home games will take place in the after- noon as the night plant, at Wabash College will be abandoned. Basketball The Athenian Midgets came through their regular season schedule with colors flying as they lost but three of their games. VVith victories over Jefferson Cliafayettej, Tipton and Lebanon, the Athenians placed themselves on many sports writers big tens. Coach Craver lostthree regulars last year but had good material to build on this year. Thompson, center, Freeman and Dickerson, forwards, Malaska and Johnson, guards, made up the first five. The rest of the squad included: Stump, Dukes, Fishero, McCarthy, Hightower, Breaks, Jones, Hultz, Hedge. and Tompkins. The Athenians lost their first game of the season to Shelbyville. With the stage fright worn off, however, the Midgets came back and lost but two more, one-to Brazil and the other to Greencastle, state finalists. The College Town Tourney, held at Lafayette, proved to be another backset for the Athenians. Crawfordsville dropped their first game to Greencastle, but came back to beat Bloomington in the consolation game, J ei won the tourney from Greencastle with a double overtime tilt. The sectional was thought to be a setup for the Cravermen, but Wingate 's snipeshooters proved too much. The Athenians had won from Wingate earlier in the season, but lacked the necessary punch in the sectional. TheiMidgets were critized as usual before the sectional as they played all their home games on the Wabash floor. Crawfordsville has failed to place themselves on a par with other schools of its size as it has no gym. Mr. Craver deserves credit for his success under such handicaps Page Sixty four -1 - ..,, I. Its a long hard road but its worth it. When you're a Senior you can look back over your years of study and feel proud or sorry, as the case may be. The Junior. High under the leadership of Mr. James and their faculty have accomplished much this year. Their chapels, under the guidance of the newly formed Junior National Honor Sooiety, have been very entertaining. If the Junior High School pupils keep on with their good work they will soon be high and mighty Seniors. 1 .---n Page Seventy-seven D, I' Il at-5 I IllIlliliIIlilililiIilillIilllil ilililiiililili Iilillmlili IlililiIiliIilililililiiililililililllllillllllll Thelma Aliluott, Ruth Aber, Beulah Alexander, Julia Alexander, Vivian Armstrong, Irvin Arnold, Thelma Atkinson, Mildred Baker, T. The society has arranged anzl given all Junior High School programs. The officers. are: Rosc- mary O'Nca1l, President, Catherine Davis, Vice-President, Betty Johnson, Sec- retary, Vllilliam Leavenworth, Treasurer. The sponsors are: Mr. Stout, Miss Lee, Miss Wilkinson, Mr. Sullivan. ' Junior Music Department . ' Miss Porter and Mr. Munger are the heads of the Junior Music Department. Miss Porter has held this position for many years and we hope that she will have it many more years, because we really have an excellent Junior'Music Department. She directs the Junior Girls' Glee Club and the Junior Mixed Chorus, which are separate organizations. Mary Elizabeth Goodbar is the ac- companist for the Mixed Chorus, and.Mary Katherine Troutis the accompanist for the Girls' Glee Club. The latter organization has already proved its super- iority by, two concerts, one was given at the Orchestra Concert, and the other was broadcasted over the radio. The Junior Music Department is planning a Junior Music program for May the eighth. This is an annual program and was begun last year. There will be solos by members of the Junior High School and selections by the.Band, Orchestra, and Glee Clubs. . Mr. Munger, a new member of our faculty, directs the instrumental work of the Junior Music Department. On the warmer days you can hear the Junior Band parading in the court in back of the building. It has always been a mystery to us that a band member can play his horn and keep step at the same time. They say it is quite a simple trick, with a little practice, but we still wonder how they can keep their feet and fingers from getting mixed up. The Orchestra and Band are planning some very stirring music for the Junior Music program. Among the numbers they are to 'play is the King Lear Overture fwe hope this music story will not be as tragic as the or1 mall The Junior Music Organizations are really the workshops for the senior organizations The members develop technique and gain experience Page Eighty three Illlllilil lllililililllllll lli lllilililllllilllllW1lilililiIililililililllililililililililiIllllllllllIII 'l'oP: Junior National Honor Soviefy. l'r:N'rif:ic: Junior High School Hand. lio'1 1'oM: Junior' High School O1'c'hcsti'z1.
