Traditional Vioforg When sport historians look back at the 1987 Homecoming game, they might refer .to it as The Mud Bowl of '87. A full week of rain, combined with the less than perfect Patrick Henry field resulted in a dirty, slippery mud bath for the Colts and their op- ponents, the Cardinals of Hoover High. With the conditions being what they were, it was no surprise that the game was tainted by eight fumbles, three of them by the Colts. However, despite the dif- ficulty of using a rubber football instead of the usual leather, quarterback Keith Gilbert delivered another league leading performance, highlighted by a 10 yard touchdown pass to James Gordon, who finished the night with 7 receptions for 83 yards. In a questionable strategic move, Hoover opted to kick off again in the second half, after deferring in the first half. The Colts took the opening kick and march- ed down the field for six points. The drive was capped by a 10 yard touchdown run by Sean Mitchell. The Crawford defense was denied a shutout with a 1 yard touchdown run by Hoover with less than two minutes remaining in the game.
