In recent years juniors knew him as the home- room teacher in 214. Many more students, of course, will remember him as their English teacher. And some will prob- ably reliect how much better he deserved of them than they gave him. For he always wanted to give them the best he had. 4 To yoii, Mr. Hayes, do we of the clan of 1952 dedicate thi: yearbook in apprecia- tion of your work as biology teacher and Director of Audio-Visual Aids. For more than twenty years you have been helping Cranston students to learn something of biology, with all its intricacies of frogs and crawfish fresh out of formaldehyde. Your unceasing Work in audio- and visual-aids has made many as- semblies and other programs function smoothly and enjoyably, and contributed val- uably to instruction in many a class. Besides these time-consuming duties, you also for years supervised the refreshment concession at the Cranston stadium, and you still carry a heavy responsibility as custodian of the band uniforms, and in keeping track of equipment during public appearances of the band. In acknowledgment of these many and varied contributions to Cranston High School, it is with gratitude and admiration that we dedicate this Cranstonian to you, Mr. Hayes. Office upon office has been bestowed upon her and she has successfully filled them all. Despite her activeness in extra-curricular activities she maintained a high scholastic average. Pleasant 6 FOOTBALL Even with a team stacked with veterans, the football team could place no better than a tie for sec- ond, in the Class A competition. Starting the season with a vic- tory over Gorton in the Round Robin, the team played a scoreless tie with Lockwood and defeated Fitchburg, Mass. in two exhibitions that were both thrillers. Joe sms PAPPY With three straight victories to start off the league competition, the grid men were beaten by a highly aroused Hope team. Following this de- feat, the team was nosed out in a see-saw battle with LaSalle by the score of 14 to 12, after a back-in-motion penalty had cost Cranston a touchdown. Although the team lost only..these two games, they were enough to keep it out of the league lead. Led in these early victories' by Captain Rocco Lancia, the team was severely handicapped when he was injured in the third league game and remained out of action for the rest of the season. CAPT. ROCCO LANCIA Joe Mancini, said to be one of the Hnest fullbacks seen at Cranston, will be back again next year and is sure to be a PRACTICE mainstay of the team. Many of his passes connected with the arms of Ray Rowles and Ricky Webb for scores, and his running ability stunned his opposition. Ed Alves, who was voted a place on the All State second team, and a guard on the All Class A first team, was very apt at recovering fumbles, and he broke through to stop many a play with a loss of yardage. We hope the boys will make the top rung of the league ladder next year! 93 MA JORETTES First Row: J. Gushue, Headg K. Ericksong C. Shogreng P. Schallerg D. Stevensg D. Rossg B. Chaseg J. DeVonag J. Because of this f1ne record of victories, the team was able to walk away with the league title. One of the reasons for the team's gr' string of victories is the time and eff- that the coach and the boys have put ir their practice sessions, and another is t strong support of the student body. 'I continuously devoted turnout of I wrestlers' classmates spurred the team its great achievements. E A-Q .- ,. twvx-,-Jfawi-g The team's sportsmanship was lauded wherever they happened to compete, whether on the home court or away. They were a true credit to the standards of our school. Each a standout in his own class, the three veterans, Norm Machon, Ed Alves, and Eric Stutz, proved reliable when it came to getting needed points, while the first year men often surprised their overconfident, seasoned opponents by defeating and even pinning many of them. Their able coach, Haig Varadian, has en- -tered the entire first team in the New Eng- land Championship meet and is hoping that the boys will come through in these matches as they did in the regular season competi- tion. After competing .in this meet, the team will wrestle in the State Finals. In the New England Championship Meet with sixteen schools from six states com- peting, Cranston wrestlers placed twelfth. Three members of the team went as far as the semi-finals, and two of them, Eric Stutz and Dick Palumbo, placed on the third team of their class.
