Carpenter last August, Cranston High School lost a capable teacher and a sympathetic friend who had served the school long and well. For many years she was head ot the Englisn Department, an inspiration to all the students and teachers who came in contact with her. It was under her leadership that our yearbook was de- veloped and the Cranston Women Teachers' Association was tounded. She started Student Government in Cranston when no other high school in the state had adopted it, and to the students of later years she was best known as the founder and supervisor ot the well-equipped school library. Such valuable achievements as these, and her memorable personal quali- ties-her cordiality, her humor, her knowledge, and her deep under- standing-endear Miss Carpenters name to everyone who knew her. -4- Foreword AR HAS ALWAYS been the disrupter of the little activities which are an integral and cherished part of life in peacetime. Because of World conditions, this is to be the last CRANSTONIAN for the duration. Though We on the Board have had to cope with short- ages of material and restrictions on time, We have tried to make this book a memorable record of a memorable year. +56 CRANSTON IN THE SERVICE MARINE CORPS VAN BOGAROUS QB DON ALO ROY 3A com QUARD JACK BAYNE5 nb HOWEU. THYRSUS CLUB The Thyrsus Club, under the able and professional direction of Miss Kathleen E. Torsey, has produced three plays this year. A Miracle for Mary Was the pageant presented at the annual Christmas assembly, which has become a tradition in the school program. Barbara Arnold was the statue of the Virgin that came to life, and lack Tillman, Barbara Davis, Bernard Boyer, and Helen-Mary Cannon were also members of the cast. Next came the P.T.A. comedy Are We Dressing?, featuring Donald Parks and Virginia Crawford. The most important and most anticipated production was the annual spring play, this year The Youngest by Philip Barry, with lack Tillman in the title role, and Virginia Crawford, Russell Crosby, Donald Parks, Lois Arnold, George Collins, Barbara Davis, Barbara Arnold, and Naomi Sisson as other players. The senior play, also directed by Miss Torsey, was a modern comedy Every Family Has One, received hilariously by the audience. The cast in- cluded Virginia Crawford, Stafford Wilbur, Ann Gerety, Richard Nason, Don- ald Parks, Helen-Mary Cannon, Katherine Sandberg, Barbara Whipple, Nor- man Ierome, Beverly Lippold, and Anne I-liggins. -53- ff ,W . ,f LATIN CLUB Back row: Parks, Gannon, Patterson. The boys had a number ot handicaps to overcome, but came' through the season with a good record. Most of the games were an even, hardffought draw to the linish when one team would finally pull through. Our boys showed fine sportsmanship and clean playing at all times. Especially noteworthy among our best players were two All State linemen, George Matthews and Thomas Meschino. Most of the fellows will be back next fall to form the nucleus ot another Green Thunderbolt. G e o r g e Mat- thews, guard - All State First Team. No practice ice, few turnouts, and few seasoned players promised little for the Thunderbolt skaters. When they did get going, however, the boys were right up with the leaders, and missed the playoffs by the narrowest of margins in an overtime game with Hope. Clean, rugged hockey characterized our team, and their fine sportsmanship and self-control made them a credit to the school. After a month of hard practice, our team defeated one opponent after another, and ended up in the state playoffs. The boys trounced a much accredited Pawtucket West team, and then bowed to La Salle in one of the most thrilling games of the tournament. 1t was in this game that luni Galli ran rings around his much bigger opponents. We will be talking of the fine playing of Tiedge, Potter, Thayer, Cooney, Mattera, Rose, and our ace, Iohn Tierney, for a long time to come.
