Our life at Cranston High School has been founded upon these princi- ples of democratic government and has been a training for the future citizens of our great and prospering republic. We, the editors of the 1941 Cranstonian, hope that in future years our' Work will help recall the democratic ideals instituted into Cranston High School's curricular and extra-curricular activities, athletics, and student government. Our hope is that high schools like ours may continue to flourish, for democracy's only hope is in tomorrow's citizen, and tomorroW's American citizen is being educated in American high schools-of which ours is typical. .-4.- C. Thus even the humblest is given equal opportun- ity with his higher-ranking fellow men. ln the American high school, each student is classed, not according to prejudices, but according to his intel- ligence, his ability as a leader, his character, and other evidences of his good citizenship. Beginning here at Cranston as a lowly Sophomore, one may advance him- self by effort and perseverance through a Well balanced curriculum of required and elective courses to the rank of Iunior and then to the exalted rank of Senior, finally attaining his ultimate goal of graduation. Throughout his course, each has the right of representation in the student council and the right to choose home-room, class, and student council officers, and each class has its share of school officers. Thus the most obscure Sophomore can make himself at graduation the school's most distinguished citizen. if , H. l f ' . .'.1ltt1x-.-XF l mm nm l I 1 mammal 11,3 ft. wx sf fx, nlmnn, ' 9 F , . ll IL 2-T'-ff - - 4 V Y-- - i ux- of :-1: T yi-lf: jfs- .,?v ., .1 i Zn ............l -3- The State Capitol. home oi Rhode Islcmd's representative government LASSES ,QW Lucille Abramson Rolvin P. So it is in the American high school. Our own Cranston I-ligh School is noted for its Wide range of extra- curricular activities. A student interested in a language, whether it be German or Greek, Italian or French, Spanish or Latin, can find a club which he may join and Where he may spend his after school hours. Or if he is interested in sciences, he may join one ot the science clubs, which carry on experiments prescribed, not by a dictatorial government head, but by the members of the club. Per- haps he is interested in physical recreation. Then he may join the Hi-Y or I-Ii-Tri, Leader Corps, or some other athletic club. The Thyrsus Club is comprised of a group of students interested either in the acting or the staging of plays. The club not only puts on plays for the enjoyment of the students, their friends, and their parents, but it also sends its members to see plays put on by college groups or professional actors. With the proceeds from the plays the club buys many things necessary for the better production of future plays and helps improve the auditorium. In the past the Thyrsus Club has spent several hundred dollars on the stage lighting system, has had installed a new pulley system for the curtains, and every year has given a Christmas party, Santa Claus included, for the whole school. This year the club presented Peace I Give Unto You for its Christmas play. In March Gadgets was given at a meeting of the ParentfTeacher Association and at North Providence High School in the play contest. Through the Night was chosen for the annual spring play. IN APPRECIATION T HE members of the Cranston High School Parent Teacher Association are very grateful for the kindness and cofoperation of our Principal, Mr. C. Herbert Taylor, the faculty of the school, and to Mr. Silas T. Nye, Principal of William A. Briggs. We consider it a pleasure to have him with us as a member of our board. Again this year our unit has the highest membership in the State, the total at present being S 18. Great credit goes to the Membership Chairman and her Committee and the students who helped so willingly. The outstanding meetings of our 1940 and 1941 programs have been Fathers' Night, with Mr. Taylor acting as President, the Christmas Party with Santa himself as host, and the Thyrsus Club play Gadgets , given at our March meeting. Thanks go to Miss Helen jones and Miss Anne Newdick and the entire cast. In April Miss Ruth Cowles, our own Home Economics teacher, prepared and arranged a program called The Home Makers Conference which we feel was outstanding. Many thanks are due the girls of these classes and to Miss Ruth Cowles. Thanks are also due Miss Anna Mclnerney for the musical talent furnished at some of our meetings. It is always a pleasure to hear Mr. Alfred P. Zambarano play and discuss musical instniments, and with this program we close a successful year. Our unit also enjoys having our Superintendent, Mr. Clarence W. Bosworth, with us at all meetings. To my Committee serving with me, may I say I have enjoyed working with you. To make our unit a perfect one requires time, patience, and combined effort and all members have contributed. To the graduating class of 1941 the Cranston High School Parent Teacher Association extends congratulations and closes with this message: The desire to serve is not enough, we must acquire the knowledge of how to serve and to train ourselves in the wisdom of service. Whether on the football gridiron, the basketball court, the hockey rink, the baseball diamond, or any other field of competition, each athlete learns that no team can be a success without cooperation. While our boys in green and White this year won state champion- ships in two major sports-football and hockey-the other teams should not be considered unsuccessful, for they Were taught a principle which will stand them in good stead all their lives as American citizens, the necessity of Working together for a common cause. if ET? , if sf 5 .5 Z-KS 1 Sf :ami fig 1 . -fir CX . Losing only four of its scheduled fourteen games, the Green Thunderbolt piled up a thirtyffour point total against twentyfseven for its opponents. Two of the team's outstanding players were named to AllfState sextets: Ray Ashcroft, the best puck carrier in the league, and George Pulliam, a sterling, rough and tough defenseman.
