'Glyn Spnilrgltt l ago Six Qtatnrg nf 31 ,rw ANY many years ago-well not so many at that to be specxflc four years ago a little ,. group of grammar school refugees sought shelter and vuldance ln the arms of Cranford ,., Hlgh School By popular approval the group dec1ded they needed some one who could ably dlrect thexr actxvxtxes and so elected Brlhe Crane to be thexr worthy pres1dent K4 Inspxred by the examples set for them by upper classmen they set out on buslness of Q thelr own To keep an authentlc record of thexr actxvxtles they dec1ded a secretary was wantmg and Gladys Lmdquxst was gxven this posltxon Money an eternal problem entered 1nto the l1ves of these strugglxng chaldren and Lawrence Hllyard s abihty to keep accounts stralght proved very helpful Wlth such an amb1t1ous group to dlrect the pres1dent very gladly accepted the asslstance of Murxel Battey as v1ce pres1dent The dally monotony of finding the correct numbers to the rocms m whlch thelr classes were held was relleved by a bus tr1p to the Metropolltan Museum of Art Later 1n the year when they became accustomed to the general run of thlngs thelr pedagogues dec1ded that a l1ttle DICDIC ln some quiet spot would be qulte restful to thexr weary brams There were many weary feet however when the group returned from Echo Lake Durlng the summer some of the group lost hope of succeedlng 1n thexr courses but the maJorlty of them returned There were many new recruits from Garwood to JOIH the ranks They fell 1n very readlly New people had dlsplayed thexr talents and so were elected to the following offices Samuel Wlkander pres1dent B1ll1e Crane vxce pres1dent Lawrence Hxlyard treasurer Barbara Voyer secretary Alorv w1th JO1I'l1I'1g the ranks of upper classmen they Jomed the el1te by successfully putting over the first Sophomore act1v1ty a brxdge party In thelr Junxor year Wxlbur Talbot headed the group as presxdent w1th Jane Housum ably assxstxng as v1ce presxdent Lawrence Hllyard st1ll contmued to hold the purse whxle Charlotte Bartels kept the records stralght In the annual Junlor Senxor Debate the class of 31 dlsplayed thelr ablhty at argumg and won the cherxshed cup presented by the Cleveland Parent Teachers Assoclatlon One of the most successful feats of the year was the annual Junlor Subscrlpt on Dance a profitable venture for the first txme IH the hlstory of C H S Toward the close of the school term some of the students of the Engllsh department wandered over to New York to s e Journeys End To close a most mter estlng year the Juniors asslsted ln maklng a success of the Junior Senior Prom As polrshed expenenced Senxors the group attacked more serxous and dxffin ult proyects Thomas Lxnnenbrlnk the Semor pres dent steered the class through a very trylng year Roselyn Specht served the term as vlce pres1dent Lawrence Hllyard argam as treasurer and Paulme Stanley filled the offlce of secretary The greatest accompllshment was the Semor play entitled The Youngest Stlll retalnmg thelr vworous att1tude ln debatlng they agam won the Jumor Senlor Debate Those who had particr pated IH the Senlor play or debatmg were glven complxmentary tlckets to the Mask and W1 productlon East Lynne Gone West So ended the educatxon 193 of the class of 31 and may all wlse underclassmen follow ln thelr footsteps 1' h - L 1. 1 . , Ala ' - ggykf Y 1 , 1 .4F'ftTZ-4 v ' ' Ale JQZRW..
