Page Thirty Nlne I had my doubts as to whether or not he was the cne you wanted But from the lxttle I could find out from the villagers and from the description you had given me he proved to be the one I wanted The odd thmg about lt was that he was 1lV1!1U all these years so close to you without your knowing anything at all about hrs bemv there Posing as a business acquaintance I mqulred at his home I found he had come to this c1ty and was staying at the German Gardens I came back and yesterday I saw him On the pretext that he was an old friend of mine I approached and spoke to him Naturally I apologized for my supposedly foohsh mlstake Now in Rosetown I had discovered that he went ln deeply for antiques so I let drop a word or two that the cause for my having to meet my awaited friend was about the sale of some ant1ques He immediately became mterested saying that he also kept a lookout for antxques OLD MAN rln suspense! Humph' Did you get h1m to come here'P CLoAxr:n FIGURE We began talking about c rtaln famous antiques and casually I mentioned this shop as a place to obtaxn some magnificent articles Then as my friend hadnt appeared I said that Id leave He asked me where this shop was so I promised to bring hlm here tonight at 8 30 exactly one hour from now You ve heard the whole story now Does it satisfy you? Good by' Ill be here at 8 30 sharp fSl1pS mto fog and is oon lost to view The old man zmmedzately goes to rear room After a moment or two of heavy breathing and scraping he returns carrymg a heavy obyect that he can scarcely hold He places it on the workbench He mutters to htmself and smzles smuglyj So he IS interested ln antlques is he? Well Ill show hxm thls one and a few others llke xt Wont he l1ke them? I-Ia' I-Ia' Imported dlrect from Spam they are Stlll ln good working order too Just need a httle oil lHe takes ozl can from workbench and applzes the ozli Hmm' I guess thxs IS where the thumbs are placed and th1s is the wheel I tum then he shrleks ha' ha' The cellar ll be about the best place in wh1ch to conduct the operations Ill have to get the other machines down before they get here Thlsll be a nice joke on hxm Ha' ha' ha' Be good to see him after all these years fSuddenly he stares at curtazns opposzte htm and h1s face tzghtens Hts Lowe turns bztterj Yes Robert Maynard It w1ll be good to see you after all these years Thought youd gotten rld of me eh'P Well I came back to get my revenge fVozce rtsesl Shanghai me wxll you? Hurry' Ive got some lmportant news for you fStops agazn he zs puzzled by the silence looks about the room and enters partztzon suddenly sees the figure of the old man and rushes to htm shoutzngj Whats the matter? rObta1n1ng no answer he hurrzedly bends down to ltsten for heartbeats Then he rzses slowly muttermg to hzmselfl Its blasted queer first Maynard up and gets killed by a wlld hansom cab Now the old man IS gone Something odd about it all fSl0wly he retraces hzs steps on hzs way out he blows out the lamp then he goes out in the fog closzng the door slowly behmd htm and zs soon lost zn the mzst The drtp drzp d rp from the roof top 18 stall audzble from the outstde of the shop and mszde the tzck tock tzck tock goes on but the lzght the dam lzght zs out and darkness cov rs the shop Curtam U . . - - A l . . . . . S C E N E I K HE scene opens on a foggy nzght The famt glrmmer of a shop lamp yuts out from the p x W znterzor of a Shop and rs swallowed by the fog and mzst Musty panes make up the shop front and through them can be seen dusty antzques A blur comes znto the dzm lrght and slowly takes the shape of a man,-a man covered by a cloak that envelops hzm completely He moves nozselessly towards the door of the shop and knocks slowly but heavzly upon zt A few moments of szlence pass then the door slowly draws back on zts hznges The cloaked figure sluies from the fog to the znterzor of the shop and quzckly passes to :ts dzm rear The shop has two counters placed on ezther szde of the room On them are pla ed assort ments of antzques In the rear rzght a workbench s partztzoned from the rest of the shop by curtams shabby and unclean On the workbench are a few tools and vzses Towards the left of thrs workbench zs a door leading to an znner room On the counter nearest the workbench ts an ancient ozl lamp Placed close by zs an equally anczent clock It ts thas clock we hear tzckzng as we s e shufflmg towards the cloaked stranger who had gone towards the workbench the bent figure of an old man Though attzred zn a pazr of shaoby trousers a well worn vest and a pazr of anczent shoes there zs a certarn neatness about htm that betrays the fact of hzs havzng been m better circumstances at some tzme zn the past Apprcachzng the rntruder he questzons htm n an anxzous voice Well what brmas you here tomght CLOAKED FIGURE I need some money OLD MAN fExplodmg! You you found Maynard? !Gwes a gasp and clutches hrs heart! O h' fSzts down heavzly as cloaked figure comes to hzs azd Old Man breathes heamly for a few moments then speaks!
