just like a paperback novel, the kind the drugstores sell when you reach the part where the heartaches come, the hero will be me; but heroes often fail, and you won't read that book again because the ending's just too hard to take; but stories often end and if you read between the lines you'll know that i'm just tryin' to understand the feelin's that you lack. i never thought that i could feel this way and i've got to say that i just don't get it i don't know where we went wrong but the feelin's gone, and i just can't get it back. ---g or don lightfoot 4 7 - 15 Contents Page 20 Initiation 22 Football 30 Senior Play 34 Basketball 38 Volleyball 46 Junior Play 50 Track 58 Graduation 68 Academic 84 Classes 98 Advertising CRANE UNION HIGH SCHOOL CRANE, OREGON 97732 17 Student Council Elected representatives from each class and the student officers elected by the student body met at 7:45 AM to discuss items of student interest and involvement. Initiation The moment every freshman has eagerly awaited. The great event took place on September 29, 1970, As if that was not enough, the freshmen asked to be sold as slaves and donated all the money to the senior class. (Not pictured, Cornelius Johnson. ) The Crane Varsity Basketball squad compiled a 12 win 9 loss record for the 1970-71 season. Lead by the scoring efforts of Elijah Massey (21 points per game) and the superb rebounding by Joe Droege (26 per game), the Mustangs went over the century mark twice and ended the season one win short of going to the regional tournament in Baker, Oregon. Eli Massey was chosen for the first string all star team in our league and also the most valuable player in the school. For some reason Joe Droege, our most outstanding player, did not make this honor although he was highest in rebounds and third in scoring. The J. V. team coached excellently by Warren Martin, placed second in the league with a 9 win 7 loss record. Led by the playmaking of Brett Dunn and the great rebounding and scoring power of Ray Parker and David Hite the boys walked over some of the better schools in the league. Backed by the harassment of Stub Travis and Johnny Miller, known for their defense, the team was also thought of as a good defensive club. Crane's Freshman team had an unlucky year with a 3 win and 9 loss record. Although many of the boys on this team had never played basketball before, they all worked hard and at the end of the season they nearly crossed the 100 mark as they walked over Jordan Valley 96-19. This year, un- like any other, the pep club members had to earn their membership by points. They received points for making signs, serving the visiting teams, and yelling at games. Honor Society SPRING The Sky's the Limit The Junior play, in spite of the short practice time and the practice sessions missed, was held in the multi-purpose room on April 29. This play was an especially interesting one, as well as surprising. The most surprising thing about it was the ending added by Mark Dunn; his new twist even surprised the other actors. In the cast were: Mark Dunn, Novell Bleuler, Joanie Davies, Coni Armstrong, Lloyd Mulholland, Anne Sherburn, Mike Thorne, Shirley Smith, Dave Berrington, Dick Wilson, Debbie Neff, and Vicky Shelley. We sincerely hope that your experience in Crane Union High School has provided the preparation and determination to think and act for yourself in meeting the social, economic, and political problems of your generation. May you have the sincerety to keep physically, mentally, and morally fit to provide the leadership necessary in your generation. May you accept these obligations with sincerity and courage, based on the divine guidance inherent in all of us.
