Their duty is to train students in such a way that they will he ol great value to the war effort and will he hetter trained for a post-war joh. Our future hom- hardiers. navigators and pilots, must have a good foundation ill mathematics to he ahle to cope with thc advanced math courses they will meet in the Air Corps training. At Crane, a new division ol' the mathematics department was recently formed -- a pre-flight course, with Miss Regina Devine as instructor. The purpose of this course is to prepare students for advanced work in aeronautics. The regular mathematics course for non- languagc students requires Algebra l, 2 and 3 and Geometry l. 2 and 3. Trigonometry and a college survey course are offered to the am- hitious Craneite as advanced work. The language students are only required to take one year ol algebra and one year of geometry. However. it is to their advantage to take Algehra 3 and Solid Geometry also. Four semesters of essential mathematics are required of students who are taking the Smith- Hughes Course. ENGLISH DEPARTMEN f At first glanee the work of the English department may not seem important to the war effort. However its work is just as. if not nlore essential than. that of any of the other departments. The English department must train students to be able to use eorreet English and promote their ability to give and understand orders. You eau readily see how confusion might result from a poorly-worded order. Sueh eonfusion eanuot. be permitted if we are to win this war. ln reality. on the English department rests the respon- sibility of preparing students for oflieer training in our armed forees. This preliminary training is an important faetor in the studentis edlleation for it may determine whether he will enter ofiieer training sehool or be plaeed in the ranks. The English department at Crane. with Miss Ruth Corrigan as chairman. is aeeomplish- ing its purpose admirably by preparing stu- dents for their part in this war.
