Crane is a part of one of the most essential industries dur- ing a war or during peaeeg the pro- duetion of eitizens ahle and willing to maintain the standards and live up to the ideals of a delnoeratie soeiety. The work lreing done here is a very im- portant faetor in the future develop- ment of this eountry. QI During the war, students at Crane are prepared physi- eally as well as mentally for their role in this relentless eonflict. WHITHER CRANE? f In my Science and Craft Annual of 1914, To Know and To Do stands as a guiding light to that fine body of 1500 students and sixty faculty memhcrs of whom only four of us are here now. QI A school is known hy the scholarship and conduct of its students and hy the competence of its graduates. For over fifty years 'ETO Know and To Do has inspired our hoys to achieve while attend- ing school and to succeed in after life. The classes of '44 and 51416, we are sure. are no exception. You are to he congratulated on your development under the ahle sponsorship of Mr. Bickner, Mr. Reinstein, Mr. Sullivan, and Mr. Wcrre, and the leadership of your fine coaches and teachers throughout your four years. We anticipate that this will he reflected in the service you render to our com- munity and nation. We hid you adieu with mixed feelings of joy and regret. QI It was no small task to which you set yourselves four years ago. You well deserve the excellent technical training with which you prepared yourselves for college or for employment. Your success, however, is due not to your own efforts alone. You owe a great deal to your devoted parents, to your sympathetic and helpful teachers, and to a generous puhlic, all of whom have made your edu- cation possihle. Do not forget that you have incurred these ohligations. Whether you enter college or the world of work, you should further develop your com- munity interests and civic consciousness, lest you live for yourself alone. We are certain you will shoulder your responsibilities well. QI Temporarily, your plans may he interrupted hy a period of military service to your country. We know you will do honor to your school. Their duty is to train students in such a way that they will he ol great value to the war effort and will he hetter trained for a post-war joh. Our future hom- hardiers. navigators and pilots, must have a good foundation ill mathematics to he ahle to cope with thc advanced math courses they will meet in the Air Corps training. At Crane, a new division ol' the mathematics department was recently formed -- a pre-flight course, with Miss Regina Devine as instructor. The purpose of this course is to prepare students for advanced work in aeronautics. The regular mathematics course for non- languagc students requires Algebra l, 2 and 3 and Geometry l. 2 and 3. Trigonometry and a college survey course are offered to the am- hitious Craneite as advanced work. The language students are only required to take one year ol algebra and one year of geometry. However. it is to their advantage to take Algehra 3 and Solid Geometry also. Four semesters of essential mathematics are required of students who are taking the Smith- Hughes Course. 'IU' ENGLISH DEPARTMEN f At first glanee the work of the English department may not seem important to the war effort. However its work is just as. if not nlore essential than. that of any of the other departments. The English department must train students to be able to use eorreet English and promote their ability to give and understand orders. You eau readily see how confusion might result from a poorly-worded order. Sueh eonfusion eanuot. be permitted if we are to win this war. ln reality. on the English department rests the respon- sibility of preparing students for oflieer training in our armed forees. This preliminary training is an important faetor in the studentis edlleation for it may determine whether he will enter ofiieer training sehool or be plaeed in the ranks. The English department at Crane. with Miss Ruth Corrigan as chairman. is aeeomplish- ing its purpose admirably by preparing stu- dents for their part in this war. A . .7 , XM ,ltr UNlTY FUR PEflIIlE'. sk To meet the realities of a post-war world, unity among the nations has been set up by our wartime leaders as a guiding principle in the establishment of peace. Although international peace-planners have resorted to similar ideas in the past., every attempt at a substantial unification of nations for that purpose failed com- pletely. Various reasons have been pre- sented as to why the unity of these peace endeavors was disrupted. Greed, short- sightednes, intrigue, and economic and po- litical disagreements which could not be settled by arbitration are considered major factors in preventing the creation of any lasting system of international collabora- tion. Any study of the problems of peace, however, must involve more than a de- tailed examination of the obvious causes for war. ln no previous world peace asso- ciation have the great cultural dissimilar- ities' between nations-which are not di- rectly due to conflicting economic and po- litical interests-been given proper consid- eration. lt is for this reason as much as any other that international peace has not endured. Man has never fully understood the bc- havior of peoples other than his own. In the course of his cultural development, he seldom found it necessary to associate with the members of foreign civilizations. As he did not have the educational back- ground essential to international under- standing, he could form no sound concep- tions of peoples in other parts of the world. Thus he acquired many nationalistic prej- udices which were further aggravated by a perplexing variety of languages. Dominant politicians, in striving to satisfy their own ambitions, have been able to build up vio- Rnt emotions of fear and hatred by play- ing upon manis inherent distrust of that which he could not understand. Upon the realization that it is this lack of international understanding which has been a great barrier to world unity, it becomes obvious that there must be a gradual enlightenment among peoples as to existing conditions, and their causes, in all countries. Some progress has been made along these lines in the work of in- ternational organizations which have facil- itated the exchange of professors and stu- dents between different countries. The chief handicap with such attempts at international enlightenment is that their activities have been too restricted. Since they have been nothing more than a vol- untary addition to higher education, their influence upon the greater masses of peo- ple has been practically non-existent. Neg- ligence of this sort in a future world ir1lri'i ki'iri k'k'k'A'1l A'i k'k it would, ill time, prove disastrous for we would be overlooking the fact that it will be the connnon peoples of the earth who will consolidate the final unity of any international peace association. lf the peace we want is to be based upon the stable foundation of mutual under- standing, the individual nations must un- dertake to achieve it by utilizing the poten- tial influence of their entire educational systems. All subjects as interpreted in the schools nmst emphasize their related impor- tance in international affairs. All 111eans of education must be employed to prevent a vague, unthinking internationalism from blinding us to the realities of peacetime collaboration between nations. In our own United States we find the moral and intellectual force and the prac- tical experience in democratic education which makes our nation capable of leading mankind in developing the desired inter- national -understanding. America has shown that with a proper educational back- ground and the removal of major economic problems it is possible for different peo- ples to live together in comparative peace and harmony. The world can well follow the example of the American people in subordinating conflicting national ances- tries and racial differences to the interests of establishing a just and enduring world order. Although international understanding is of greatest consequence in the attainment of world unity, l do not intend to overlook the importance of eliminating major inter- national economic and political issues as specific causes for war. During the post- war cra, our leaders will be occupied with the task of constructing vast world ma- chinery for that purpose. In the interest of the great majority of peoples involved, there will be great changes in the eco- nomic and political structure of the world. Nations have become so dependent upon each other for their material well-being that the desirability of unlimited national authority, in this respect, is passing. Any international system by which nations arc allowed absolute freedom to pursue their national interests, without regard for oth- ers, will only breed more of the kind of aggression we are now trying to destroy. The countries of the world must have easy access to the raw materials and world mar- kets which they need for their economic prosperity. In the international disagree- ments which might be forthcoming, na- tions, acting individually, 111ust not have the right to use military force in deter- mining thc validity of their conflicting claims. All such disputes must be submit- ted for arbitration to the judgment of the whole community of nations. Wfith the necessary groundwork of inter- national understanding, we have every rea- son to hope that our age-long dream of a peaceful and secure world will be realized. This ti111e, our efforts will be supported by the combined wills of all peace-loving peoples. The benefits of the great ad- vancements in science and methods of communication will be at our disposal: and there will be the spirit and vigor of an educated youth to extend that desire for peace to the coming generations. Wle, the youth of today, have no desire to stiffer from the debacle of another pur- poseless peace such as followed the last war. Realizing our international responsi- bilitics in the world of tomorrow, we sec that a policy of isolation cannot possibly succeed in keeping world order. We ac- cept the interdependence of nations as inevitable in a modern age and demand the establishment of some system of or- derly relations bctwecn them. The peace we want must contain the conditions of economic and political security for all nations and be based upon thc principles of liberty for which freedom-loving peo- ples fight. Why, ask any of the 3,500 hoys who suhserihe to itl Year after year, press associations acclaim the Chronicle as one of the hest high sehool dailies puhlished, so it is not a matter of luek or eoinei- denee that the Chronicle is sueh a splendid pa- per, hut a lot of hard work and effort hehind it. An all around eoverage of all events happen- ing at Crane is assured hy the layout technique that is employed. The first and fourth pages are eoneerned mainly with the important news events happening every day. The third page is given over entirely to sports, splendidly eov- ered hy the sports editor and his stall of as- sistants. The seeond page is the feature page. Here the student may express himself in any way he desires: here the editor puts forth his views on whatever suhjeet pops into his feehle mind, and here the eorniest of jokes and the wisest ol' say- ings are printed. Like most metropolitan newspapers the Chroniele has a separate stall to handle the hnsiness affairs in addition to the regular news stall. Each reporter's assignments are put on a ehart and eheeked oll' as eaeh one is handed in. The other two classes being at Tilden and Lane and running concurrently with the one at Crane. CIVIL ir pafrof CADETS f Many air-minded Junior and Senior students at Crane are joining the Civil Air Patrol Cadets and taking advantage of the aviation eourses oIi'ered hy the Civil Air Patrol Squadrons Ivased in and near Chieago. The Civil Air Patrol is at present under the jurisdiction of the Army Air Corps and follows the training program set up hy it. This program inehules a Irriel' hasie military eourse, elementary and advaneed ground school eourses and training in speeial types of duty sueh as airport guard duty, crash erew praetiee, patrol missions. and eonnnunieations. Ground sehool elasses are eondueted in the eity high sehools in the evening sessions while other aetivities are earried out at the various airports. Crane Civil Air Patrol Cadets, now numhering ahout fifty hoys, represent many of the Chicagoland Squadrons, although the majority of the group art: memhers of Squadron 6Il-5 hased at the Harlem Airport. The Crane group meets onee a week after sehool at Crane for drill and military eourtesy and then joins the partieular squadron with whieh they are affiliated for the other elasses. Voluntary work in aetual patrol and eourier serviee is restrieted to senior lneinhers hut the eadets are preparing themselves in ease they may Iater have the opportunity to partieipate in sueh work. CI We can and will strive to attain the supreme goal of taking first place with Hying colors. II The purpose of the R.O.T.C. is to teach leadership, dependability. and to make lvetter citizens of all the cadets. II The R.O.T.C. cadet receives a l1lill0I' credit in place of gym, although once a week they have physical drill. The course of study includes the rifle manual, drill, theory, riHe marksman- ship, drill theory, and map reading. In the R.0.T.C. all cadets have an equal chance for advancement in rank. '100' o. T. C. ife TEAM. f Ending last season as the National Champs. was the aehievement ol the rifle team. They entered the Chicago R.0.'l'.C. rifle matehes. and emerged with a reeord 11,987 points out of a possihle 5,000. Next in their stride. they wo11 tl1e 6tl1 corps area ehampionship. running off all eontenders. Then eame the greatest test. Going down to the range. led hy their Captain Gunther Tohleek. the team shot itll amazing -198 out of a possihle 500. This means that out of all the shots taken. only 2 were 11ot hullseyes. But this national rifie high sehool ehampionship was not enough for the refl and lrlue shooters. Next they entered in the top rifle event of the United States. This is known as the Hearst Trophy. Competition is supplied hy all the seetional High Sehool and Collegiate. as well as anlateur champs. The tourney was won hy Crane. who won hy more than any other team has in the history of the tourney. The team this year has not shot ill the tourney yet this year. hut we hope they ean do as well. Due to an over- amount of spirit, the Cougars fumbled six times during the game. However, the boys looked like they would develop into championship material, with a little more hard drill. Next, the Crane team traveled out to Oak Park, to play the well coached, good sports from the suburb. ln this game, two stars were dis- covered. They were the hard tackling Joe Sturgulewski, and slippery running Ray lzzo. The Parkers did it 21-7. Starting the season off with a bang, the red and blue ran over a much weaker Marshall squad 26-6. Featuring the flashy running of Ray lzzo, who crossed the goal again and again, the Craneites showed what their months of hard training in Douglas Park did for them. The gold and blue tried ll8l'Il, but with Vil- liger pitching them and Hanson, Hanlon, and lVIcVey catching them the Cougartown boy just couldn't be stopped. They did it again 21-0. Witll the loss of Ray lzzo to the team, the team had to work with their hearts, and little 5'1 Frankie Monachino, to nose out Harrison 14--7. Little Frankie took Ray's place, and ran his legs off, to reel off one gain after another. The team work was swell, and Crane pulled together to finally win the game. The stands were calling to Coach Brown to send in the water boy, as the last team ran wild over an extremely weak Tuley team. Many of the boys from Tuley's first team were transfers from Crane. The reason they transferred, was that they couldn't make the red and blue last team. The end of the game found the scorc- board reading Crane 40, Tuley 0. Coming up against the stellar Steinmetz flashes, the Cougars just didn't have it. Tile old red and blue fought with their last ounce of spirit and strength, but Mat McCarthy and his teammates were too big. The flashes drew first blood as they scored during the middle of the first half, to take the lead. However later in the game the Cougars came back, with little Mona- chino running behind huge Al Liecardi, to finally cross that white line. However Steinlnetz would not give up their lead, and finally plowed through with a 13-7 victory. ln the muddiest galne of the year, Crane walked over Kelvyn Park 39-0. It was an off balance game as the ball would change hands many times during the course of a minute. Other things, like the interception of the ball by Guard Walter Smith, who ran 40 yards for a touchdown, made the game very exciting for the 23 people in the stands. The juniors turned out one of the hcst teams in Crane's history. Led hy such lroys as Chioles, captain of the junior indoors, undefeated in the 220, and anchorman of the relay team, the juniors heat such teams as St. Ignatius, champs of the Catholic league. This victory over the Catholic school, was one of the most stunning defeats in high school competition, due to the fact that the rules in the Catholic league as to size and weight, fa- vo1'ed St. Ignatius. Starting the outdoor season with Vcarino the 660 man as captain, the juniors took such teams as Steinmetz, Harrison, Senn, and Du Sahle. This is easy to understand, when you consider the fine relay team of Chioles, Grisham, Marini, and lVlarinos, along with little Krop who, although he weighs less than l05 pounds, took a first in the Oak Park relay. To furthcr holster the team, Clay, first rate hurdlcr, and Colosuno, great shot putter, the team has great hopes of taking the city title. Next, considering the seniors, the hest in the past few seasons, Coach Moore went ahead with advanced training, and many workouts. ln do- ing this he turned out such hoys as Skohel, undefeated in city mile, lVlcCarthy, gathering 94 points in a seasong Packard, Fitzgerald and many others of equal calihcr. ln the shot put, it was Liccardi and DcSimone, who upheld the colors of Crane, in its unusual high standard. Next to he applauded is the undefeated relay team of Packard, Nickoolos, McCarthy and Fitzgerald. Wlith latimcr at the hurdles, Crane was again well represented. Last hut not least, Ferrera, who took many firsts in the various competitions. It was a fine season for hoth teams, and we are looking forward to a city championship in the near future. The feneers. led hy Captain .laek Vlialdier, went through an undefeated season, and took the eity 4-hampionship. The team was superb, under the eoaehing of Julian Steinmetz. They won their sc-heduled meets hy sueh outrageous scores as I5-l over Lindhloom. All the feneers deserve a hand, as they have taken Crane's first City Championship sinee 1940. The team has great hopes for next year, and hope that they can do it again. SOCCER if It takes three years to produce a ehampion- ship Soeeer team. With this in mind Coaeh Steinmetz set out to lmild a team of the future. Most of the hoys were inexperienced, and the team lost many of their games. Constant drill and hard playing however, was a good eoaell. Many of the hoys will return next season, and will form a team that is well experieneed in all the intrieaeies of the game of Soeeer. Qualify- ing more boys than any other school. the seven Craneites entered the finals. Winning out in the finals were, Co-Captain Joe Sturgulewski, Jim Lasso, and Lester Schmidt. Runner-ups were Sam Guareno, Joe Biloto, Co-Captain Albert Stern, and John Sension. Much of the credit for the past fine season should be given to Coach Mann, who worked diligently with the boys.
