Soil from many historic places was around this seedling: Jamestown, Yorktown, Valley Forge, Eisenhower ' s Mother ' s birthplace in the Shenandoah Valley and his home in Kansas. The shovel used was the same one President Eisenhower used when he planted a Liberty Tree at his Mother ' s birthplace, when he visited Staunton and Augusta County in October, 1960. Through American History Mrs. Trainum points to the steps great men have taken in molding our way of life. m 111 k ■m . 1 1 if - i in iintMwn, _ ' y - • , Typing, Science and Mathematics Classes give students an opportunity to take steps which will give them an opportunity to prepare for the future in business, professions or industry. flTHLfTICS FOOT Kneeling: Donnie Smith, Clayborne Woods, Saford Downey, Floyd Harris, Tommy Shellenberger, Ronald Welcher, Dickie Zimmerman, Russell Sprouse, John Young, Paul Gladwell, William Wilcher. D. 39 52 The season of 1960 was the one in which Coach Ward confidently expected the Tornadoes to flex their muscles and post a second straight outstanding record in spite of being forced to schedule schools from 4 to 14 times as large as Craigsville High School. Unforseendevelopments, including four expected candidates deciding not to play, untimely injuries, and the seemingly perpetual disfavor of Lady Luck, combined to give the Tornadoes their first winless season. Although failing to reach the lofty level of victories which had been coveted, the Tornado gridmen gained the respect and admiration of fans and opponents alike by their spirited play. Ronald Welcher, Captain of the team, proved to be one of the outstanding ends in this area; Dickie Zimmerman provided countless thrills for the fans with his pin-point passing and deceptive ball handling; but perhaps the outstanding individual performance was rendered by Tommy Shellenberger who topped the scoring list. Victory was almost within the Tornadoes grasp in both the Northside and Stonewall Jackson games. Dog-tired and reserve shy, the gallant gridmen saw their hopes dashed in the closing minutes as North- side rallied for a 9-6 victory and Stonewall Jackson scored with only 42 seconds remaining to dampen Craigsville ' s first homecoming, 20-13. A number of Freshmen played important roles this year and, with the approaching consolidation of schools, such boys as Dickie Lembo, William Wilcher, Floyd Campbell and Donnie Smith, should insure improving football fortunes in the future. ; . _■•• ■ :?■ -i ? - ■ «£ ' ««© ‘-©MB BE § sll • w -. They met and defeated Spottswood 30-27 in the opening round of tournament play. First place Monterey with a perfect record for the season was too stiff competition in the fi¬ nals and the Craigsville lassies lost by a score of 59-28. Brenda Humphreys with 13.6 for the season and Jean Craig with 11.1 were in the top ten scorers for the District. The Coaches picked an All-District Team and each player received a trophy from the tournament direc¬ tor: Doris Morris was chosen as guard on this team. She also placed on All-Tournament team as guard and Brenda Humphreys placed as for¬ ward on this same team, which was chosen by the press and radio representatives present at the Tournament. 57 BOY’S Kneeling: Tommy Shellenberger, Russell Sprouse, Dickie Zimmerman, Paul Gladwell, Floyd Harris, Ronald Welcher. Despite being the shortest team in the dis¬ trict, several notable achievements were re¬ corded by this determined band of basketeers. The Tornadoes”, 1) Defeated every District team at least once; 2) Won over Monterey for the first time in four years; 3) Averaged over 50 points per game for the season; 4) had their best records both district-wise (8-2) and over¬ all (11-4) in four seasons; and, 5) Defeated the only Group II school on their schedule. Captain Dickie Zimmerman added 283 points to push his career total to 760, more than any other Craigsville lad has ever scored accord¬ ing to incomplete records. Dickie closed out his high school playing by being selected to both the All-District and All- Tournament first teams. Although small and usually playing in the shadow of Zimmerman, Russell Sprouse com¬ bined good scoring with exceptional speed to prove perhaps the most under rated performer in the district. Russell was the second leading scorer on the team with a total of 171 points. Floyd Harris was the defensive giant of the squad and in spite of his limited height, was us¬ ually assigned the opponents high scorer to guard. Paul Gladwell, Tommy Shellenberger and Ronald Welcher proved quite adept at getting the fast break under way with a good tip off the board in spite of being several inches shorter than their opponents. Insixty-one, the job was well done! Hail the Tornadoes ! v 1 I If j v l-mP BASKETBALL CHEERLEADERS: Naomi Claytor, Judy Colvin, Shirley Harris, Judy Staples, Eunice Puckett, Margaret Jane Clements. The J. V. Basketball Team plays about six games a season, giving the boys valuable experience, which will help them when they join the varsity squad. They play V. S. D. J. V. ' s and Valley High J. V. ' s. Several other grames are scheduled during the latter part of the season. 61 BASEBALL-1960 First Row: Wilson Randolph, Henry Minter, Gerald Harlow, Joe Sprouse, Ronnie Via, Russell Sprouse, Charles Bazzrea, Richard Woods. Second Row: Ronald Welcher, Clayborne Woods, Franklin Woods, Dickie Zimmerman, Floyd Harris, Milton Grady, Paul Gladwell, Roger Smith. As has been the case for several years recently, Craigsville ' s forces have been un¬ able to come up with sufficient hitting to give a more than adequate hurling corp the needed support to capture a championship. After getting off to a very slow start, the 1960 Tornado baseballers closed fast to gain a tie for third in the district standings. Roger Smith, Frank Woods and Saford Downey took turns on the mound with all turning in victories. Paul Gladwell, Charles Bazzrea and Dickie Zimmerman led the hitters. 62 TRACK-1960 First Row: Franklin Woods, Tommy Shellenberger, Ronnie Via, Russell Sprouse, John Young. Second Row: Clayborne Woods, Ronald Welcher, Dickie Zimmerman, Joe Sprouse, Floyd Harris. Third Row: William Fortune-Manager, Roger Waggie, Mr. Ward-Coach, Larry Washburn, Richard Woods. Led by Captain Ronnie Via, but with solid down the line strength, the Craigsville Tornadoes capped four straight dual meet victories by taking the District N Championship at Bridgewater College. First places in the district meet were taken by Via in the 220 yard dash; Tommy Shellenberger in the shot put; Ronald Welcher in the hurdles; Frank Woods in the broad jump; Johnny Young in the 440 yard dash; and the relay team of Shellenberger, Woods, Via and Russell Sprouse. A conflict resulted in only four boys traveling to the state meet but they returned with five medals and ranked 7th in the state. Tommy Shellenberger moved up to third statewise in the shot, only 19 inches behind the winning toss of 48 feet 2 inches. With only Ronnie Via graduating from this championship squad, the Tornado cindermen should be strong in the future. 63 FIELD DAY Sponsored by Athletic Association-May, 1960 The roving photo¬ grapher snaps a few footsteps in and around school Seniors of 1960 are all set for the great event-trip to the Nation’s Capitol.
