FOOT The Tornadoes of Craigsville High School swirl¬ ed into football warfare for the first time in 1958. Under the inspirational leadership of Co-Captains Cletus Myers and Ikey Nycum the novice gridders overcame the seemingly insurmountable twin handicaps of no experience and a sucidial schedule to make Craigsville gridiron history. While future teams will surely improve on the one victory, one tie, five losses record posted by this ini¬ tial team, it is doubtful that any future squad will have reason to be prouder of their accomplishments. To¬ tally lacking in gridiron savy, the Tornadoes were frequently compelled to rely solely on determination and desire. Ronnie Via dashed 57 yards to tally the first Craigsville touchdown and a Zimmerman to Meeks pass added the extra point as the Tornadoes battled from behind to upset Greenbrier ' s Captains. Along pass from Cletus Myers to Via was good for 43 yards and the second TD, while Tommy Shellenberger bulled 56 BALL BACK ROW Coach W.D.Ward, David Morris, Larry Martin, Tom Shellenberger, Ronnie Via, Roger Smith, Dickie Zimmerman, Preston Young, Jeffrey Lasher, Conrad Smiley, Floyd Harris, Pat Smiley and Wilson Randolph, Managers. over guard with the extra point which meant a 14-13 Craigsville Triumph. Although the Tornadoes will lose many valuable members from this squad, the outlook for the future appears bright. All-important gridiron experience has been gained and a sound nucleus return for next years team. After losing five top members of last year ' s squad, Mrs. Juanita Price performed an outstanding rebuild¬ ing job by directing the 1958-59 Lady Tornadoes to a third place District N finish. Had Mrs. Price been able to solve one perplexing problem, an acute shortage of reserve strength, the Craigsville girls would have, there is little doubt, climaxed their season by copping the district title. With Jane Lee Showker, the district ' s top scorer, and Mary Tuttle leading the offense and with one of the top guards of District N, Barbara Montgomery, spark¬ ing an outstanding defense, the Lady Tornadoes posted a district record of five victories against five defeats, three by scant margins. Over the entire season they scored 590 to their opponents 542. In tournament play the Craigsville Misses dropped a heartbreaker to the eventual champions, Spottswood, by three points. Kneeling: Joe Sprouse, Dickie Zimmerman, Harry Meeks, Cletus Myers, Bernard Nycum, Steve Sprouse, Preston Young, Ronnie Via BOYS’ The outlook at season ' s start could not have been considered bright for the Craigsville Cagers. Their ranks, devastated by graduation losses, the Tornado” hardwooders could boast of only two returnees who had seen extensive action in prior campaigns. In addition only three other squad members had more than JV experience. Added to these personal problems was perhaps the toughest schedule a C. H. S. team has ever played. The spirit of the boys remained high in spite of early reversals and in late season they were challenging for the top spot. After finishing the season in third place with 7 wins and 3 defeats the Tornadoes once again hit a cold night in tournament play and lost to North River by five points. Cletus Myers and Bernard Nycum as co-captains provided inspirational leadership with the sportsman¬ ship of the team being outstanding whether winning or losing. TRACK The 1958 Tornado” track team recorded a successful season in spite of being dethroned as district champions. In a tri-angular meet with Wilson JV ' s and North River, the Craigsville cindermen surprised by taking first place in the meet by a sizable margin. In the District N meet at Bridgewater College, un¬ familiarity with the track resulted in three disqualifications for minor infractions and the Tornadoes finished as runner-ups, 6 1 3 points behind the Champion¬ ship Monterey Rams . Ray Vaiksnoras prepared for the 220 Dash District N Track Meet Raymond Colvin putted the shot Sitting: Freddie Benson, Johnny Tuttle, Ronald Welcher, Raymond Colvin, Saford Downey, Mickey Cle¬ ments, Jimmy Mitchell, Donnie Moyers, Bobby Campbell, Conrad Smiley, Scorekeeper. Standing: Cletus Myers, Bernard Nycum, Winston Smith, Floyd Harris, Mr. W. D. Ward, Coach, Steve Sprouse, Sherman McLain, David Showker, Louis Bazzera, Riley Fitzgerald. BASEBALL Unfortunate injuries combined with untimely errors to tumble the 1958 base- ballers into fifth place in District competition. Recognized as one of the top teams, lady luck refused to shine on the Tornadoes . One of the top hitters, Ikey Nycum, was lost for most of the season when felled by a broken ankle. Saford Downey suffered a sprained wrist the day he was scheduled to pitch against Churchville and was unable to do so. Perhaps the true strength of this team is best reflected in the two defeats at the hands of District Champion North River. The Tornadoes were beaten in both instances by errors, first at North River 2-1 in the 12th inning, then at Craigsville 4-3 in regulation time. Baseball Team Pitcher A hit! Kneeling: Richard Woods, Dewey Shiflett, Tommy Shellenberger,Ronald Welcher, Roger Smith, Paul Gladwell, Russell Sprouse, Lowell Kelso. Standing: Mr.W.D. Ward, Coach, Roger Waggie, Douglas Windsor, Charles Jordan, Clayborne Woods, Donnie Smith, David Morris, John Young, Manager. J.V. BASKETBALL H The 1958-59 Baby Tornadoes have made an impressive start during the opening stages of an ambitious nine game schedule. Thus far they have recorded four victories and are unbeaten. Several outstanding prospects for future varsity teams are receiving their baptism under fire as members of the Junior Varsity.
