Jlmksi 'N- ' -ww 5' .ws M Once again the school year terminates, and the seniors go forth to take their places in the world of tomorrow. This was an evaluation year, and the GINKGO now tries to evaluate the senior class of 1956. What purpose has our graduation fulfilled? The receiving of diplomas is only a token of the untold wealth of knowledge and good times reaped by our graduates. As we cast aside our high school life and begin to View life in a new light, what memories of this wonderful year will we cherish forever? Perhaps some will remember the intoxicating gaiety of the Football Dance and the junior Prom. Others, no doubt, will recall the break from the dull routine of lessons and books furnished by our clubs and other extra-curricular activities. Still others will never forget the classes themselves, the fast teacher- student exchange of opinions and the humorous notes that frequently brightened the school days. Hut who of us will ever forget the evaluationf- the anxiety of the teachers, the students, and the thrill of knowing that we had passed inspection with flying colors? Let us not be misled: let us not lose sight of the job ahead. Let us evaluate this school year ourselves and estimate the value of our achievements. Read this hook fondly. Laugh at the amusing recollections and feel sad at the sentimental ones. Live the year of 1950 over again through the pages of this book, and evaluate its importance in your life. His ready wit and teasing grin have endeared him to all of us. He shares our joys, sympathizes with our sorrows, and under- stands our problems. JOHN W. BYER E D U C 'A T I O N 'l'he Board of Education is the nucleus oi the Crafton School System. Its members, headed by Mr. john W. Byer, meet the second Monday of each month to smooth out all the difficulties that arise during the school year. liach decision by the board is made only after careful deliberation, committee investigation, and group discussions. How little the stu- dents know of the work that goes on in their behalf by these conscientious citizens of our community! In this year of evaluation we can be especially proud of the board's efforts to advance our school to a high rank in the state educational system. We wish to extend our deepest apprecia- tion to each and every member of the board for the time and hard work devoted to our schools. First Row: Left to right: Mrs. lfllsii' R. Stewart. Mr. John NV. We tinally made itf The most won- derful year of o11r high school career rushed past in a whirlwind of excitement and activity. We tried to cram everything we could into the short space of nine months and succeeded admirably. if not a little breathlessly. As the days left for seniors rapidly diminished, we were the star performers on Student Government Day. Class Day, and Baccalaureate: and we completely stole the show at graduation. Now that graduation actually has arrived, we don't know whether to feel happy or sad. Our last year has ended abruptly. Our short reign as kings of Crafton High is over. But another phase of life is just beginning! We shall evaluate and he evaluated many times. We commence gladly, solenmly, proudly on our search for success. Xtlyisor Evaluation of goals directed juniors' efforts. Never underestimate the powers of the juniors! XYe really contributed much to the school and had a lot of fun doing it. Like old-timers we successfully managed the Magazine Drive. Une of our own juniors, jim Friday, was vice president of Student Council. The entire student body enjoyed the talent we pro- duced for our assembly program and the Jesters' Talent Hunt. George McClintock was the one you can always depend on whenever an accom- panist was needed. In early .-Xpril we rehearsed many long hours for our play. lt's a Great Life, which was fol- lowed two weeks later by the Junior Prom. The whole class must have folded apple blossoms for a month! Flay I have an admission slip? This was the year of the annual immigration of the lngramites and the resulting enlargement of our class. The more the merrieru. and this year has Certainly been merry. Our boys were right up there with the seniors in athletic activities, and the cheerleaders were just as peppy. liven the junior majorettes strutted and twirled as well as the logo graduates. Our class rings branded us as the class of dis- tinction among the sophomores and freshmen who gazed longingly at our newly-decorated lingers. Three wonderfully happy years are behind us now. We are going into the home stretch of our high school career, anticipating those magic words that we juniors will hear next September at the lirst pep meeting. Seniors lirst! With an air of formality and dig- nity we attended the Gridiron Glitterf' Yes, this has been a great year. XVe were tirst introduced to the mutilation and microscopes that are characteristic of biology class, the clatter and clang of the typewriter carriage, and the methods and miracles of nrst aid. Our four male officers kept the sophomore ball rolling as the days slipped by. Our sophomore assembly broke the ice for the other three classes and was well received by both the upperclassmen and the faculty. Dave Secor displayed his talent as a comedian and an orator. We were delighted when the lDreamtones copped first prize in the -lestersl Talent Hunt, even though we weren't sur- prised. Football and basketball games, the Canteen, and many parties crowded our evenings with end- less entertainment. Somehow they lessened the monotony of the same old classroom grind. Now we are half way through our high school days: yet we are sincerely grateful that we can spend the other half here where we have found the best of friends and the most understanding of teachers. SMALL Direct 4 ir 'tLoyal and true-hearted are the notes played by the Crafton High School band members as they swing, in perfect formation, onto the field for every football game. And who could be more loyal and true-hearted than the faithful band members who practice long hours in the summer and after school? Then, at game time, the instrumentalists and major- ettes are always there, even in freezing or rainy weather, to cheer the team on. At Halloween the band lends color and har- mony to the big community parade. Crafton's Band is often asked to perform for other com- munity activities, and they always respond with a fine show. BAND... Hours of preparation precede the Spring Band Concert. This year, inclement weather forced the second night performance to be postponed for a week. The band members accepted gracefully this interruption in their concert. They came through with an even more spectacular show of musical brilliance and marching ability, .and the majorettes displayed their twirling tricks. So thanks to the band for their dependability, good sportsmanship, and talent. None of us will ever forget the touching beauty of our Alma Mater when Mr. Small struck up the Crafton High School Band. i Q First Row: L4-ft to right: D. Jones. E. Lee-ty. 111. Wilson, T. Miss Gayvert had tive choruses which were the HB Girls, made up of Freshmen and Sophomore girls, the Boys' Chorus, the Mixed Chorus, the Mixed linsemble, and the Madrigal group. The first performance of the year was the American lCducation Week Program. For Christ- mas. a very beautiful service was given at the K. of C. for the Woman's Club of Crafton, and a part of that service was sung in a Christmas as- sembly at the high school. Also, the chorus provided entertainment at a small Easter assembly, and sang a few selections for baccalaureate and commencement. The chorus members, especially Miss Gayvert, devoted a lot of their time, including lunch hours, after school, and evenings, to make every per- formance a huge success. Many times the re- hearsals were long and tiring, but the satisfaction of a job well done more than repaid the members for their hard work. li GIRLS First Row: Left to right: M. Ewing. .l. The play this year was a three-act comedy entitled Henrietta the Eyighthn, which was expertly directed by Mr. Schroth. During the performances on December I7 and 18, a well-trained cast carried the play along ably with Bert Panella and Ann Armstrong working behind the scenes as student director and prop girl. The Stage Crew and those who painted scenery deserve a big hand for all their help. Many afternoons and evenings were given up, but everyone thoroughly enjoyed being in it and was very sorry to see it come to an end. N, xT1'xIZlllUll With Cathy Talerico as their captain, the cheer- leaders performed their routines with boundless energy. The squad was composed of three seniors and three juniors. Because of the grand job they did, we had many successful pep meetings. The cheerleaders bolstered the teams' morale throughout the season. The frosh cheerleaders really jumped and shouted to let everyone know that their team really had something to yell about. We were especially grateful to the cheering squads in this year of evaluation because they were the ones who helped us take stock of our school spirit. Through their efforts we have kept Craft- on's competitive sports' tradition alive. FRESH M ICN CH EERLEAI DERS First liowi Left to right: S. Shel- ton. A. In-X, S. Douglas Sevonml Row: T. Downing. Often when the game appeared to be on the rocks, tive of those cagers rushed in with a barrage of baskets. ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION These tine boys, along with Mr. Keefer, gave up much of their time to sell tickets for the football and basketball games. Without these boys Crafton would have been handicapped because of their sparse cheering section. The Athletic Association kept school spirit tiaming by trying to increase the, attendance at all games. They deserve credit for a thankless job well executed. J. Friday, Mr. Keefer, J. Smith, Il. Gannon I liisellof. R. Wagoner BASEBALL Though the Cougars lost some key men due to graduation, the squad is expected to come through in fine shape. Five returning lettermen will give the team the needed experience and will steady the newcomers to the team. The battery will be formed by Breen and Secor.
