One of the big surprises was a 53-52 upset over district leader Churchland. Due to inexperi- ence among the many young players the Admirals man- aged only one more victory the remainder of the season. Many times Coach Sumner had four Sophomores in the game. With the youth and tal- ent Coach Sumner has devel- oped, the 73-74 season cannot help but be suc- cessful. Coach Sumner gives Sophomore guard Mac Carroll instructions during a game. Back row, left to right; Lester Peters (sophomores), Harvey Jones (sophomore), Jenson Baker (Junior), and Glynn Moore (Junior). Inexperience was one of the main opponents of the team as this was the first year for many of the wrestlers. Still, the Admirals sent Richard “Truck” Grimsley, John Thompson, and Glenn Smith to the Regional meet and Grimsley also wrestled in the State meet. Other out- standing wrestlers were Mike Draughon, John McKay, and James Vogler. Better luck to the 73-74 team! Coach Huneycutt and Coach Scales urge a wrestler to victory. Front: Barry Bridgeman. John McKay is victorious against Indian River. ‘‘Truck” Grimsley shows the form which made him one of the top wrestlers in the area. 123 BASEBALL MM GETS NEW COACH The 1973 baseball team acquired a new coach, Mr. Jerry Shackelford wher former coach Willis Bell stepped up tc the position of Athletic Director. Coach Shackelford, aided by assistant coach Mr. Sneed, took a very young squad anc by the end of the season had them work- ing as a great team. Thre are only three seniors on the team: David Monell, John Neece, and Johnny Slaughter. The team didn’t do as well as expected in confer- ence play (4-5), but did beat Churchlanc and All Southeastern District pitcher Merle Henkel 2-0 and squeezed by dis- trict champ Deep Creek by the score ol 2-1. Cradock was led on the field by Kelly Miller (All Southeastern District, second team), David Monell, Vonney Schultz, Charles Edwards, Richard Harmon, Harvey Jones, and Jerry Chinn. Wayne McClellan was the top pitcher, all four conference wins. Other outstanding players were Donnie Cox, Keith Bri nson, Tony Tessenear, and Johnny Slaughter. With the youth on the squad and the coaching ability of Coach Shackelford, the 1974 baseball team should be a top district contender. Front: John Neece. First Row: Jimmy Martin, Johnny Slaughter, Charles Edwards, Kelly Miller, Donnie Cox, Jerry Cohen, David Monell, Cliff Ward (manager). Second Row: Coach Sneed, Wayne McClellan, Jesse Wells, Terry Wilburn, Richard Harmon, Jerry Chinn, Vonney Schultz, Keith Brinson, Tony Tessenear, Harvey Jones, Coach Shackelford. 124 Kelly Miller scores as Vonney Schultz looks on. Cradock was led on the courts by the top six: Chris Cooke, Tommy Stenzel, Alben Sellers, Ira Rice, William Bast, and James Vogler. Unfortunately, Alben Sellers was hurt close to the end of the season and Coach Precythe had to call on backup men Terry Dorn and Terry Smith to replace him. Thelma Loehr became the first female tennis player at Cradock this year when she joined the team. Other outstanding players were Robert Anderson and David Ditter. With four of his top six graduating, Coach Precythe is expecting good things next year from young players such as Mike Turner, David Perron, Mike Stricklin, and Richard Davis. The 1974 team should have another highly successful year. Good luck to Coach Precythe and theup- coming team!
