This hope involves the harmony and unity of the people of Cradock and can best be expressed by a single, simple word; Li£i If we are to see this dream come true, this unity of all, we must take the initiative. Only we can put aside petty grievances and differences and make life at Cradock High School worth living. 3 Admiral Dedication Goes To Mr. Barley It is not often that a man is blessed with outstanding char- acteristics as is our band director, Mr. Barley. Since coming to Cradock about six years ago, he has made the Cradock band one of the finest in the area. It takes a special person to draw talent from high school students and make it en- joyable at the same time. Mr. Barley is a fine musician, a good friend, and truly a fine man. To him, we dedicate the 1972 Admiral. 4 Mr. William Preston Barley 6 • w 9 10 Studen tL ife StudentL ifeS tudentL ifeS t u student Life StudentLife StudentLife StudentLife StudentLife dentLifeStudentLife StudentLife StudentLife StudentLife StudentLife StudentLife tLife tLife tfe ife tLife tLife tLife tLife StudentLife Happiness is Raindrops? Wet. That is the word that best describes this year’s homecoming festivities. Rain, life giving and beautiful, can also be very disappointing — especially disappointing to Betsy Bonner, Robbin Tyler, and their homecoming committee, who worked through the early hours of the morning preparing floats and other decorations only to see the many colors drip down into newly formed puddles on the cold parking lot. Though it may have seemed so, this experi- ence was not a total loss. Much was shared and much was gained. Many new friendships developed while many old ones became closer and, in essence, this is what made it a homecoming well worth remembering. It would probably be impossible to describe or explain these emotions as it is equally impossible to describe the existance and function of human nature. Therefore, we shall not attempt this. We shall only say that there is a happi- ness in becoming human for a coupie of weeks and a certain sadness in the fact that this feeling does not linger throughout the year. 19 Robbin Tyler Travels To San Antonio Tor The The Bellamy Mob hijacks a little school bus! Bellamy Award The 30th annual Bellamy Award was presented to McCollum High School and the state of Texas in October of 1971. Many people, who have closed their eyes and minds on the ideals on which our country is based, think of the award as simply a “flag-waving ceremo- ny.” But it is more than that. The most important aspects of the whole week were the mass exchange of communication and the creation of long lasting, and loving friendships. Who could ask for more? TO M COLLUf Dr. Margarette Miller, (holding newspap er) found- er of the Bellamy Award and the whole gang of directors!? The 30th Annual Bellamy Award Delegation. 20 On March 24 and 25 the circus came to Cradock. The fine arts department presented “On With the Show,’’ a musical comedy. Young and old alike laughed at the clowns and were thrilled by the wonderful per- formance of the chorus and band members. Once again this year the fine arts department at Cradock is to be commended on a job well done. Doug Jamison, Michelle Maxon, and John Garner sing “Easy Livin’ is the Life For Me. Despite handicaps and only two wins out of nine games, the Ad- mirals showed noteworthy sportsmanship and spirit even in defeat. : t 96 In spite of the early losses, the Admirals fought back to win against Norcom and Churchland. With the injury of the starting quarterback, Coach Wade was forced to recruit Keith Isbel (freshman) and David Monell (junior) who both show promise for the 1972-73 season. 97 Cradock JV: City Champions The Baby Admirals, led by a new coach, Mr. John Thompson, carried off the city trophy. Despite the opening defeat to Great Bridge the J.V. team sprung back to win two straight games, a 12-6 victory over Deep Creek, and a 36-0 rout of Churchland. The season was shortened because of post- ponements, due to rain, of three games. But the weather held out long enough for the Mighty Baby Admirals to meet the Strong Baby Presidents of Wilson, for the City Championship. It was a hard fought game but the Admirals came out on top with a 6-0 vic- tory. Head Coach John Thompson 98 v Cross Country The 1971-72 Cross Country Team. Robert Bilko races on toward finish. 99 30 Admirals Assasinate Presidents The agony of defeat in the earlier part of the season was somewhat lessened by the resounding victories over the Wilson Presidents and Oscar Smith Tigers. Building a team after the loss of most varsity stars and the injury of Dennis Askew, the starting guard, Coach Carson’s fighting Admi- rals put forth a tremendous and praiseworthy effort. Despite the season, spirit and moral still run high and the team and school look forward to a better season next year. 100 ' •w© Head Coach — Ray Carson 101 Front Row: Jackie Hunter, Charles Holloman, Wilbur Hinton, Dennis Askew, Low Ward, Mike Taylor, Greg Mosher. Basketball team started the season with two big wins over archrivals Deep Creek and Western Branch. Due to the loss of one of their starting forwards, Lester Peters, the team suffered losses in their later games. With the help of the starting center, Dexter Cherry, and team members Kelly Miller and Glynn Moore, the J.V. managed to add one more vic- tory to their record. 103 Mat Men Show Promise The 1971-72 Admiral wres- tling team showed outstanding sportsmanship both on and off the mat. The team was com- posed of many new wrestlers, a fact that proved important to the season’s outcome. The fine coaching of Mr. Richard Hunneycutt and Mr. Thomas Bailey helped to send members of the team to the regional tournament. Members who par- ticipated included Richard (Truck) Grimsley, M. Draughen, Stanley Koonce, and Tommy Pollock. Steve Harmon also was an outstanding wrestler who placed fifth in the district. With the experience gained this year, the Admiral mat-men are looking forward to the ’72-73 season. 104 Scoreboard Cradock vs F.M.A. Won Cradock vs Great Bridge Lost Cradock vs Wilson Lost Cradock vs Deep Creek Lost Cradock vs Churchiand Lost Cradock vs Indian River Lost 105 Track Team Shows Outstanding Talent The 1972 Cradock High Track Team. i 106 Donald Hawkins; Top District Miler Donald Hawkins, Cradock’s outstanding miler, accepts well-deserved trophy from the Portsmouth Sports Club.
