Expressions The Admiral 1971 Cradock High School Portsmouth, Virginia Volume 32 PORTSMOUTH PUBLIC LIBRARIf 601 COURT STREET PORTSMOUTH, VA. 23704 Classes 12 Faculty 62 Organizations 84 Athletics 122 Student Life 150 Graduation 172 Advertisements 182 The Revelation of Ourselves Expressions of appreciation, grati- tude, pride, or victory are common on the faces of Cradock students. The face expresses our feelings toward someone or something. Even our most hidden emotions are evident in the lines, dimples, and cavities of the face. A thought, the joy of a memory, or the disappointment and hurt of a loss can be detected in the sparkle of an eye or unwept tears. The gritting of teeth, the set of the jaw, both express a team’s confidence and wariness of their opponent. The laughter in an assembly, the lump that grows in your throat when you hear the Alma Mater, these feelings, too, are shown by our expressions. Our expressions serve as the picture of our inner soul. 3 Expressions in Stone The halls of Cradock are each carved by the memories of the past and the hopes of the future. As one walks through these corridors, his expressions change with each pass- ing door. The memory of a crabby teacher, the honors of receiving a much deserved award, and then the unforgettable memory of the apathy of some people. This school will always hold reminiscences for some and with each one there will be an expression within one’s soul. Determination and Anticipation The determination of reaching a goal; the anticipation of winning a game; these are vital aspects of Cradock people. A Maze of Faces I The Cradock Admirals carry many varied expressions. There are ones of joy, sadness, fear and excitement. These play an important role in the lives of the Admirals. • “V - , rN‘ A 6 Something to Smile About Smiles for a friendly teacher, one you can really talk to; smiles for the silly new cheers and a cheerleader who really shows spirit; smiles for a place to rest in sixth period; smiles for a high school where you don’t have to be afraid; smiles for Cradock and the Admirals. 9 Tolerance and Acceptance is Displayed by Mrs. Hawkins From Life Her thoughts are like a flock of butterflies. She has a merry love of little things, And a bright flutter of speech, whereto she brings A threefold eloquence — voice, hands and eyes. Yet under all a subtle silence lies As a bird’s heart is hidden by its wings; And you shall search through many wanderings The fairyland of her realities. She hides herself behind a busy brain — A woman, with a child’s laugh in her blood; A maid, wearing the shadow of motherhood — Wise with the quiet memory of old pain. As the soft glamor of remembered rain Hallows the gladness of a sunlit wood. Brian Hooker 10 11 Classes Mr. Weatherford Leads The Class of ’71 to a Successful Year The school year 1970-71 rapidly approached maturity. With every fleeting month, there was certain to be a cherished memory impregnated within the hearts of every student at Cradock High. Perhaps no other group of individuals felt the impend- ing effects of this year more than the senior class. The senior class officers acted primarily as mediators between the class sponsor and all seniors. It was the foremost concern of each officer to make certain that the best interests of all class members were upheld. Throughout the year, various money-raising projects were sponsored for the promotion of class activities. The Senior Banquet and the Senior Class Play were only a few planned activities which enabled se- niors to exemplify their talents, enthu- siasm, and devotion to all other students as they strove to uphold the pride and esteem which distinguished them as seniors. Indeed, they are very pleased with and extremely proud of their role at Cradock this year. Each and every one of them are true Admi- rals, and their pride in being Admirals is on continuous display. This year has been a most busy and productive one for them. They have taken part in almost all school activi- ties. The class has sponsored numerous fund-raising act ivities to help make the Junior-Senior Prom of 1971 a most unforgettable occasion for the great Senior Class, and one to be remembered by all who attended. Under the guidance of their most gracious and patient sponsors. Miss Linda Butler and Mr. Jerry Shackelford, they have profited in many ways this year. They feel ready and anxious to make the giant step to become Seniors, but 1971, their year as Juniors, will never be forgotten by them. Class Officers: Mr. Shackelford, sponsor; Charisse Spencer, V. Sophomore Leaders Send Out Good Vibrations Unlike the totally confused year of a freshman, the students in the Class of 73 have discarded some of their unsettled ways for more stable ones. This could be seen in the contentment on their faces as they worked vigorously in the year’s Clothing Drive and the March of Dimes Contribution. Sophomores accredit much of their success to their class sponsor, Mrs. B.A. Stanback. Under her leadership, they sponsored many activities to meet the expenses of an exciting and rewarding Prom. These activities included the selling of candy, car washes, bake sales and doughnut sales. In September the SCA held orienta- tion for freshmen and new students. They also sponsored the annual Back-To-School Dance and Teacher’s Tea. October found the Council occupied with the United Fund Drive, Homecoming, Citizenship Week, and mock elections. The student body’s cooperation with the SCA aided in making the Thanksgiving Food Drive and the Korean Orphanage Collection tremendous successes. December was devoted to sponsoring the Children’s Christmas Party, the Christmas Door Contest, and the mail service. Next on the agenda came the March of Dimes Drive, the Valentine mail service and the Miss Cradock Contest. PRINCIP “Well we tried again,” sigh SCA Officers resignedly. Works The students who support the yearbook seldom realize the discouraging hours spent measuring captions and computing headline lengths. These people must familiar- ize themselves with the art of selling the book to not only the students, but to the neighboring establishments through the selling of ads. The annual staff turns a year’s work and activities into a memory book for years to come. Their job is a demanding one, one that requires many late hours of typing, editing, and composing. Through the guidance of our sponsor, Mrs. Stroman, and co-editors Debbie Weaver and Betsy Remnet we feel that this task has been accomplished. Annual Staff Photographers, John Prather and Shelton Mutter, are diligently at «ork in the dark room. 89 Log Staff Fights Poll ution This year was a most productive one for the LOG Staff. In an effort to economize, the staff members, in addition to their normal duties, took on jobs previously done by the print- er. The annual Literary Arts Contest was the most rewarding project un- dertaken by the Staff. “What is going on back there?” wonders Kay Hooker as Anna Thompson stares into space. “This poem is unbelievable,” gasps Miss Hampton as Editor Lila Printz chuckles. 90 America, the Beautiful 91 Shipmate Staff Produces Great Senior Issue Co-Editors Charlotte Carter, Mary Barnes, Debbie Tibbits, and Moscow Spencer relax with their sponsor. Recieves Superior Ratings The Industrial Cooperative Training program is a plan for implementing the training resources of the school and the community. It is an arrange- ment between the industrial, technical, and professional business establishments in the community and the public high school, whereby the establishments furnish the technical and ethical subject matter related to the occupation, and the high school furnishes a teacher-coordinator who directs the training of the student through counciling, classroom instruction, and periodic visits on the job. This year’s V.I.C.A. Club has done many worthwhile projects, such as selling pins. They attended numerous rallies. At the District Festival this year, twelve students received superi- or ratings and later attended the State Conventi on. One student. They were given time on WTAR for the ‘‘Get Out Vote Campaign.” For the student body’s benefit, D.E.C.A. sponsored a ‘‘Shoplifting Prevention Campaign”. Cradock played the host for the District Officer Session-Training and the District Fall Rally. Special guests at meeting included Fitzpatrick and Whitehurst’s representative Mr. Lustic and Margaret Black, an alumnae of D.E., who talked of improvement and techniques of good grooming. The spirit they displayed at sports events and on projects contributed much toward in- terest in student participation in school activities. They put up spirit posters in the cafeteria for football and wrestling, and their members wore spirit tags. They also sold seasonal athletic passes. The club’s homecoming float was named “Best Looking”. During the game a 56-yard touchdown pass was thrown by Johnny Slaughter, who was later injured. The next week Cradock started fast against Great Bridge. In the first quarter, Mack Brown intercepted a pass which was later run in by Clyde Jacobs. Unfortunately we still lost 28 to 6. The second defeat of the season came when the Norcom Greyhounds romped over us 44 to 6. Despite the overwhelming score, the Admirals running back David Monell scored a last-second touchdown. The following week was to bring change to the luck encountered for the last two weeks. With a 15-15 tie, Wesley Smith made a winning interception for the 23 to 15 win over Western Branch. In the Homecoming game, Cradock was defeated 26 to 8. In this game with Indian River, Mack Brown scored the only touchdown. Head Coach C. Wade and Coaches R. Honeycutt and B. Outstand- ing players were Wesley Smith and David Monell. This win was the first of three in a row. Next, Cradock met Crestwood at home. Johnny Slaughter, who had been out for most of the season, returned to lead the Admirals to a 27 to 0 shutout. Wesley Smith scored three of the four touchdowns with the fourth going to Clyde Jacobs. Also, Eppa Barkley scored three points on conversions. In the ninth game of the season, the Admirals shut out Churchland 28 to 0. Johnny Slaughter threw two touchdown passes, Clyde Jacobs ran one in, and Eppa Barkley intercepted a pass which resulted in an eighty-yard touchdown. In their final game, Cradock was defeated 26 to 6 by Wilson. This ended our season with a 5 and 5 record. ■ ' Cornbread” Smith, Steven Jones, and Clyde Jacobs are in defensively for the Admirals. Butch Evans and Mike Roseborrough show how Admiral pursuit is made effective. The Junior Varsity football team ended with a 7-3 record. Led by coaches Richard Huneycutt and Butch Bisese, the J.V. squad succeeded in sportsmanship as well as having a winning season. The J.V. team accomplished a fantastic record with the amazing throwing power of quarterback Steve Harmon and the blinding speed of their running backs Fred Jacobs, Mike Rosebrough, and Keith Brinson. On defense the J.V. squad was unbeatable. Their great pass rush prevented the opposing teams from accomplishing their game plans. “Sugar Bear” Barkley was a great threat on defense as he and Elwin Evans broke up many plays with their explosive attack. Admirals line up against Oscar Smith in a spread formation. 128 Bruce Stone foils an attempted pass play. Coach Bisese walks across the field after a successful win. Steve Harmon sprints down the field leaving defenders behind. Terry Barkley (Sugar Bear), blocks an attempted punt. 129 Admirals Place Second in District The 70-71 season was one of the most successful seasons in Cradock basketball history. The final record of 14-6 and a close second place finish in the Southeastern District Tournament is evidence of their suc- cess. Teams throughout the area became aware of and worried about the Cradock fast break which was very effective. Wesley Smith was chosen as Portsmouth’s Outstanding Player, but it was the team effort that was responsible for their great success. Besides Wesley, Eddie Smith, Randy Bailey, Eppa Barkley, Earl Jordan, Myron Moore, Wayne Cherry, Matthew Hill and Bob Larsen were main Admiral Stars. Coach Carson’s 70-71 dream was just five points away in the final tournament game, but he was justly proud of the drive and determination displayed by the team members. The Cradock fans also were an important factor as their spirit and rhythm provided great encouragement to the Fighting Admirals. J.V. Coach Butch Bisese looks on as Coach Carson instructs the team during a time out. The quickness of Eppa Barkley results in a steal and two points for Cradock. Cornbread Smith prepares to add another point to the many he has already scored. 130 The 1970-71 members are: First row — Robert Larsen, Bud Ballard, Mike Eaton, Wesley “Cornbread Smith, Myron Moore, Matthew Hill, Eddie Smith, Randy Bailey, Thomas Bullock, Arnold Smith, Earl Jordan, Dennis Askew, Wayne Cherry and Eppa Barkley. Charles Holloman and Bennett Martin move upcourt against Churchland. These two young men are important to the J.V.’s. JV Shows Promise for the Future Although the J.V. basketball team was not acquainted with winning ways there were several bright spots to the J.V. season. One was Coach Bisese’s leadership on and off the court which was outstanding considering this was his first season as a coach. Mike Taylor and Dwight Mitchell were the two most valuable players to the team. Both young men show great potential in their upcoming careers. Glenn Moore, Bennett Martin, Charles Holloman and Tony Smith also dem- onstrated excellent scoring and rebounding abilities and should help to provide a strong varsity team next year. The J.V. record does not begin to show the effort and determination put forth by the players. There were many close games that saw tha Admirals fall short by just a few points. But, no matter what the breaks of the game, the Admirals always acted in a sportsmanlike manner that brought much credit to themselves as we ll as our school. Playmaker Mike Taylor shows that a small man can play basketball as he takes the ball downcourt. Glenn Moore easily outjumps his opponent. His excep- tional jumping ability resulted in many Cradock rebounds. 133 Team Says, “Wait Till Next Year!’ The Admiral Matmen launched their 1971 season with only four returning veterans. Twelve strong and backed by an ironclad coach, the Cradock wrestlers faced each match with a challenging spirit. Unlike few other sports, wrestling emphasizes individual achievement as opposed to team accomplishment. Self-discipline is the most important characteristic required of a wrestler. With concentration and a sound body the wrestler strives to gain control of his opponent. This year Mike Draughn, Tommy Pallock, and Melvin Knight placed in the South-Eastern District Tournament. Underclassmen domi- nate the team, so as Coach Huneycutt often says, “Wait till next year.” Team captains Tommy Pollock and David Monell welcome the Oscar Smith team. Fred Gustafson locks-up with his opponent. Fred Gustafson moves for position on an Oscar Smith wrestler. Cradock’s heavyweight, Lawrence Chambers, does his thing. Wait till next year! 135 With Wings on Their Feet Under the watchful eyes of coaches Precythe and Singletary, the cross- country team retained a perfect record and their district title. In the spring of 1970 some 50 girls were competing for the honor of being Varsity Cheerleaders. Those ten lucky girls could be found practicing during the long hot summer months. Two weeks in July the girls went to a National Cheerleaders As- sociation Summer Cheerleaders School. There they received 5 awards; 3 Excellent, 1 Outstanding, and 1 Honorable Mention. In the fall they led the student body in pep rallies and cheered our football team toward victory. In the winter they cheered our basketball team forward. Then in the spring of 1971 these girls were teaching some 50 hopeful girls the skills and tech- niques they had acquired during the year. Kneeling — David Monell, Sol Ingram, Kenny Banks, Mack Brown, Robert Larsen, Gerald Harman, Joey Johnson, Johnny Slaughter. Having already won the District and Regional trophies, the baseball team traveled to Colonial Heights for the State Semi-final game with George Wythe. Here, Cradock’s hopes for a State Title were shot down when George Wythe scored the winning run in the 9th inning on a close play at home, breaking the 1-1 tie. Cradock scored first in the 6th inning and held the lead momentarily on pitcher, Randy Bailey’s homerun. Naturally Admiral fans were dis- heartened at the loss, but soon realized that never before in history had any team at Cradock come so close to a State championship. Our congratulations to Mr. Bell and the team on a fine season! The making of a Regional Championship. Coach Bell admires the Eastern Regional Trophy which the team worked for so diligently. 146 I David Monnell scores again for the Admirals. Bobby Larsen hits a clean single to right field. Throughout the season at least 7 of the starting nine players were freshman. All of the J.V. players showed a great deal of prom- ise for their varsity careers. Freshman Gerald Harmon was the leading hitter and was outstanding at third base and pitcher. Wayne McClellan played well at both the pitching and outfield positions. Other outstanding players were Darwin Bales, Jerry Chinn, Donald Cox, Butch Evans, Richard Harmon, Kelly Miller, Jerry Phillips, Rusty Pope, and Vonney Shultz. J.V. Homecoming is unlike any other day of our school year. It is tenderly special because it is a day when we are all one. On Homecoming all social and racial barriers are destroyed. Together we welcome our past gradu- ates home to celebrate their reunion. This year “Under the Big Top’’ provided a lively atmosphere in which we coordinated our hearts and hands to produce a fantastic Homecoming 1970. For the underclassmen, there will be others. But for the Seniors, October 16, 1970 was the last of those special Homecoming days. 152 The Kappa Kat i Alben Sellers shows Leanna Jepson how to hang ’em high. Leslie Trent T ravels to South Dakota for the 1970 Bellamy Award Each year the National Bellamy Award honors Francis Bellamy, author of the Pledge of Allegiance by recognizing one outstanding high school in the nation. The Bellamy Award includes a week of banquets, classes, assemblies, tours, receptions, and a lot of fun. The most important part of the Bellamy Award though, is that it gives young people a chance to speak out. It is a reassurance that in a nation of present insecurity there is a generation of youth striving for a better America, a better world, a better way of life. America’s youth is taking heed to a call of duty. The goal of young people today is to produce and American so- ciety of enforced justice, increased opportunity, and great national pride. As leaders of tomorrow we all share this obligation to preserve and protect freedom. And, as Jan is Joplin put it, “It ain’t nothin’ if it ain’t free.” Leslie Trent, Virginia’s delegate to the National Bellamy Award, and the rest of the gang — grazin’ in the grass. The Admirals’ good cheer was spread universally this year. The S.C.A. sponsored a drive to play Santa Claus to a home for needy orphans in Korea. The beaming grins of happy children filled the cafeteria with Yuletide spirit at the annual Children’s Christmas Party. Decorated doors helped the spirit float all over the school. Students and teachers enjoyed the convenience of the Christmas Mail Service while at the same time aiding the TB fund. To top off the holiday atmosphere, the Music Department presented an inspiring concert of Christmas music. The school seemed to ring with the Christmas spirit and the Admirals took great pride in helping others have a happy Christmas. Friday, December 8, was wild with excietment. Smiles were unquenchable and laughter unending. But three o’clock brought a building quiet with sleepy halls. The Admirals had gone home for Christmas. ■V And a Partridge Just what I always wanted! American Lila Ward, chosen Miss Congeniality by the contestants, displays her formal wear. First runner-up, Dee-Dee Kramer, offers a delightful smile to the audi- ence. On March 11, 1971 backstage of the Cradock High School auditorium was a complete chaos. Pictures were flashed, tears wiped, make-up and hair were done over and over again, and the air sang with nervous chuckles, sighs, and whimpers. A major production was in the making. At 8:00 the audience hushed, the lights dimmed, and emcee Richard Jackson introduced twenty beaming girls, one within an hour would be Miss Cradock. The contestants selected Lila Ward as Miss Congeniality and the judges picked Barbara Curtis to be our American Woman, Miss Cradock 1971. With tear-filled eyes and a winning smile, Barbara began her reign as Miss Cradock. “American Woman”, sponsored by the Student Council and directed by Miss Becky Ouattlebaum proved to be an evening of enchantment. Backstage is a busy place and Student Director, Becky Ouattlebaum performs as Dear Abby for Sharon Miller, Dee-Dee Kramer, and Terri Halstead. The play was a combination of suspense and comedy quite different from others previously performed at Cradock. Action took place from all points of the auditorium and the audi- ence never knew what to expect. “Rehearsal for Death’’ was one more way in which the Cradock students displayed their talents. On the evening of April 17, the only thing that the underclassmen had to do was to click the heels of their ruby slippers and suddenly they were off “To the Land of Oz”. Castles, rainbows, and flowers decked the walls as happy couples danced to the beat of the “Black River Circus.” At the door gifts of flowers and poppy incense were given to each couple. Refreshments lightened the evening. Satisfied and relieved smiles could be seen on the faces of weary prom committee members especially chairman, Norma Lowman and co- chairman, Julie Cantwell. Sponsors, Mrs. Stoman and Mrs. Stanback, also expressed sighs of relief as they cele- brated. It was truly an enchanted evening — not to be forgotten by anyone. The play involved the lives of a derranged teenager, and artificial grandmother, and exconvict governess, a nervous manservant, and a sensitive mother. Ann Whitaker and Jeff Murray took the responsibility of being student directors. The stage came alive with not only the melancholy and mysterious mood of the play but also the sentimentality of the cast members. After a lively cast party the cast, including many veterans of such productions, left the stage for the last time. Susan Balsor concentrates during her last performance. 5 The emotions of Madrigal and Laurel can be seen on their faces during this tender moment. 166 I Ambitious Juniors Present “Age of Aquarius’’ The First Lady of the Junior Class and “Saint” of the prom, Robbin Tyler pulls a few strings. What do tee-shirts, doughnuts, soapy cars, and ’’talented” faculty members have in common? In our case they all mean PROM. After many strenuous vyeeks of raising money, preparations for the prom fi- nally came to life. Under the patient guidance of Mr. Shackleford and Miss Butler, the Junior class combined their talents to produce a unique prom. On Friday evening, April 30, the ‘‘Age of Aquarius” davyned. For the first time in prom history, two bands performed. The astrological theme was carried out with starry sky and mystical horoscope symbols. Although the members of the small prom committee beamed with smiles of pride and relief, Robbin Tyler, the exhausted chairman could be seen quietly weeping sentimental tears. The Seniors were deeply honored by the fantastic dance and the Juniors were just plain happy. The looks on Pat’s and Mary Ann’s faces seem to say, “No way, Bobby! Underclassmen stood as the seniors entered the gym for the last time. Comical skits were performed as David Bradley read the Class History. Also, the Last Will and Testament prompted many laughs from the audience. Many deserving seniors were presented with scholar- ships and other awards. Marilyn Gatling presented the senior class gift — new flags for the school. Mrs. Hawkins accepted the yearbook dedication as the student body responded with a standing ovation. Tears filled some eyes when the class song and poem were presented for the student body. As the seniors filed out of the gym some cried, some smiled, other were indifferent to the situation. Unlike previous years, few seniors left the school grounds after the assembly, but instead remained for a party and picnic held in their honor. This proved to be a successful substitute on the part of the administration as most seniors enjoyed themselves. An Ending: A Beginning On Monday night, June 14, the Se- nior Class marched proudly into the stadium where they ended their high school years and began a new way of life. As speeches were made and awards given, many seniors, no doubt, wondered what lie ahead. The twenty-one honor graduates sat proudly on the first row as they anxiously awaited their diplomas. As Mr. Byrd read the names, Mr. Gray presented the seniors with their diplomas, after which Mr. Bailey flipped their tassels signifying the new graduates as alumni. The emotions of most seniors were difficult to describe, but in the minds of the underclassmen, the mighty Class of ’71 will always be remembered.
