The Language Arts Department functions under the guidance of Miss Green, English chairman, and of Mrs. Bruce, foreign language chairman. As a section with which all students must come into direct contact, the Language Arts Department exerts a great influence. All English instruction has as its aim teaching communication characterized by clarity and effectiveness. Many stu- dents reap future career benefits from the Erench, Spanish, or Latin courses which they now take with great interest and enjoyment. Speech, dramatics, and jour- nalism are ungrouped electives offered. Students may also participate in pub- lication of the literary magazine and year- book. Its objectives are outlined as establishing democratic behavioral guide lines, critical thought, and toleration of differences. Students are enabled to meet ' political, social, and economic challenges and thereby to deal with the complexities of the modern world. The study of history and government allow the relating of the past to the present; also provided are the basis for a personal sense of citizenship, civic-mindedness, and the realization of responsibilities along with privileges.
