Each phase of life is sought out, magnified, and perfected to reflect accurately the abound- ing spirit that is Cradock’s own. These aspects of life are as variegated threads united into one skein, from which each person can unravel a portion to weave his own gar- ment and embellish it selectively with academics, art, music, drama, and extra-curricular activities of the high- est quality. Within each student is instilled a keen aware- ness of the surrounding rarity, distinction, and in- dividuality. There is available an unequaled selection of opportunities to elevate one’s life and to augment the scope of one’s mind. Diversity in old and new, formality and informality, converge to color a unique portrait of many combined to form one. For such a school, an Incunabulum is appropriate. Mrs. Staffon’s instructions in art class have helped many students produce remarkable pieces of work. All Band activities are under the direction of Mr. Barley. Vocational Education Offers Preparation for A Technical Tomorrow The Vocational Education Depart- ment functions successfully under the direction of Mr. Comey; included in this area are I.C.T., L.P.N., D.E., and Home Economics. Designed for those students who are not college-bound, the program includes preparation for jobs following graduation which require technical skills. This vocational and technical education recognizes needs of individuals. By helping to prepare youths to take their places in an expanding economy, Vo- cational Education contributes im- portantly to Virginia’s industrial growth. Guidance director, Mrs. Pollard, is assisted by counselors for the freshman, sophomore, and junior classes and a full- time office clerk. The department ini- tiated an orientation program to famil- iarize new students with Cradock. Through the expert counseling provided, students learn to recognize their own abilities and to plan for the new goals and interests which they establish. One of the guidance force ' s main objectives is to aid all students in schedule planning in order to offer adequate preparation for the future. Chappell Special Grade Placement Ungraded Education A.B., Bob Jones University Geraldine J. Gregg Special Education B.S., Madison College Cradock Incorporates Special and Ungraded Education Into Its Curriculum Special Education, taught by Mrs. Gregg, is devised for those students who because of exceptionalities, need a pro- gram planned to fulfill their needs. Courses of study are geared to possess suitability to the individual and to enable him to progress at his own speed and ability. At the high school stage, special education curriculum includes pre- paratory training for employment and community position. Such special teach- ing has as its goal the formation of worth- while, productive individuals. Mr. Robert Chappell’s ungraded classes have been developed for the benefit of those students affected by such things as interrupted education, perhaps due to moving, and who therefore do not perform to the height of their capabilities. Ungraded education is a work-study pro- gram, having as its goal the gearing and programming of such academically qualified students to re-enter normal academic achievement. The remainder of ungraded students receive preparation for job interviews and are readied for apprenticeships or on-the-job training. Ungraded study at Cradock has been successful in obtaining employment positions for each of its ten students. Mrs. Gregg demonstrates a new project with her class. Cradock Students Render Special Services Helping Cradock to operate as a whole com- posed of many cooperative parts are the students who volunteer part-time service. During lunches in the cafeteria, the traffic committee directs the masses so that no area will become congested, thus stopping the smooth flow of long lunch lines. The general office and guidance office are assisted by volunteers during their study halls. Tasks for workers in both offices involve telphone-answer- ing. filing, answering questions, aiding visitors in any way possible, and general errand-running. Most guidance assistants concern themselves with “running for students with whom the counselors wish to speak. The attendance office is yet another significant area of student help. Here, records of absences are kept and students are issued excuses, permitting return to classes follow- ing absences. Infirmary aids maintain records of students and their reasons for visiting the in- firmary. Additionally, the aids assist the school nurse in administering to injuries and sickness and in checking sight, weight, and height during the yearly examination. The cafeteria is maintained under The school furnace is kept up by Mr. the capable hands of Mrs. Le- Matthews, the custodian. Compte. Traffic Committee: Standing: Bill Smith. F.T.A. Develops Teaching Interests Cradock’s Future Teachers of Amer- ica has led an active year. Providing coffee and doughnuts for new teachers and acknowledging teachers’ birthdays throughout the year with small gifts were some of the thoughtful remembrances supplied. Club spirit was evidenced by a Homecoming float and by a sign com- memorating National Education Week. More important among activities were three district meetings, one of which was held at Cradock in which the Cradock Chapter participated. Becky Ditter was among the delegates to a state conven- tion, and there she ran for office. The F.T.A. Clinic constituted an interesting and informative “swap-shop” where ideas were exchanged with other schools. To recognize Teacher Career Month, junior and senior club members taught for one day in area schools. Also, during the course of the year, members were allow- ed to substitute teach whenever called upon. An arrangement exists among community and public high school business, in- dustrial, and professional establishments for furnishing to students part-time em- ployment during school hours. In this endeavor, Cradock furnishes necessary technical information related to the occupations. A controlling objective of this program is the provision of instruc- tion for high school juniors and seniors to enable them to be well-prepared for em- ployment in a trade identical or closely allied to the one in which they have been trained. I Keeping the student body informed of all happenings at Cradock is the function of the Shipmate staff, sponsored by Mrs. Jane Glazer and co-edited by Liz Carter and Eddie Agricola. Producing a news- paper, issued at six-week intervals, requires the combined and concentrated efforts of all journalism students. Co- operation is paramount in the planning of page layouts. To report interestingly, con- cisely, and accurately is the goal of all staff members. This year the Admirals have enjoyed a factual and informative Shipmate. As a bonus, a senior issue, con- taining a Senior Special of news, was published; items such as class song, poem, and history, college choices, and baby pictures were featured. Sup- ported by cheerleaders and enthusiac rooters, the men of the gridiron bravely confronted all opponents with typical Cradock drive. The opening game against Deep Creek, a loss by one touchdown, was Cradock’s first defeat by Deep Creek in four years. To compensate for this, i Cradock triumphed over the Oscar Smith I Tigers in a rousing 38-7 Southeastern District match with quarterback Earl Chinn the leader in passing and rushing. In the fourth game of the season, the Admirals enjoyed their traditional victory i over Granby by overcoming 1 10 yards in penalties with the aid of Chinn’s passes to Darrell Parsons and Don Ballard, one of the district’s fastest guards. The Bay- side game was Cradock’s second consecu- tive win with David Umberger leading in touchdowns and yardage gains. The game against Norview, though a loss for the Admirals, was highlighted by Chinn’s preventing the Pilots from scoring until the last quarter. Ballard completed the longest play by receiving a 48-yard pass i from Chinn, a leading districk quarter- ' back. The following game, Cradock versus Churchland, was a stirring 31-13 victory in which Chinn, John Hale, and Willie Dunlow starred. Eliot’s quote, “What is the meaning of the city? Do you huddle close together because you love each other?” The band provided entertainment. Awards and scholarships were presented by Mr. T.W. Gray, the principal of Cradock. Next came the anticipated moment of the evening. Mr. Gray, with the help of Mr. R.E. Byrd, assistant principal, awarded diplomas to the graduating seniors of 1968. No longer were they Cradock High School students. Their lives had ended here only to begin some- where else. However the memories, footsteps, and hand- prints of each individual still haunt the halls and rooms of Cradock High School. Prior to Commencement exercises, graduating seniors file onto the field and take their positions. Mr. Booker presents to Di- ane Dodd the Balfour Award, a scholarship for citizenship, loyalty, and achievement. S.C.A. President Bill Smith receives a good citizenship metal from former principal, Mr. J.J. Booker, Jr. 219 Speeches Reflect the Seriousness of Life After Graduation “What is the meaning of the city? Do you huddle close together because you love each other?” This quotation, a paragon of conciseness by British poet T.S. Eliot, served as the theme for the 1968 graduation. Class president Beau Light was master of ceremonies. Facing the western side of the stadium crowded with observers, four speakers pre- sented their topics relating to Eliot’s quote. Valedictorian Phyllis Doughtie first attempted to answer the query, “Where is the wisdom we have lost in knowledge?” Follow- ing Class Attorney Bill Harrell delivered his message by asking “Where is the knowledge we have lost in informa- tion?” S.C.A. President Bill Smith expounded the values of quality citizenship with “Have you built well? Have you forgotten the cornerstone?” The theme of Commence- ment was further pursued by salutatorian Steve Caminer’s developing “What life have you if you have not life together?” Graduation exercises indeed marked a mile- stone and a turning point as well in the lives of 212 robed seniors. The present is a time to be built upon with past experience in the assurance of a well-constructed future. As evening breezes enveloped participants and on-lookers with an air of solemnity, the acute realization of life’s up- heaval was intensely impressed upon the seated students. But underneath the pseudo-turmoil and change flowed a current of calm constancy. Commencement is a series of memorable occurrences, each as an Incunabulum in the life of the one experiencing it. As present sadness foresaw future joy, new Cradock High School alumni formed a climactic recessional.
