In the future years these experiences will fade away to vague images; therefore, we, the staff of the 1966 Admiral, have tried to capture a vivid record of all that occured this past year which we will always love and cherish most. We present this record to you as we have viewed Cradock by Day and by Night. yl A eh’cs Jeaiures 3 Uhe Spoi i ii SAines On Mr. Patrick Blake C pprecialion O Jfis JKanp Services Walking through the halls of Cradock, we as Seniors, have associated with him as an English teacher, as a dramatic instructor, as a counselor, and as a personal friend. Mr. Blake received his B.A. degree upon grad- ating from Fairmont State College. After teaching at Woodrow Wilson High School, he embarked on his teaching career at Cradock. His guidance has shown a deep understanding of youth, and has provided an example of such worth, that as we venture forth from these walls, our goals are elevated by his example. He has in- stilled in us a love of drama, wit, and laughter. As we look back on all the things he has given us, we deem ourselves fortunate to have known him. We the Senior Class want the world to know, This was a man! Monday in Study hall — What a wild weekend thot was! There is a destiny which makes us brothers; none goes his way alone. Tomorrow is far away but time creeps on and one must have a plan. Side-by-side with his friends — or alone — the individual stands whether thinking, work- ing, playing — always retaining his dignity, keeping his own counsel, thinking solitary thoughts. In doing so, then, and only then, shall we find the formula to peace and happiness in our success. Let us live in a house by the side of the road and be a friend to men. In the Arts . . . These reports indicate that 50% of all mar- ried people are women. J auin raue ecf . . . The year was 1961-62; the largest eighth grade class to date made its entrance into Cradock High School, Feeling somewhat insignificant, we began to organize our class. Under the leadership of Mrs. Pollard we elect- ed our class officers: Debbie Atkinson, Francine Harmon, Leon Houston, Andy Stampley. We were well represented on the Student Council by Steve Ellis, Richard Cesler, Sally Williams, and Susan Biggers. The following year we returned but the confidence we gained over the summer quickly vanished as Seniors re- minded us we were nothing but lowly Freshmen. As in previous years, at the beginning of school, the halls of Cradock resounded with the declaration of love for Seniors. We elected as class officers Chris Grigas, Sam Jessel- son, Susan Biggers, and Leon Houston, and as class sponsors, Mrs. Malcolm and Mr. Blake. At Homecoming we were especially proud to be representated by Debbie Atkinson. The work of Donna Armstrong and her committee helped our first prom to be a truly Enchanting Evening. Representing us on the S. C. A. that year were Donna Bene, David Lawrence, Steve Ellis, and Linda Bailey. When the Miss Cradock Contest was held, our class was again in the spotlight with the selection of Debbie Atkinson as Maid of Honor. Having progressed from the ranks of lowly rats, we gained new dignity as Sophomores. We began greater participation in all phases of school activities. Our class officers were Andy Stampley, Betty Shuler, Diane Stegall, and Leon Houston. Class sponsors were Miss Liddle and Mr. Carroll. Representing us on the Student Council were Donna Bene, Marty Coleman, Chris Grigas, and Nana Harris. Representing us in the Homecoming festivi- ties that year was Donna Armstrong. Prom Chairman Chris Grigas and her committee began work on the prom, Midnight Rendezvous. In the Miss Cradock Contest distinction was brought to our class when Debbie Atkinson was again chosen Maid of Honor. In the spring many individual class members brought special distinction to our class. Pat Black, Ronnie Vance, Penny Hedge, and Mike Booth made All-State Chorus. Ike Sherlock, voted most valuable wrestler at school, won the state championship for his weight class. Returning to school in 1964, we were prepared for all the prestige and responsibility involved in attaining the status of an upperclassman. Again lead by Andy Stampley and other officers Donna Armstrong, Diane Stegall, and Sam Jesselson, we began our varied activi- ties. Our sponsors were Miss Bryant and Mr. Rollins. In Homecoming we were well represented by Chris Grigas. Our Student Council representatives for that year were Nana Harris, Chris Grigas, Donna Bene, and Fran- cine Harmon. The arrival of our class rings on the day of the Jr.- Sr. prom made May 1 4th the most eventful day of the year. The work on the decorations was somewhat hamper- ed by the glitter of our new rings. Nevertheless, Chris Grigas and her able committee transformed the gym into an authentic Show Boat. Fully aware that we were practically the ultimate in superiority when we returned to school in 1965, we de- cided to exert that superiority on those horrid rats. We chose Rod Wade to lead our class. Other officers were Mike Walls, Donna Armstrong, Betty Shuler, and Chris Grigas. Mrs. Morgan was our sponsor. We felt great pride by the confidence placed in our class with the election of Sam Jesselson as President of the S. C. A.; Chris Grigas as Secretary; and Francine Harmon as Treasurer. For our last homecoming the Senior class thrust its efforts into the building of the prize-winning caterpillar float. To add a special touch to the Homecoming cere- monies Chris Grigas was elected Homecoming Queen. The second semester passed all too quickly as we re- hearsed for the Senior play, prepared for the banquet, prom, baccalaureate, and finally graduation. Though many of us were elated at the prospects of graduation we could not forget our five years at Cradock and the many memories they created. We all hoped that during those five years we had prepared ourselves well for all that life would bring in the future. Signed, sealed, and delivered by HERB BING, class lawyer, 1966. Class Lawyer — Herb Bing 63 I3eaue- a£in If we loved it or if we didn ' t, it is gone. If we relished and savored every minute of the last twelve years, or If we only wished fervently that tomorrow would come, still it is gone. Irretrievably, which means we can ' t get it back, and Irreparably, which means we can ' t change it, and I rreplacably, which means, why do we want to? We should have stopped nine months ago — nay, four years ago — to remark on the fleetness of time and the lateness of the hour. But we can ' t stop time; it has to go on and on and on, breaking its neck to get where it ' s going; leaving us breathless . . .and grown up. Heaven knows we were happy here; Heaven knows we can never live again what we are living today the way we are living it now. But we have done as much growing as people can do in one place; and room must be made for the many others to be educated here. We will leave, and no matter how often we return, we can never belong again. For to us, Cradock High School will no longer be an educational institution but a state of mind, a treasured set of memories. Those memories are being made today. But in spirit, not one of us will really be gone. Too mony memories will linger forever in our hearts and our minds. In the years to come our minds and hearts will drift back to these halls, these rooms, this auditorium. And in our memories there will be a man in one of these places. That man is at the top of the mast. Admiral of the fleet, Mr. Booker. We will never forget his warm and reassuring welcome to us as eighth graders. Lost in the massive halls of Crodock, we saw him as the light to guide the way. He was always there to flash a smile ond a friendly hello; there to lend us o helping hand in our adjustment. To cheer the team on to victory and to ease the little pains of defeat, he was there. The top cheer- leader at pep rallies, he wielded his megaphone with the best of them, shouting Rah! Rah! Rah! Rah! Rah! We will never forget our surprise and delight when Mr. Booker, the swinger, let us dance at the con- clusion of an assembly — in front of Mr. Godwin, too! Mr. Booker ' s many lectures on getting good grades and not getting married are fond memories, too, now, liedicaiion J FRIEND . . . SPORTSMAN . . . because we know he was right all the time. We realize now that he only wanted the best for us. Students are hard-headed. Perhaps Seniors are a little more so. But Mr. Booker knew and he under- stood. Even when he was lecturing us about something we had done wrong, we could see that little quirk of a smile on his lips and then we knew he had forgiven us. At times, school days with Mr. Booker were a little hectic, but looking back, we enjoyed every minute of it. Spring came a little late in 1965. Mr. Booker wished us a Happy Easter the day before Thanks- giving. We will always remember the confusing regular assembly schedule and those famous words uttered from Mr. Booker ' s lips, It ' s not how you play the game that counts, but whether or not you win. He always gave us every opportunity to prepare ourselves for the wide, competitive world outside. From the bottom of our hearts, we thank him, not only for his guidance, but for just being, our Mr. Booker. Perhaps it is best that we take our leave now. Cradock will never be the same without our own Mr. Booker — reprimander, swinger , ond friend. A first for the Junior Class was the entrance of a class float in the homecoming parade. We, the class of ' 69, owe to Crodock High School o year filled with excitement, adven- ture, and spiritual inspiration. We also owe a successful year to our class president, Mary Lee Ballard, our hard work- ing class officers and our faithful sponsor. Miss Peake. Thus being indebted to so many for such a wonderful year, we can only repay them by promising to continue and carry out the Cradock Way, morally, spiritually, and physically. J, Booker, Jr. T)ecficaijion No society has hod the wonderful oppor- tunities afforded the people of this gen- eration. We ore living in o dynamic and changing world. Atomic energy and scien- tific discoveries have opened new vistas unthought of a generation ago. Today fifty percent of the articles found in stores were not available ten years ago and just ten years from now fifty percent of the people will be doing work unknown today. Knowl- edge is doubling at the unprecedented rate I of eight to ten years. Such rapid changes have tremendous implications for all, especially our youth. No longer can we be content with merely completing high school but must further our education in colleges and technical schools. Learning is a continuous thing and should be pursued during our entire lives. Education is the key to building a better society only if accompanied by spiritual and moral values. We wish for each senior a full life in which each of the above takes its rightful place. Sincerely, I J. J. Booker, Jr. I I J. J. Booker, Jr. — Principal University of Richmond, B.S. Since all but one was new, both a junior and senior editor were chosen. Quickly initiated into the world of journalism, the students thrilled to the discovery of the con- stant activity lying behind Cradock ' s calm facade. A bright October sun shone down on A Land of Make-believe as students rushed to finish decorating club floats. As two o ' clock approached people lined the streets of Cradock to make their choice as to which float was best. After the parade the Alumni were en- tertained at a reception and Banquet. A Prom involves a lot of work . . . . . . and problems. Janiasia March 19th proved to be o memorable night for the Freshmen, Sophomores, and their guests. The cafeteria was tranformed into the elegance of SHAN- GRI-LA. Under the leadership of Mr. Carson and Miss Peake the prom committee captured the true atmosphere of the Orient by using a rickshaw serving table, fortune cookies, murals representing Japanese silken screens, and Japanese lanterns. As Confucius would say, “most honorable prom was huge success, and those attending would answer, “Ah So! But the end product is worth all the trouble. A funny thing happened on the way to the Junior- Senior Prom, FANTASIA, — well, actually it happened after arriving at the prom. From outside you could hear the lovely melodies of The Continentals. Upon entering the castle wonderland, huge mushrooms and murals of flowers and fairy kingdoms greeted you. The ceiling was blanketed in blue clouds just dark enough to please the dancers and not so dark as to displease Mr. Booker. Everything was heaven for everyone, everyone, that is, except the annual photograher. The staff had such beautiful hopes for a double page spread on the Junior- Senior Prom. But, alas, our skilled photographer forgot to push a button or something when he changed the film, and the entire evening produced only four pictures. The staff was extremely worried that The people ate . . . these pictures might mislead some students by the story they imply: The band played. The people danced. The people ate. The people danced. Because we do not have pictures of how lovely FANTASIA was, we wanted you to know that everything was beautiful and truly a night to remember. In fact, contrary to the way some of the dancers look, everyone was happy. The band played happily. The people danced happily. The people ate happily. The people danced happily. The annual staff, on the other hand, smiled bravely as they received only four pictures. If a man answers was a swinging senior class play. Dressing room — Play night! 1966 — what a year. We as Seniors had a lot of fun that year, a lot of good times that we won ' t soon forget. . . . . . . like the time Mr. Carson demanded from a surprised Linda Bailey the bottle of hair grower she promised him in the Last Will and Testament. Mr. Westler did the same thing to Nancy Sawyer, only he had been promised 390 Mondays to give tests on. Was his first period ever mad when he tried to collect! . . . and the time Pat Black was thrown into the pool at Janett McNeely ' s party, an impromptu ducking with all her clothes on. . . . Lois Jacobs will never forget the time her stockings fell to her ankles in the main hall, nor will Chris Grigas forget her tumble downstairs in the auditorium in front of the whole football team. Suzy the Goat gave everybody a rough time; besides nibbling on the cheerleaders ' pompoms (and Donna Armstrong ' s skirt) at critical moments dur- ing football gomes, she — er — lost control of her- self in the auxiliary gym during the senior as- sembly. Any gym teacher can tell you where she was tethered. That same day the seniors took off for Red ' s during first period and returned to find Mr. Book- er waiting at the main door with a paddle in his hand and a grin on his face — and a warm hand- shake for each of us. There was the day Marty Keesecker ' s lovely antique automobile shifted under the weight of seven surfboards and cracked the window in Mr. Byrd ' s office; the day the Log staff was caught sniffing glue, which wasn ' t so bad except that Mrs. Boswell was pushing goofballs on the side; the day Elaine Wilson got caugKt smuggling cokes up to the annual staff room in her little red bucket . The annual staff always had a good time, playing hopscotch, pic-up-sticks, monopoly, cards — anything they could find except work. Mike Boothe tried to recall the funny times in chorus and finally sighed, Ah, the whole thing was a joke. Spectators won ' t soon forget watching Andy Stampley do the bird with Miss Fitzgerald at the Prom, nor will Andy forget the sinking feel- ing he got realizing that he was marching by him- self — in perfect time — at one end of the field while the rest of the band was at the other during a football game. Sam Jesselson promised Mr. Mapp a lifetime prescription to the Log . . . Jimmy Spinelle sent Mrs. Boswell a cartoon that reminded him of Moby Dick and a disconcerted Log staff member noted that it had been cut out of Playboy magazine . . . Gina Pittman and Butch Schodt are co-tutoring Mrs. Bruce; they are more than quali- fied after the impromptu French lessons they re- ceived during Senior class play rehearsals . . . Mr. Westler ' s classes just couldn ' t keep him off those pills; after a particularly hard week-end, he would ask questions and forget them before the answers were given . . .
