Freshman initiations, the football games, the club activities, and the dances are buried deep with the name of Cradock in our hearts. As we think of our last prom, our last homecom- ing, and our graduation, we remember with highest pride our four years at Cradock. And as we depart from these well loved halls we shall forever hold dear these, Portholes of the Past . -•SA s?6,?0 A r r A A ' comeiis Organizations Features Ads Administration Classes 6 1 f I We Pay MR. J. J. BOOKER, JR. We, the Senior Class of 1961, with deepest pride dedicate our Admiral to Mr. J. J. Booker. He who has worked long and hard to give the students of Cradock the best has earned the highest in respect and admiration from all who know him. Even though we leave the halls of Cra- dock we shall forever remain greatful for the helping hand of Mr. Booker. So in humble appreciation we pay tribute to Mr. Booker, our principal. The expression, One picture is equal to a thousand words, is apt in that a high school annual is concerned. The staff of the Admiral has tried to give a pictorial report of the main events of the school year 1960-61. We think they have done an excellent job in this respect. Expression of gratitude is appropiate for those who worked untiringly in their effort to make this publication a success. In order for any undertaking to be successful, co- operation of the entire student body is nec- essary. For each of you who purchased this yearbook, thanks. We know you will be rewarded by the many happy hours you spend in recalling these the most pleas- ant years of your life. — And just think how fine it will be to show your children what a big shot you were when in high school. Senior Class Poem 1961 Senior Class Song 1961 As we meet our new horizons, Let us ne ' er forget our past. Let the knowledge we have gained here, In our lives forever last. May our future lives be richer What e ' er our goals may be, For we owe our inspiration, Dear Cradock High, to thee! The future calls me and so I go; Though I know not all that I must know. I dream and think What shall I be? A leader of men? A captain at sea? My end is uncertain upon this sod, But I shall persist with faith in God. One aim I ' ll keep through out my quest To strive each day to do my best. My talents I shall use in all that is done So that even in losing I know I ' ve won. The world I ' ll command without defeat, Through love and understanding of people I meet. I shall spend my life on goals so high That they will live on even after I die. Sally McDuffie, Poet Michael Hester Marv Lindsev Hoffler 68 Senior Class History We, the senior class of 1961, have come a long way since entering high school in Septem- ber, 1957. Four short years ago, although we tried not to show it, we looked up to the mighty seniors who forced us to carry books and to empty trays. After Initiation Week we began to organize our class. We elected Judy Sims, president; Buddy Hornick, vice president; Shir- ley Hayes, secretary; and J. R. Wilburn, treas- urer. Our able advisors were Mrs. R. Adams and Mr. W. Cox. We worked especially hard on our first high school prom, Stardust.” In our sophomore year, we elected Shortie Kay, president; Wayne Waff, vice president; Nellie Houston, secretary; and Buddy Hornick, treasurer. Our sponsors, Mrs. E. Bruce and Mr. P. Blake, gave our class guidance and we began to take school a little more seriously. We were very proud when Carole McCr eary was selected Maid-of-Honor in the Miss Cradock Contest, and Lee Smith was chosen Best Actor for his performance in Mounie ' s Kid Don ' t Cry. Our prom, Mardi Gras , was a big success. As juniors, we realized that we were upper classmen. Our class officers were John Casteen, president; Buddy East, vice president; Martha Barnes, secretary; and Sonny Richardson, treas- urer. Mrs. Heath and Mr. Wade assisted us in our endeavors. Again Carole McCreary was selected Maid-of-Honor in the Beauty Contest and Lee Smith was chosen Best Actor for his performance in Jenny Kissed Me. Other members of our class also brought honor to Cradock High School that year. Mary Hoffler was elected vice president of the State Future Teachers of America. John Casteen won the Virginia State Debate championship and re- ceived the Jeffersonian Gravel Award from the University of Virginia. He also attended the U. N. Pilgramage. Nellie Houston and Kay Nance attended the S.C.A. National Convention. The biggest event of our junior year, besides re- ceiving our rings, was giving the seniors a prom to remember. Everyone had a wonderful time at Tropical Paradise. When we became seniors, we did not feel as mighty as we had expected, but the under- classmen did not know this because we really enjoyed the long-waited for pleasure of initiat- ing freshmen. We were very pleased that Sammy Dunston was our Student Council president and- Penny Jones was our Student Council secretary. Our class officers were John Casteen, president; Sonny Richardson, vice president; Roberta Gib- son, recording secretary; and Shirley Hayes, cor- responding secretary. Miss Byrd and Mrs. Bruce were given the task of serving as class sponsors. At our last Homecoming, Sammy Dunston and Kay Nance reigned as King and Queen. Wayne Waff was chosen as All American and Larry Weldon was picke d as All State. Bobby Edmunds received the Outstanding Science Student award. Bob Stampley was the editor of the Shipmate and Martha Barnes was the editor of the Log. The Admiral , edited by Sally McDuffie, was dedicated to our wonderful principal, Mr. Booker. After mid-term exams, the Valedictorian and Salutatorian were announced. Then there was the Student-Faculty basketball game, the Senior Class play, Senior banquet, Baccalaureate, and, finally, Graduation. Our senior year was, indeed, our happiest and busiest year. As we received our diplomas we realized how much we had grown to love Cradock. It was in this school that we had made so many, many, friends; but now each would be going his own separate way into the world. As we left Cradock for the last time, we knew that we were well prepared for a very demand- ing future. Shirley Hayes Class Historian junior Class This year the Junior Class of Cradock has experienced an honor never received by a Junior Class in this school before. Because we were no longer part of the Norfolk County School System we were allowed to hove a different class ring. After long debate and deliberation we chose a design and we are very proud of it. That is not the only thing cur class is proud of this year. We were very pleased with the outccme of our Junior-Senior Prom. It was one we will long remember. Our class has also participated in many school projects as well as our own. Wilburn, plus the fine running of Fullback Eddie House Coach Russ Moon did a fine job with the line, that never ceased to improve. Billy Brett, Randy Lewis, Tommy Presnell, Bobby Lee, and Eddie Eaves were the bulk of the line, opening gaps for the swift halfbacks, Gordon, Phillips and Earl Freeland to slide through. Improvement played a larger part on de- fense where it was needed most. With the help of Mr. Charles Brown, Admiral scout, Cradock made marked improvement in de- fense. The Lee twins, Bobby and Johnny, Billy Brett, Buddy Hornik, J. R. Wilburn, and Wayne Waff composed the front line. They were backed by line backers; Gordon Barnes, Jackie Morris, and Donnie Rose. The deep men, Ray Workman and LeRoy Curtis at halfback and Allan Baker at safety compiled the best pass defense record in the district. Mr. Charles Wade, a newcomer to the coaching staff, coaches tennis, 8th grade football, and basketball. He par- ticularly likes jazz and classical music, good food, and intelligent people. His only dislike is hypocrites. His favorite personality is Bob Hope. Though he is new at Cradock he has already ac- quired a nick name of Shot Gun , so called in honor of his famous shot gun tests. Supports Of Sports Mr. Russel Moon, the little man on the staff, graduated from V.P.I. on the Dean ' s list. He has played football, basketball, wrestling, and track, in high school and in college. Not only does he like Semi-Clas- sica! music but he also helped write his Senior Class Song. Ho,n= — hS must De 0 dvor ce. fide Admiral Honors Wayne Waff The Admiral would like to honor Wayne Waff for his outstanding record in football. Wayne has been named on the All-Portsmouth, All-Tidewater, All-State, All-Southern, and fin- ally the All-American football teams. These are quite distinguished honors and it is the first time a Tidewater athlete has been named to the No. 1 All-American high school team, se- lected by the Wigwam Wiseman of America. This Cradock High senior, 209 stretched over 6-6, is quite obsessed with speed, which is unusual in such a tall boy. In running, Wayne is as good as he is persistent. He is the fastest wind sprint man on the Cradock Track squad and is also outstanding in the mile relay, the 440, and in the broad jump. Wayne is an outstanding basketball player. Wayne comments, Basketball isn ' t my game, but I like it because you ' re doing something all the time and you get a chance to run. How- ever, Wayne is better than a journeyman bas- ketball player. He was the No. 5 pointmaker in the Eastern District last year and he was also fifth in the league in rebounds. However, football is Wayne ' s specialty. He scored eight touchdowns and a dozen extra points last autumn, the state ' s 14th Group 1 -A scorer and the leading pointmaker among the ends. And, of course, he has been first team on every All-Star unit named. He led the Vir- ginia High School League in pass catching last season, snagging 35 for 51 1 yards and seven touchdowns in leading the Admirals to a 7-1 record. In spite of his many honors, Wayne has re- tained his modesty and genuine friendliness. His smile is large, frequent, modest, and most genuine. And because of these admirable traits Wayne has been voted the Most Popular boy in the senior class. So, to this most versatile athlete we would like to say, We ' re not only proud of you — but we also like you. V- ORGflnizeTions r rjg| dj Penny Jones Secretary Janice Hammond Vice President Sammy Dunston President (5fie Student The Student Council started the ball rolling this year even before the opening of school by treating the faculty to a coke party. The first dance of the year, the Back to School Dance , came with the opening of school. Other back to school activities included the selling of activity tickets, the first assembly, Big Brother Day to welcome new students, and the setting up of the new school year ' s objectives which are as follows: 1. To make our building and grounds more beautiful and to preserve the original beauty thereof. 2. To aid other organizations within the school in the carrying out of worthwhile activities with special attention to the im- provement of the club program. 3. To create and to stimulate within the student body a greater interest in and ap- preciation of the available cultural activi- ties within both the school and the sur- rounding community. 4. To promote a better relationship and understanding between the student body and the surrounding community through practical community service. 5. To emphasize honor, high moral standards, and ethical practice in every phase of student life. The Council immediately started to work to meet these objectives through such projects as the mock presidential elections, Honor Roll parties, Eighth Grade elections, Teachers ' Day, Christmas Welfare Project, Mistletoe Hop, Color Day, Beauty Con- test, Honor Week, the Community Chest and March of Dimes drives and many others.
