These memories were formed in four years at Cradock High. In our minds will be the facts that college teachers and future em- ployers will wantg in our hearts are the feelings, the recollections, and the love which we associate with our Cradock High. Nowhere can we go that will let us forget the Freshman initiation, when we thrilled with pride as a mighty' Senior said, you! get on your knees! That pride came to us the moment we walked into the halls our Freshman year and it has never left us. We want to express this pride and the love we all feel for our Alma Mater in a tribute to and collection of Cradock Memories , The 1959 Admiral. ber, 1 9 5 5, during Freshman Initiation Week. She is a person who has done much for Cradock High School and for its students throughout the years. Miss Weaver is always ready to help unfortunate students and to lend a helping hand to anyone at any time even though it might in- convenience her. She has sponsored the National I-Ionor Society and the Varsity Cheerleaders for a number of years. She often goes beyond the call of duty and thereby earns the admiration of all. We, the 1959 Class, will long remember Miss Weaver because of her unfaltering trust in Cradock students and unwavering loyalty to Cradock High School. 11 if 7 5 X l, 1 f' 1. Your real worth will be measured by the yardstick of service and production. May your abilities be realized to their full expres- sion. We make our country stronger by streng- thening the lives of students. Ours is a won- derful heritage of liberty, freedom, and op- portunity. We enjoy these privileges at Cradock. This book will bring an abundance of plea- sure and many wonderful memories to those who participated in this portion of Cradock's history. Its pages will enable you to recall classmates and acquaintances, the ex- periences, the activities, the honors, which enriched your lives while at Cradock. I know that the class of 1959, and those of the future, will continue to carry Cradock's significant contribution to the life of their community and state. Mr. J. J. Class Song , b W , Wi, wif, 381 i fi ,Qs twig as ff f of we I fills The time draws near when we must part From you, dear Cradock High, It is with fondest memories We soon must say goodbye. We 1'emember all the joys we've known The guidance and friendship we've gainedg We think of Cradock with all love and pride Within our hearts contained. Cradock, we can never forget Our four years in your halls But though we remember them always We must go where the future calls Well armed with truth and knowledge dear We go forward to meet life's tests Boldly we face what ever may come Eager to do our best. Class Poem I looked into the future days But little could I seeg I looked into the days behindg A perfect Memory. And so I stepped on board the ship Which bore me 'cross the sea And as my guiding star I took That Perfect Memory. That Memory gained from years of work Of Work, and years of fun. A star can't guide unless by years Of both, it has been won. My ship was tossed for days on end And yet I saw my star To guide me from this tempest, on To reach the shore so far. The shore I'll reach when life is past, 'Til then I watch the sky. I dare not look 'way from that star- -Mem'ries of Cradock High. Kathy McGinnis, Class Poet. Cui' Class History - Historian-Charlotte Lupton We, of the graduating class of 1959, look back on our four years at Cradock High with unceasing joy and devotion to the school which we have called home . And it is true that Cradock has been our home ever since that first day in September four years gao when we, as frightened freshmen, took our first faltering steps into these hollowed halls of C.H.S. Do you know what it's like to be awe- struck '? Well, we do! We remember our first high school assembly and how we were lost in the won- der of it. We remember Orientation Week when we shined shoes and carried books just for a kind word from those mighty Seniors. And we remem- ber how our arms ached from carrying those two loads of books and how we almost never got all the black polish from under our fingernails. However, the wonder of those first few days soon wore off and we plunged headlong into our high school career. We held our first class meet- ing early in September and elected Charles Porter, President: Kathy McGinnis, secretary: Charles Henkle. vice-president: and John McDuffy, treas- urer. Our first S.C.A. representatives were Barry Dail, Carolyn Hall, B. B. Hamaker and Charles Porter. Our freshman class sponsor was Miss Cora Mae Fitzgerald. Yes, at last we were in high school, and so, eager to have our talents recognized, we plunged into all Activities. Our Freshman-Sophomore Prom, Out of This World , was simply wonderful, and we were very proud when Carol Taylor was elected Maid of Honor in the Beauty Contest. As sophomores we lost the awe of our freshman year and settled down to make a name for our- selves. No one can know how we felt when our B. B. Hamaker led the Fighting Admirals to one of their best seasons with seven wins and three losses. Helping to make our Sophomore class one of our best was Charlse Porter, president: Marion Carroll, vice-presidentg Betty Lou Gwaltney, secre- taryg and John McDuffie, treasurer. Our sponsors, Mrs. Bruce and Miss West, helped us make our Freshmen-Sophomore Prom a huge success. Our Junior year was almost tops. Once mo1'e Charles Porter was elected president and he was assisted by Marion Carroll, vice-presidentg Benny Kendrick, secretaryg and Bobby Spence, treasurer. The job of guiding our class was given to Mr. Jack Benzie, Miss Janice Cannon and Mr. Jim Mounie. We were very proud to have Isaac Cannon, treas- urer and Charles Porter, vice-president of the S.C.A. We applauded Betty Lou Gwaltney, our Junior As- sociate Editor of the Annual and Shirley Waite, Editor of the Log. We made great plans for the Junior-Senior and with Donna Wiggins and Sandra Marks as Prom chairmen we gave our all toward making our dance a success. We ordered our class rings and dreamed of our Senior year which was now very near at hand. Then, suddenly, we were seniors! At last we were high-man on the totem pole and with the return to school in September, we set out to make sure those wretched freshmen understood that we were tops and would remain so, unchallenged. We also recognized that with our seniority came responsi- bility. We were now school leaders and all the other classes looked to us as an example of CHS at its best. We chose our class officers early and settled down to guide, as best we could ,our beloved school. We elected Marion Carroll, president: Johnny Un- dewrood. vice-president, Janet Thompson, recording secretary: and Charlotte Lupton, corresponding sec- retary. Mr. Affeldt worked deligently with our home- room treasurers and once more our beloved Miss Byrd took the office of Senior Class sponsor. Our Annual Staff was led by Betty Lou Gwaltney find Shirley Waite continued her reign over The .og Scholastically we were tops for so We thoughtj and Warren Wood helped us to prove our point when he became the first Cradock student to enter the semi-finals of the National Merit scholarship exam. We cheered even louder when Kathy McGinnis won first glace on the Betty C1'ocker Homemaking Exam and t en, to top it off, Isaac Cannon and Charlotte Lupton won top prizes in the Youth Honor Day es- say contest. We were also very proud to have three members of our class hold offices in the SCA. Charles Porter was elected president: Donna Wig- gins, secretaryg and Bobby Spence, treasurer. Slowly the events slipped away-Freshman week, the Back-To-School Dance, Homecoming, the Fall play, Christmas, Basektball season. announcement of Valedictorian and Salutatorian. Baseball and Track. the Senior Class play- The Egg and I , the Miss Cradock Contest, Baby Day. the Junior- Senior Prom, The Senior Banquet, SCA elections and then-Exams. The final days of our senior year were full of wonderful, never-to-be-forgotten memories. More than one tear was shed during Baccalaureate and Graduation ceremonies. We found it hard to realize that we were no longer a part of Cradock High. As we stood together for the last time, we realized we were now approaching adulthood and we were very garteful for the school that had tried so hard to prepare-us for the long road of life ahead. Cradock had been more than just a schoolg it had been four years of our lives. And so, as we passed through its portals for the last time, our diplomas in hand, we knew we would always remember our wonderful carefree days at Cradock High. 55a unior Class ln- vs W Ken Dice, Junior Class President Ken Dice, class president, lc-fl the Junior Flash tliruuprli a very cvcntful year, The other ufi'icm-rs ul' the class were: Robert Janes, vicc-prcsiclentg Kay Prince, secretary: l.a1'ry VH-st, treasurer: Bennie Clllltbllll, 1'L'lllll'l0l'Q and Kicliarcl lluncycult, chaplain Our Homecoming Representatives were Janice De- Jarnette anrl Nicky Rheln. Mr. Weldon received his first big crack in coaching in professional football. Another fighter who is considered a line coach is the likeable Mac Eure. This is his third season as line coach. Besides being line coach Mr. Eure does the team scouting this year. Mr. Jack Benzie, who worked with the junior varsity and assisted Mr. Weldon with the varsity backfield is also a good coach for the Admirals. Mr. Benzie is a graduate of Wilson High School and East Carolina. Mr. Benzie played two seasons of varsity football at Wilson. At East Carolina he was a backfield regular for four years. The newest of our Admiral fighting coaches is Mr. Russell Moon. Mr. Moon re- placed Mr. Reggie Byrd as line coach. He was a standout lineman for two seasons at the Blacksburg Institution and his college performance earned him several pro offers. But Mr. Moon decided to enter the coaching field and was happy to land the Cradock coaching job. Out of the starting five of last year's Admirals three are back this year plus all but two reserves. This year's club is made up of five seniors including Tommy Odom, Merkie Varroll, Barry Dail, Jackie Lawson, and Glenn Griffin. Four juniors. Paul Rollins, Rich- ard Honeycutt, Lennie L'mberger, and Ed Perouni. Two sophomores, Wayne Waff, and Larry Weldon. One freshman, Jackie Morris. Coach Mac Eure has said that he expects more from this team than any team he has ever coached before. t'oach Eure said that this year's team has height, something that has hurt Cradock teams in the past. Over half the team is over six feet tall. Merkie Carroll and Rarrv Dail are being counted on heavily to score from the outside while Odom. Waff, Griffin, and Um- berger are expected to do the in- side work. Out of the twelve man squad ten were on the football team and five are lettermen. A new stepped- up program was begun in the summer when the Band Staff began organizing activities for the coming year. This program has been very successful so far. As usual the band performed at half-time for football games, but this year's shows were better than ever. The band put on jazz shows but showed an example of its ability to become serious when it thanked the band- parents. We were strutting in our new uni- forms a full year before the bandparents promised them to us. Only the hard work of these unselfish could have accomplished such a high goal. To help promote grandstand cheering, the band was proportioned down and for the first time we played at basketball games. We hope to continue this policy next year. The band is also going to have two annual concertsg the Christmas Concert and the Spring Concert. To top off the year at home, the band will have an annual banquet to award letters and pins. Of course the biggest event of the year will be the Annual Band Festival. Again this year we will be playing Grade 6 music which is the most difficult grade and we are striv- ing for top honors. Among the projects undertaken by the Shipmate this year are its first annual current events con- test and a special series of articles entitled, Know Your Local Government. 1959 has proved to be a successful year for the Shipmate and for the crew as well. This was due to the fine work of the following: editor-in-chief, Mary Ann Jeremeg page editors, Jane Lane, Mari- ane Church, Carolyn Smith, Judy Tarris, and Selba Morris: headline editor, Shorty Kay, art editor, Brad Boyntong sports editor, Gordon Phillips, and the typists, Nancy Boylan, Chan Poppel, and Marsha Ehoff. Although the crew of the Shipmate has put in long hours of writing, we have enjoyed every min- ute of it. Through co-operation given by our fellow students, we were able to publish a September issue equal in quality to the later issues even though the new staff had only one week to prepare it. We are also proud of Miss Jane Hix, sponsor, for assist- ing the crew in every way to help make our news- paper a success. . ..--fag-145' f' L......N 1 -V' 'MX -Q -- new W 1, ,, 1. Homecoming, the largest project undertaken by the stu- dent body during the school year, was ex- tremely successful in 1958. Along with all the traditional frolics of any homecoming, several new attractions were added. Work began two and one-half months prior to the big day. Committees were formed -- telephones began to ring as alumni from the classes of 1943, 1944, and 1945 were invited home for the reunion - thoughts and ideas began to assemble and the entire student body was in a buzz with enthusiasm. One of the most exciting events of our homecoming turned out to be the election of the King and Queeng CMelinda and Ron- nie Robinsonl a sister-brother team. This became another first in the history of Cradock High School. All of our preparations were climaxed with the actual day of performance. The procedure of presentation began with the annual parade through Cradock, followed by a banquet in honor of the alumni, the foot- ball game with Norview High Schoolg the crowning of the Royal Couple, and a dance. Many memories were made on November 7, 1958-memories that will never, ever stray from the treasured thoughts of our happier high school days. Queen, Melinda Robinson and King, Ronnie Robinson.
