In so doing we hope to express some part of the love, honor, and respect, we have for her. We thank her for her faith in us, her guidance, her lahors, and her love. Her presence here can never be overvalued. Her whole life is an inspiration and example, and association with her is a memory which we shall always cherish. ETS. YT - 1 5- 1 - . : . We were scared and quivering at the sight of the mighty Seniors at Supreme Court. Now laughingly, we remember the boys wearing tee shirts with ties and the girls with pincurls and no makeup, We, the fun- loving L'Rats with our leaders, l.innie Ritter, President: Arthur Branch, Vice-President: George Combs, Secretary-Treasurer: and Nancy Meiggs, Annual Representative, reached for high ideals. Our two wonderful sponsors, Miss Geraldine Neathery tnow Mrs. James Madigan! and Mr. Ed Austin lnow in the U.S. Armyl encouraged us. The s'Rats,' with their sister class, the Sophomores, surprised everyone by giving the first Freshmen-Sophomore Prom in sev- eral years. All of us beamed with pride when Freshman, Shirley Fisher was crowned Miss Cradock High. The inspiring presentation of the Francis Bellamy Flag Award by Mar- garette S. Miller to our Alma Mater is still dear to our hearts. As Sophomores the class settled down to serious study, looking forward to the future. Under the capable leadership of Melvin Olsen, President: Arthur Branch, Vice- President: George Combs, Secretary: Nancy Meiggs, Treasurer: and Jeanette Swain, An- nual Representative, we grew in knowledge and popularity. Our faithful Miss Neatherv and a new-comer, Miss Bowman guided us as sponsors. l mvfhlf so L , The third year of our precious High School career was filled with many accomplislnnents. After months of planning and working. we presented the ,lunior-Senior Prom at the Suburban Country Club on May 1, in honor of the Seniors. lt was a huge success for which the deserving Juniors received much praise. The captain of our winning ,lunior team was Linnie Ritter: co-captain was Mcl- vin Olsenz Brucie Hodges recorded the min- utes and Dinker', Pope kept the financial records in order. Our fine sponsors, Mrs. Betty Jane Yarborough and Mr. Bill Sind- linger led us to victory in every project we undertook. Then suddenly we realized that time was growing short as we ordered our Senior class rings and chose the Admiral and 'fShipmate staffs for the coming year. Then at last our dreams were fulfilled, we entered the Halls of our beloved Cradock as Seniors-fewer in number, but stronger in spirit and knowledge. Wie were taller and older, but if you looked close you could see the resemblance to that fun-loving group of Rats in our faces. Now as dignified Seniors we were led by Dinker Pope, President: Raymond Carson, Vice-President: Linnie Rit- ter, Secretary and Brucie Hodges, Treasurer. W'e chose Miss Evelyn Byrd as our sponsor. Her kindness and never ceasing efforts to Help us will be long remembered after graduation. In our hearts that last year together is a precious, never to be recaptured memory. We remember so vividly the enthusiasm of showing our class rings to everyone, cheering the football team to victory, posing for grad- uation pictures and the last minute studying the night before exams. The Senior Play, Our Town was a booming success under the direction of Mr. Sindlinger. With spring came Baby Day, the- Junior-Senior Prom and the never-to-be-forgotten Senior Banquet and all too soon we knew we would be parting. At the Baccalaureate service and Commence- ment our hearts told us that we had reached our first goal in life. Our beloved Cradock High. we will ever strive to make thee proud of the Class of 1954. Now, with our diplomas in our hands, tears in our eyes and a feeling of happiness and sadness in our hearts we make our finale. Farewell! Cradock was rated as one of the highest scoring teams in'the state, and although they were beaten, they were never held scoreless. The Admirals were victors over the New- port News Typhoons for the first time in Cradock football history. Especially outstanding was the hard hitting forward wall composed of: Bob Aydlette, Huey Burgess, Bob Hudson, C. L. Kessler, Ralph Hicks, 'sBunny Harmon, T. O. Wil- liams, and Delane Simpson. Showing up well in the backfield were: ace quarterback, W'alter Pope: fullback, Frank Mighty Mo W'ebster, Johnny Chap- man, Bob Clark, Bob Ryder, and Don Deaton. Bob Clark, fleeting halfback, won laurels for the Cradock team by coming in second in the state scoring race, while big bruising fullback, Frank Webster, also major yardage gainer, made both the Eastern District and All Tidewater Teams. Walter Pope, the Admiral quarterback, who was one of the leading passers in the state, threw 9 touchdown passes. Much credit should be given to the team's coaches for a splendid job done, coaching the Admirals during a successful season. Head coach is Larry Weldon and he was assisted by Henry Hambrecht and Rod Snelling, For outstanding sportsmanship, team spirit, and hard playing, Bob Aydlette and Frank Webster were elected co-captains of the Fighting Admirals of '53. They are not only chosen on their ability to cheer but their personality as well, The success of the ,l.V. cheerleaders is due to the complete cooperation of all the members of the squad and student body. There are certain rules and regulations that a J.V. girl must abide by, for when she is in uniform she knows that she represents her school and team and that she must conduct herself accordingly. A J.V. girl must work hard to stay on the squad and must respect the advice of the Varsity cheerleaders and the sponsors. Mindful that a good club is a working club, the club mem- bers sold drinks at basketball games, and in the Spring, they enjoyed the surf at Virginia Beach. l 2 . I Mrs. Yarlrorough - Sponsor . There should be a religious exercise at the beginning of every meeting. We promoted good fellowship through our acknowledgment of each other and other clubs. The high- lights of this play were the presentation of the best Actor and Actress awards, These were presented to George Combs and Ann Stevens. The Christmas vacation brought the much anticipated dances and parties. In January we came back from our vaca- tion happy and rested only to face our mid- term exams. Junior-Senior Prom 'MN ' The 1954 Junior-Senior Dance took place in the Suburban Country Club. Upon passing through 'the reeeiving line, the evening swung into a gala affair set to the pace- of ,lack U'Neill's fine band. The theme of hearts added eolor and a earefree feeling for all. Evi- dently this thought proved true. for during the evening several engagement, announcements were made, and be- fore long diamonds were really sparkling on the third fingers of very 4-xvitwl girls. As usual, when the band played Good Night Sweetheart. a wistful sigh could be heard from all the departing Seniors. Yes, May 28, will long be remem- bered as one of the brightest spots in our high school days.
