STENZEL Guidance Direcior DEDICATIO Mr. A. M. Stenzel, Guidance Director of Cradock High School, spent his early years in Monroe junior and Senior High School in Rochester, New York. He then attended Brock- port State Teachers' College and later received his B.S. degree from the Buffalo State Teachers' College, Buffalo, New York. ln 1936 he began his teaching career in a Long Island Elementary and Junior High School where he taught for five years. He moved to the principalship of a Sixth Grade School for a period of one year prior to his enlistment in the United States Navy in June of 1942. Mr. Stenzel's experience and qualifications rated the position of fitting experienced men to navy jobs under the navy classification program. In March 1946 he went to the Norfolk Division of Vllilliam and Mary and worked as a counsellor for college students and veterans. ln July of the same year he was married to Mildred Flemming, a graduate of Mary XVashington College and a teacher at Granby High School, Norfolk, Virginia. He went to Buffalo State Teachers' Colle e in the summer of 19-L7 for futher trainin . g g ln September 1947, he joined the faculty of Cradock High School. Since he has been in Cradock, he has helped many teachers and pupils with their various problems. This has brought about a better understanding and has drawn them closer together. ln his two years at Cradock High School he has been a great asset to the school and the faculty. He arranged the scheduling of all students to classes at the beginning ofthe year. His understanding manner has enabled students to solve educational, occupational, and personal problems. He has ordered catalogues from colleges for students and has checked their grades to see if they are good college material. During his two years on the faculty he has given mental maturity tests to the Seniors and for the First time, this year he gave these tests to the Juniors. Mr. Stenzel has scheduled and planned a Baby Sitting Course for the girls who were interested 111 the subject which turned out to be profitable to those who participated. He has scheduled many persons to give talks on after-school careers, in the field of Nursing and C alleges. In Mr. Stenzel's office, there is a complete library and file on every. kind of education than can be obtained and information concerning colleges and business schools. It is only possible to show a few of the highlights in Mr. StenZel's Cradock High School career. His past actions promise even greater achievements in the future. We, the Seniors ofthe 1949 Graduating Class, take pleasure in dedicating this edition of the annual to Mr. Alvin Milton Stenzel, Guidance Director of Cradock High School. K. ... H' f T Y Si' ri ' 1 r W .M.M ,wa . .'a as 2 x off- Wg ,Z 2 Theme INCE We live in a locality in which the third largest Navy Yard in the United States is established, and as approximately two-thirds of our parents are engaged in some type of Naval Work, we have chosen for the theme of The '49 Admiral, The Construction ol' a Ship. Most ol' us have grown up in the shadow of the Navy. Tn our families there are seamen, oliicers, or civilians, who either build or maintain ships. At some time or other, we have Watched the con- struction of a ship. Wle have seen the small, yet essential parts added to the framework in the drydock. The keel is layed. Then in order, the hull sides, the bulk-heads, and boulders are placed in their proper positions. The superstructure and quarters are among the elements to till the interior. Then, We may have seen the process of radar-power to see obstacles before reaching them. As We observe this ship being assembled, we notice how each Worker plays an important part. W'hether pipefitters, sheet metal workers, mechanics, electricians, or some other type of worker, the skill from each is necessary in perfecting a vessel capable of con- quering any adversary it may meet. In simple simile our lives are like the construction of that ship. In our first years of high school, we lay our foundation, We begin work on the ship We shall build as We pass through the ports of high school. Then comes our Junior year. As we inspect our ship We can see progress-progress on our ship's construction, andaprogress on our road of education. This is the time in which we must perfect the interior and mechanism on our still uncompleted vessel. Then, in the last year, our Senior year ol' high school, we paint, polish, and complete this Work which We have so nobly begun in earlier years. ,lune will bring forth the launching of our ship from the quiet of high school drydock into the troubled waters of the world outside. XVhether We will sink or Hoat depends greatly on our accomplish- ments during high schoolshow well We prepared ourselves-how We constructed our ship. ,nuff ss Biaiww su ua E , Q County Executives SCHOOL BOARD MR. Briefly Looking Back VVhile I was turning back the pages of time to find the history of this year's graduating class, a thought came to mind that the last four years may be compared to the seasons. In the happy, holiday, free summer we began our travel through the longest most memorable year of our lives. During this season and the next we were separated from many who are now our nearest and dearest friends, as many registered at Alexander Park. These young travellers did not choose leaders during their two-year stay at Alexander Park nor were they honored with a prom by their sophomore class when they were freshmen as was the class at Cradock. The theme of the lireshman-Sophomore Prom was St. Patrick's Day. The dance was given in the Cradock gymnasium. The Alexander Park freshmen did not have to suffer Supreme Court which gave them one advantage over us at Cradock who were caught like mfs in a trap. Cradock's summer leaders were: President, Henry Carterg Vice-President, Jack Leigh, Secretary, James Manserg Treasurer, Dysart CoNineg Sergeant-at-Arms, Dennis Viersg Sponsors, Mrs. Smith and the former Miss Lippard, now also a Mrs. Smith. During the fall four sophomore yearj our spirits fell as we realized since we were sup- posed to be adapted now to the new plan ofa different teacher and classroom for each subject, we were given responsibilities and restrictions. Wie were still separated from Alexander Park sophomores who this year managed to sponsor a Freshman-Sophomore Prom for their lower classmen in the Alexander Park gymnasium without customary election of ofiicers. However in Cradock leaders were again chosen: President, Joyce Overton, Vice-President, Peter Strange, Secretary, Pat Spear, Treasurer, Libby Brooks, Sergeant-at-Arms, Bruce Southerlandg Sponsors, Miss Bryant and Mrs. Forehand. Remembering how kind the sophomores had been to us at Cradock we sponsored a prom for our freshmen using as our theme Christmas and giving it in the Cradock auditorium. Then came winter. As juniors we did not get out much because this is the season of staying in and working if the future is to be smiled upon. As the juniors in all other years, we did not pay much attention to other classes, except we did give those seniors a Balloon Ball they would remember. The prom was held at the Petite Ball Room and this year the Nationals from Alexander Park were full faith Cradock Admirals, which made the occasion even more gala. The leaders elected this year were: President, Richand Ramsey, Vice-President, Eugene Cooper, Secretary, Libby Brooks, Treasurer, Sue Palmer, Sergeants-at-Arms, H. A. Keever and Henry Carter, Sponsor, Miss Duncan. As the hours change, so change the seasons and so came spring. Wie were mighty seniors, those travelling through the other seasons and our faculty instructors found us mighty, indeed-mighty bothersome. To command our due respect we did ruffle up the rats who were always underfoot, then as a peace offering we honored them with an exhibit of the procedures of Supreme Court. Those little camera-fiends got back at us on Senior Baby Day when we PROVED we were, oh! so dignihed! The seniors organized and presented for the graduation play the production VVho Killed Aunt Caroline? Shortly after, we were honored by the juniors with a prom given at the Suburban Country Club. For our spring leaders wre elected: President, Jim Anthony, Vice-President, Eugene Cooper, Secretary, ,loyce Overton, Treasurer, Joe McLendong Sponsor, Miss Byrd. Yes, spring is here and we are about to go through the seasons again as beginners in the summer of college, business, or other fields and for all of us there are new friends to win and new experiences to meet, all for the benefit and advancement of our knowledge. Spring is now drawing to its close and as the new sprouts on trees we branch to new fields with high hopes of becoming beautiful blossoms for all to see and admire. NORMA IVIAE GIBBS Poems and Songs OUR TOUR Beneath this common sky it lay- That is Cradock-our school-in which from day to day YVe garnered knowledge and built a frame For the things to come and our life's big aim. Our problems and hardships we learned to bear Yet were compensated in each affair For all that we tried and all that we gained We are proud to boast of our progress and fame. Mingled are feelings of folk we have known, Throughout the years their friendship has shone. Today we learn, tomorrow we lead, Has come to be our seniors' creed. 7 With goal now accomplished, we leave these scenes, Of youth and happy high school dreams, To face the world-severe and strong For we contain the ruling throng Destined to conquer and endure. To Seniors the Alma Mater seems to say more As it means the closing ofa quiet door The words tell ofjoy soon to be left behind, Of the teachers and friends so helpful and kind They tell of memories never to be lost, But for the future, we must pay the cost! ' We hate to leave but all through the years This song and tune will comfort our fears. The words will give courage and strength to each And help us as for a bright star we reach. FOOTBALL The Admirals greeted two new coaches this year in Head Coach Vernon Barnes and Assistant Coach Jack Thomas. For the first time in the school's history, the Admirals went into Group I standing. Although the Admirals did not have a very good season, they showed great spirit and were fighting all the way, whether they were winning or losing. The worst defeat handed the Admirals this season was by Churchland who de- feated the Barnesmen, 16-0. This was the first time the Truckers had defeated the Admirals in thirteen years. Slick Johnson, Jim Anthony, Earnest Price, and Eugene Cooper led the backfield for the 1948 season, while Buck Coffman, Eugene Worley, and Roy Griggs led the line. He is President of the Senior Class, President of the Presidents' Club, and is in the Mono- gram Club and a member of The Admiral Staff. Cradock's Basketball Admirals entered into Group I competition for the first time during the past season. The Admirals with only one returning letterman, reporting to Coach Jack Thomas last November, had to completely rebuild the varsity team. The future looks brighter For the 1949-50 season with the return of three starting varsity boys. The Admirals' won and lost column for the 48-49 season was not impressive, winning one conference game, while losing thirteen. The Admirals ended their season with four victories -and sixteen defeats. Sponsor The Student Council started the year off by setting up four important objectives which were to be the goal for us to work toward. The Hrst of these objectives was, To promote better school spirit through- out the school, by closer cooperation of students, teachers and the community. The first step toward achieving this was to provide for a special student section at the football games. This encouraged more enthusiasm among the spectators. Two school dances were sponsored by the S. C. A. and many clubs followed the example and gave several successful dances after the games. These were open to the community and were enjoyed by all. In order to improve our school, the Council decided the second objective should be, To beautify our grounds and buildings through the development of student responsibility for the care of public and private property. To bring the need for this objective before the student body, attractive bulletin boards were prepared and several skits were given in the assembly. A Clean- Up week was also sponsored. Last year, the Honor System was installed in our school. This being the first complete year of its operation, the third objective became To further the Honor sustem at Cradock. The members ofthe Honor Court are: Chairman, Edgar Lochstamphor, Secretary, Nina Lou Bright, Clyde Brennaman, Pat Abernathy, Dwayne Black, Linwood Buckner, and Bobby Smith. The sponsor is Mrs. Bruce. This system was explained in the annual handbook given to the students in the fall and several talks were given in assembly. The members also gave an interesting skit in assembly for that purpose. The fourth objective became one of great importance as the year passed on. It was, To cooperate with clubs in the carrying out of their programs. The club meetings are held during the activity period, so in order to help the membership, the Council set up the student supervision of the Activity Period. To discover the problems of the clubs, a survey was sent to all club presidents and sponsors, through the Presidents' Club, asking them to state their problems and offer any possible corrections. A student forum was also held in an as- sembly. Many suggestions were received and acted upon but the main prob- lem seemed to be a lack of monthly and yearly projects, so the Council started two school wide projects. The first one was in December. This was to pro- vide food, clothing and toys for the needy in our community. Many things were collected and each club donated something to help. The month of February was devoted to raising money for packages to be sent to Europe through the organization known as CARE. One hundred and fifteen dollars was collected and used to send two blanket packages, nine food packages, a seed package and one layette package to the countries of italy, France, Britain and Greece. Various clubs and individuals contributed to this cause. Service Awards were also given to students who had rendered outstanding service in more than one field in either the school or the community. This helped increase club interest, too. Each year the S. C. A. sponsors the Girls' Beauty Contest. This year it was presented on April the eighth. To cooperate with the Norfolk County S. C. A., we sent delegates to each of the five County meetings, arranged for exchange of assembly programs with another school, exchanged newspapers with all County schools and participated in the Scholarship Plan. Under the Scholarship Plan, we contributed fifteen dollars toward a scholarship of one hundred dollars to be given to some outstanding student in the County. Cradock submitted the name of one student who would be eligible for it. Four Council members and the sponsor attended the annual state meet- ing held in Richmond. There were: Henry Carter, Dwyane Black, Ruth Williams and Betty Cummings. The Student Council of 1948-49 has enjoyed a prosperous and enlightening year and we wish to thank the many teachers and students who so willingly made this possible. A. oHicers, has been used by the Student Council as a part of student government. This club has been a means of presenting to the students the plans and objectives of the Council. Our first objective was to nominate the members of the Honor Council as set up by the school Honor Code. In preparation for the school Christmas project, help to needy families in our community, each club undertook some part of the school plan-from decorating the auditorium and planning the assembly to collecting clothing, food and repair- in toys. gliiollowing a student body discussion on club improvement, the Presidents' Club carried out the suggestions. Each president tried to improve his club. A day was set aside for explaining the work and aims of each club to Freshmen and new students to encourage them to join more clubs. During February, in cooperation with the Student Council, six clubs helped promote the raising of money for CARE packages. 35115.00 was raised for this ur ose. P 'lihrough the Presidents' Club the Council was able to check on the activities of each club and make suggestions for improvement. Twice during the year the Beta Club held assemblies for the purpose of inducting new members. The present enrollment is 52. ln order to become a member, a student must be a Junior or Senior, have maintained a scholastic average of 88 in high school and have outstanding qualities of character, achievement, and commendable attitude. Our most outstanding accomplishment was to provide food and clothing for an entire family for the year. A Bake Sale was held February 19, 1949, for the purpose of raising money for our family and for sending a delegate to the State Beta Convention. This year three delegates were sent to the convention. An article concerning this Bake Sale was sent to the National Beta Journal. This club began in 19-L5 and was known for three years as the Literary Club, but in 19-18 the debaters drafted a constitution which was accepted by the school, making this a separate organization. Our added goal for this year has been to encourage and interest the Freshmen to become members as the more experienced members are Seniors this year and new members should be coached before our Seniors leave. Practice debates were scheduled this year with Deep Creek, Suffolk, and Portlock to prepare the debaters in the finals to go to Charlottesville. Three of last year's finals debaters returned this year for repeated competition-Henry Carter, Norma Gibbs and Ann Lee Terkeurst. Clyde Brennaman fills the vacancy offinishing a full team. Debaters that make the finals receive Old English A's and are eligible for the Monogram Club. Cradock debaters do not like to argue they just like to prove their point. In his talk, Bill told us what point of salesmanship to pay special attention to and what pitfalls to avoid. Mr. Haga, our principal, talked to us on the importance of school records and of keeping up to par in studies required for graduation. Mr. Stenzel, Guidance Director, discussed various opportunities open to the person really interested in the field of retailing. Social meetings have been limited to the two dances with the VVilson D. E. Club and to a few informal luncheon meetings of club members and sponsor be- fore work in the afternoon. A field trip was made to various stores, purpose-a shopping report. Each student visited a different store and wrote his observations on points of salesman- ship used or ignored by the sales person who waited on him. A fashion show is being planned by the club to be held sometime in May. Some of the D. E. girls will participate as models in the show. There will be a banquet held for the Employee and Employer. Much of the credit goes to the mothers who came to school and made them. Since then we have done many things to raise money to pay for our vestments. The Band and the Glee Club have given two joint concerts. No admission was charged but a free will oFfering was taken up. Money is still being raised for vestments. Among other things the members have made and sold candy during school hours and at special events such as plays in the auditorium. The Glee Club of Cradock High School sponsored the Glee Club of Randolph- Macon College. When the annual minstrel was cast the Glee Club supported it also. Every member of the Glee Club was in either the first or second act. There is also a girls' chorus, a boys' chorus, and a double sextette. These groups from the Glee Club have also given many programs in school and also outside. We shall continue to give as many programs as time will permit. Also, students interested in art but unable to take art would be considered for membership. We have so far accomplished .most of our objectives. Over the span of school months we have encouraged all persons at all times to develop their abilities and work with us and participate in all art club activities. To help the students appreciate beauty and culture we have had lectures and talks on art. VVe have also visited popular museums of art. Wle stimulate com- petition by competing in local and national contests. Plans are being made for an art exhibit. Each month we have an activity on a social basis. That first day in September when we started to school as 'Mighty Seniors is one I'll never forget. Everyone seemed quite excited, and yet there was a murmur of awe as if it just didn't seem possible that this was our last year of school. It took quite a while for everyone to settle down and get schedules straight, but soon things were running smoothly. Tell you more later in my next letter. Vilrite soon! MARY FXNNI-1 OCTOBER, 1950 Dear Iliaiy flnac: Thanks a lot for that nice letter T received from you yesterday. Since we're reminiscing about things we did last year, here are a few things I remember. Tn October, we had School Days pictures taken, and boy, were they swell. Also, we had a ventriloquist show in the auditorium that was side-splitting. l never laughed so much in my life. And Navy Day was best of all because it was a holi- day. Almost everyone went to the Navy Yard to see the sights, but some poeple took in a good movie, I heard. f??j. Also we had a Hag raising ceremony with the band and Boy Scouts participating. Do you remember the morning the students presented Mr. Kelly with a farewell gift? I'll never forget that day when our beloved pastor left us to go to Hopewell. VVell, Halloween came with its spooks and goblins and then October was gone. Tell me more in your next letter. So long! Paros NOVEMBER, 1950 Hi Paige: Remember what was happening last November this time? Sure was a surprise to everyone when Mr. Truman was re-elected. And it wasn't long after this that we took our Matu1'ity and Interest Tests. VVe sure found o11t how dumb we were! Armistice Day soon followed, and we found ourselves still in school. The Dramatic Club presented a swell play, The Skeleton YValks, which kept 11s on the edge of our seats. The lightning Hashed outside the windows, while bats and spiders flew through the room, and moved down the wall. Soon after the play, all the students had their pictures taken, X-rays, that is. We had three days to eat Turkey and other good things for Thanksgiving. Then, the month of November had slipped by, leaving only one month in the old year. l am looking forward to seeing you at Christmas this year. g l'iI,IPI'Y DECEMBER, 1950 Hello Flippy: VVell, December is here again, the month of snow and Santa Claus. And last December lst the Freshmen were cringing in their seats at the sight of the Mighty Seniors on SUPREME COURT DAY. lt was really a scream to see those poor innocent Freshmen given the works by the Senior Court Ofiicialsf' They got everything in their hair from talcum powder to strained spinach. VVe had some swell basketball games in December, too. YVe lost, of course, but they were still good. Then came the Christmas Holidays and we had two long weeks of rest and good times. Hope you have a Merry Christmas this year. Bye now, PAIGE JANUARY, 1950 Dear N orma Paige: Wlell, the new year finally started, and remember what grief and misery it brought to the unsuspecting students of C. H. S., mid-term exams. Prior to this we were all entertained by the Mormon Quartette, who was also with us in 19-18. After college tests and exams were over, we were given a three day holiday to oN THE CALENDAR recover while the teachers had a meeting. I-Ial I-Ia! January faded away and February brought more fond memories. Wlaiting for your next letter. FLIP IVEBRUARY, 1950 Dear Flip: Seems like we're having all the snow this year, but last year, hardly a flake. Sure do wish I could see some plays like those three we had last year in February. They really were good. And that Band and Glee Club Concert was swell, tool Oh, remember the Deep River Quartette? They were at Cradock last February, too. And on Valentine's Day a lot of the girls came to school with happy faces, thinking of the lacy cards and heart shaped boxes they had received. That was about all that happend, wasn't it? See you soon. P . C. IVIARCH, 1950 Hcflu P. C.: Last year March winds brought C. H. S. March lVIelodies, our annual minstrel. I remember what fun we had at practices in the auditorium, and how surprised everyone was at the hidden talent that was discovered that night. I remember, too, how we braved the snow storm to go to the Music and Magic show. This was also the eventful month when Barbara Bennett received an engagement ring from Cornell. April was quite full as I remember, so now it's your turn to write me. I'lLE'I'Cl-I APRIL, 1950 Ililvzz Fletclz: April l ool's Day last year was quite a lot of fun for the Seniors, wasn't it? All day we dressed up as babies and relived our childhood days. Night brought the Senior play, INho Killed Aunt Caroline? Remember what a hard time I had helping you learn your lines? The following week the beauties of C. H. S. lined the stage and f'Miss Cradock High was crownded. The Tidewater Track Meet was quite exciting, too. And the last of the month the Journalism Classes spon- sored the Boys' Beauty Contest. Clieauty was hardly the word for some of them lj I think April was the month most of us started to realize how near graduation really was. That's all for now. Bye. PAIGE MAY, 1950 Paige: The month of lVIay makes me think of all kinds of good things. We had another one of those swell Band and Glee Club Concerts. Cradock High should be extra proud of its music department. Then came the Iunior-Senior dance at the Country Club, the Senior Banquet and Class Night which brought more wonderful memories. Finally exams came again for the Seniors. Suddenly it was June and almost time for graduation. But 1I'll let you tell me about that next time. MARY IANNE I?I.E'TCHER JUNE, 1950 Dem' MH73' flmze: A It was just a year ago this month that we graduated from Cradock High School. Does it really seem possible? It dicln't then, either. Even when we had our Baccalaureate Sermon it seemed impossible. Not until I was walking down the aisle in my white cap and gown did I fully realize my high school days were almost over. It was rather sad, yet it brought the thought to my mind that I was at the beginning of a new horizon, a new life to make as I wanted it. And now, a year later, I know that even though at times it's tough, high school days are the best in your life. I-Ioping to see you soon. PAIGE CARR School Gobble it up! OHV to the Fire-J.
