The cl Admiral 194 ° CLASS HISTORY HK TIME was September, 1936; the place was Cradock High School; the characters were the class of 1940. What happened? Our class became freshmen. Our elation could not have been surpassed, but then came Supreme Court and we realized with a bang that our year was to be no bed ot roses. After our thorough initiation we were properly subdued and continued on our way. The first few days of this year were spent in a flurry of schedule cards and elections, followed by a frenzied dash for classes as only freshmen can dash. Our sponsor was Miss Phyllis Ferguson and our officers were President, Gerald Parsons, and Secretary, Grace Lawrence. Struggling through this first year we finally became “wise tools” in September, 1937. In choosing our sponsor we felt that our best bet was Miss Caroline Hardy. To serve with her we elected as Presi- dent, Gilbert Light; Vice-President, William Burnham; Secretary, Audrey kirkman; and Treasurer, Alice Bartlett. After an uneventful year we found that it was time to push on to our junior year. As our sponsors we had already chosen Mi ss Parthenia Richardson and Coach William Story. For our officers we elected as President, Billy Cooper; Vice-President, Grace Lawrence; Secretary, Duward Barkley; Treasurer, Wallace Williams. Feeling our importance we chose our motto, “As the times change, we change with them” and our colors, blue and white. During this year we selected with much discussion our class ring. After weeks of preparation we on the evening of May 19th presented the Seniors with an evening of dancing and fun. Our Junior-Senior was a gala affair, the first of its kind held in the new gymnasium. One of the highlights of this year was a weiner roast at a nearby seashore with Miss Richardson chaperoning. Believing this to be the happiest year we had ever spent we were hurled, all too soon, into our fourth and last year. Seniors at last! Could this be the lowly freshman class of 1936 who had quaked before the Su- preme Court? In three years we had taken on new and becoming dignity. We selected Miss Eliza- beth Wiley and Miss Fivelyn Byrd as sponsors. Our officers were William Burnham, President; Zeno Grimes, Vice-President; Doris Knowles, Secretary; and Wallace Williams, Treasurer. This year a new club popularly known as the Dance Club had been formed to teach and improve dancing. We Seniors like to feel that we really put it over. The “freshies” were duly treated with disdain on October 11th when we pronounced judgment on them during Supreme Court. On November ISth we accepted an invitation from the College of William and Mary to go to Williamsburg. During the day we visited buildings of the Restoration, had lunch on the campus, and saw the annual homecoming football game in which William and Mary defeated Washington and Lee University. With the feeling that there was no time like the present, early in October rehearsals of the Senior Play were started under the direction of Miss Ruth Haverty. The play was a riproaring comedy entitled Our Girls. Presented on December 1st the production was a huge success, starring Martin Rollo, Billy Cooper and Chester King as “Our Girls,” with a supporting cast of Frances Williams, Catherine Dale, Gertrude Melvin and Wallace Williams. After stiff mid-term exams we hastened on toward our goal. The Admiral staff was chosen in preparation for the best annual in Cradock’s history. On February 23 a full house gave a warm re- ception to the Odds and Ends minstrel, which combined Miss Haverty’s fine direction and an all-star cast of many Seniors. With no more than the usual heated discussions, we selected invitations and caps and gowns. We turned from business to pleasure when on March 8th we spent an all too brief evening packed with spills and thrills skating at Virginia Beach. On April 2nd we returned to our second childhood to celebrate “Baby Day.” We were honored guests at the annual Junior-Senior Dance on April 26th. All our sorrows were placed in a coffin and lowered into a dusty grave at the Senior Burial. We finished the year with the usual functions, the Senior Banquet, the Baccalaureate Sermon, Class Night and Commencement. Thus our history in Cradock High School ends. With the sincere hope that we have done as much to improve our Alma Mater as she has done to improve us we say farewell. Rose Everton

The cl Admiral 1940 CLASS PROPHECY N PREPARING this prophecy, classmates and friends, I have received assistance from the famous crystal-gazer, Madame Seemore. 1 have here her reply to an inquiry which I made concerning the future of our class: ‘‘Dear Prophet of the Class of 1940 : “You recall having written to me some time ago about the future of your classmates. “I, Madame Seemore, assure you that the following data are absolutely true: “Bill Burnham, President of your class, will always continue in his role of authority for he will be a great business man. He will never lack a stenographer because he will find the fairer sex willing to work for him at all times. “Rose Everton 1 see entering a large building, a college. But she will not be satisfied with this kind of work for her operatic ambitions will lead her to fame. “Bobby Thomas and Ingvar I.iljegren five years from now will be managers of a Big Star Market , having risen from the position of delivery boys. “Pearl Wright and Edith Surles will be owners of the Curly Top Beauty Salon. “William Kayton, Floyd Mitchell, Bob Cutchins, Arnold Barrow and Tom Cutchin are lovers of the sea and so their future will be in the Navy. “Gene Shepard, Frances Williams, Oneida Weaver, Duward Barkley and Norman Moore will find their careers at Maury High School, where Gene will teach Mathematics; Frances, Physical Edu- cation; Oneida, Music; Norman, Industrial Arts; and Duward will be head coach. “Harold Treakle’s experience as a school leader will bring him success as a politician. “Doris Knowles and Irene Edmondson, laziest of your class, will be clerks in a Five and Ten Cent Store. “Francis Matthews will manage a prosperous lumber business with Grace Lawrence as his sec- retary and Hamilton Oliver as night watchman. “Gladys Lauer, Dorothy Buhls, Juanita Boothe and Maxiene Baker will find positions as clerks in a large department store. “Chester King will be the Rudy Vallee of a new generation. He will have the voice with it. “I see Mary Tarr as the Dorothy Dix of her time and Joseph Cartier as star reporter for the New York Times. “James Miller, Pat Horan and Nathan Weaver have chosen noble occupations, for they will till the soil, solving all the problems of farm relief. “Virginia McAllister will be a popular cinema star with Zeno Grimes as her leading man. “Bill Cherry will lead his own orchestra, having Jean Hurdle as his pianist and Rose Winn as his soloist. “Gertrude Smith will be a famous woman physician with Frances Sedath, Ruby Lawrence, Cather- ine Horan and Elsie Bazemore on the staff of nurses in her private hospital. “For Douglas Sadler, headlines will blaze forth Edison’s Successor Found when he discovers a light ray that can be seen through the thickest of fog. “Having high-minded ambitions, Annie Wellener and Joe Anne Coggin will spend their futures literally in the air, as airplane stewardesses. “Wallace Williams, Eddie Curtin and Robert Goodwin, although they do not participate in athletics themselves, are extremely fond of sports. They will attend the World’s Series games as sports writers, giving special attention to Billy Cooper and Billy Gettier, opposing pitchers, and Buddy Lewis and Gerry Parsons, home run kings. “Jeannette Ridgway and Roxana Simpson, man-haters of their class, will not always be able to resist the charms of the opposite sex and will be happy housewives. “Nowell Martin wdl be well-established in the Professional Building as an Attorney-at-Law and Mildred Rogers will be his secretary. “Fanny Woodard and Beatrice Price will live long and happily with the men of their choice. “In a cross-country auto race will be Clifford Lawson, speed maniac of the age, with Ellis Knowles as his chief mechanic. “In the near future the whole country will laugh with Gertrude Melvin, most renowned of all comediennes. “Billy Jane Cranfield will be conducting the Children ' s Hour on a national radio network. “Doris Gordon and Phyllis Higgins will revolutionize women’s clothes as famous dress designers in New York City. “Herbert Ortt, Billy Bevan and Martin Rollo will become joint owners of the Phillip Mvtank Service Station. “And, last of all, dear prophet, here is a hint concerning your own future.
