The Qxydffzzral 0 1939 FOOTBALL El El OUR great backs behind a mighty line led the Cradock Admirals' 1938 football edition to an Eastern District Class B Championship, and a runner-up berth in the State ra'ce. This team, with a varsity backfield consisting of Flash Homer, Dickie Leach, Buddy Jenson and Dinky Barkley, amassed a total of 280 points to the opponents' score of 84. From Hank to Hank we possessed one of the best lines in Tidewater and gave only two scores by line-play. Several games highlighted the season: South Norfolk, age-old rival, was humbled by a 13 to 0 defeat, while Al Hawkins' strong Suffolk Peanuts fared better with a scoreless tie. In a driving rain, the Admirals fought valiantly, but lost to Fredericksburg No college game could ever possess the color and thrill that this high school fracas olfered. From the opening whistle to the end, both teams fought doggedly. Three passes were completed to spell defeat. These three aerial bombards were received in the closing minutes of the game. As far as sportsmanship goes, no higher brand could have been obtained. Spirit, fight and fair play gave to Cradock High School one of the most colorful and powerful football teams of a decade. Scores of non-experienced students turned out for practice, but as the drills grew longer and more strenuous the large group dwindled down to a faithful few who stayed on throughout the rest of the season, winning Five out of six conference games and tieing with Norview for the champion- ship of Norfolk County.
