' ■ :v. ■ i ■ . t Mayweed ©ouirty Public Library Waynesville . 1955 The Annual Staff has in these few pages tried to capture some parts of the work, the play, the seriousness and the gaiety which have made our high school days a magic time. We hope that as you turn through the pages of the Highlander in years to come, it will bring the joy of reminiscence to all who remember the Class of 1955. We would like to thank all the merchants for their co¬ operation in making this annual possible. The association we have had with them has been a real pleasure. To our beloved teachers we say, Thanks for your pa¬ tience with the staff and for your gracious attitude toward making our Highlander a success. We, the seniors of 1955, wish to dedicate our annual, the Highlander, to the memory of Mr. Tom Leather- wood whom misfortune overtook Sep¬ tember 26, 1954, and carried away. He was active in civic affairs, community affair s , church work, and at his death was serving tirelessly on the board of education. He was in¬ strumental in securing for us the new gym which we will enjoy in the future. We are grateful to him for his interest in our education and express our gratitude for his unlimited efforts. Fifty- very proud youngsters gazed at the bigness of the school and the mighty upper Classmen. Slowly we mounted the ladder step by step until we graduated into high school. Then our most enjoyable school days really began. There were thir¬ ty-two members in our Freshman Class, and we soon got into the swing of high school life under the watchful eye of Mr. Morrow. Martha Mathews was chosen as President. Before we knew it the year was completed, and we started our second year in high school as wise sophomores. With Claudia Crawford as class president and Mr. Ross as adviser, we began to get ready for our Junior year. After a short vacation we returned as Juniors with a lot of impor¬ tant events looming before us. We must have been a headache to the teach¬ ers as we were more interested in the big social events, as the junior- senior banquet, than in our studies. Also, class rings had to be ordered and the class play, Aunt Samanthy Rules the Roost, had to be given. Mr. Nesbittwas assigned the responsibility of guiding the boys and Mrs. No¬ land, the girls. Steven Walker was selected to lead the class during this important year. Our banquet was held, with the theme Good Luck. All who attended it will long remember this grand event. Then came the eventful August of 1954, and we were at last dignified Seniors with Mr. McElroy as our advisor. Martha Mathews was elected to guide us through our final year with Johnny Crawford, vice president, to assist her. The publication of the school paper and annual, the class play, the selection of invitations, and graduation preparations were the main factors standing before us and our journey ' s end. The junior-senior banquet given in our honor was wonderful, and it was really heart-warming to be honored in this way. Graduation day came swiftly by, and we knew that a mysterious por¬ tion of life, the future, was before us. We hope that we can make a greater history than this through our deeds in the future. To the faculty we leave our love and respect-also any apologies we may have failed to make to atone for misbehavior. To the whole student body a tinge of envy that you will have the new gymnasium that w e had hoped for. Now, individually, the seniors bequeath these prized possessions: I, Jack Bishop, will my fighting rooster to Way Kinsland. I, Bobby Brown, will my shop tools to Doyle Brown. I, David Brown, will my quietness to Jimmy Lee Best. I, Palmer Caldwell, will my smoking period to Gene Parks. I, Don Chambers, will my Hot-Rod license to Tommy Hannah. I, Edith Cogdill, will my awkwardness to Louise Best. I, Johnny Crawford, will my school bus to Harley Caldwell. I, R. A. Gillett, will my temper to Louise Presnell. I, Billie Greene, will my good school spirit to Grover Lee Bradshaw. I, Clarine Greene, will my cuteness to Jean Crawford. I, Kathleen Hoglen, will my smooching license to Annetta Ferguson. I, Betty Haney, will my smile to Adeline Best. I, Ray James, will my ping-pong ball and paddle to Tommy Kirkpa¬ trick. I, Eugen e Jones, will my wavy hair to Autrey Best. I, Martha Mathews, will my typewriter to Martha Ann Caldwell. I, Polly Kay McElroy, will my ball suit to Helen Hill. I, Shirley McElroy, will my friendliness to Peggy Sue Greene. I, Margaret Jane Morrow, will my chrocheting needle to Carolyn Bryson. I, Kenneth Earl Parks, will my long tongue to Virgil Mathews. I, Kenneth Parks, will my mechanic ' s tools to George Kirkpatrick. I, Frances Sanford, will my luckiness to Shirley Plemmons. I, Lorraine Sanford, will my nick-name to Barbara Smith. I, Carroll Smith, will my brunette girl friend to John Evans. I, Mary Ann Sutton, will my blonde hair to Katherine Beasley. I, Steven Walker, will my ball suit to Roger McElroy. I, Frances Yates, will my neatness to Doris Messer. On this the first day of February, 1955 I place my signature. T estator I was studing my English Literature assignment on Richard Steele and had just reached the point where it said he was able to foretell the future, when I fell asleep. I ' ll never combine pick¬ les and cake again, because of the dream I had, (In fact, I think maybe I should leave off cake completely because I am edging onto the plump side. People used to say I had an hour glass fig¬ ure, but now the sands of time have started drifting down.) Oh well, back to the subject on hand, the dream. (And what a dream!) I shall try to record it here to the best of my ability: Don ' t ask me how come cause I don ' t know, but in the dream I saw Richard Steele. There he stood, telescope in hand and miner ' s head lamp on his head. He adjusted his telescope to one eye, moved the miner ' s lamp slightly, and began to speak to me: I see you in a pair of jeans sorting paper for the Champion Paper and Fiber Company. There 1 s another girl in a nurse uniform. It ' s Polly McElroy Pippins going about her duties at the Knoxville General Hospital. There comes a young fellow in an Air Force Captain ' s uniform. (I was wondering if the young fellow was an Air Force Captain, or if he had on a borrowed uniform.) He entered the air foree the winter after graduation and has advanced rapidly in rank. His name is Jack Bishop. Now my telescope focuses on a radio studio. A pair of famous singers are before the mi¬ crophone singing a duet. They are Lorraine Sanford and Betty Jones Haney. Lorraine has won acclaim as a singer at the Grand Ole ' Opera. A geometry teacher appears before my telescope. (I still wonder how he could tell a geom¬ etry teacher on sight. All teachers look alike to me.) She is Martha Mathews, and she is teach¬ ing at Crabtree Iron-Duff. The next little piece of revealing the future which Mr. Steele did Really bowled me over. I see Margaret Jane Morrow as owner of the General Motors Company. There are car windows with Venetian blinds and curtains on them and the hubcaps have landscape scenes on them. The telescope is directed upon a swanknight club in New Jersey, called ' Foxie ' s! The owner and club operator is Kenneth Earl Parks, better known as Foxie. He is also well known in the singing world and rumor has it that he will soon be taking Hot Shot Elmer ' s place. Frances Emma Yates is teaching Home Economics at Lee Edwards High School. Frances Sanford and Shirley McElroy are operators of ' Eat and Read ' shoppe. This is a combination candy and book store. Don Chambers is owner of ' Chambers ' Chemical Supply ' s. Any kind of chemicals for any need that you can name he has it. (Anybody want to whip up an A-Bomb?) ' Mary Ann Sutton has taken Miss Rippitoe ' s business over at the Welfare Office. It is pop¬ ularly thought that she is the best yet. The telescope centers on a huge garage in Waynesville, North Carolina. Over the door is the sign: Ray Can Fix It. The owner and operator is Ray James. Farther down the street is a large hardware store called, ' You Name It, I Got It ' . This store is owned by Carroll Smith, Palmer Caldwell is the County Farm Agent for Haywood County. His advice has increased the yearly profits for many rural families. I see a large dairy farm. It is owned by Billy Greene. He started out with just the land his father owned and has added to it, little by little, until now he has the largest dairy farm in Hay¬ wood County, Edith Cogdill is sales manager of Eagles 5 10£ Store. She has become quite famous for the sale of her own original perfume. Steven Walker is agriculture teacher at Crabtree Iron-Duff School. He seems to be more popular with the Home Ec. students than with the ag. boys. It seems that David Brown has taken John Brown ' s place over. He did this in order to be with Pauline Carver. Bobby Brown and Kenneth Parks are combine Head Managers over Charlie Ray ' s Super Market. Johnnie Crawford is now driving the Enka work bus for his dad. (Don ' t you want to work at Enka?) I see Clarine Green shearing sheep on Upper Crabtree with Benny Best on their farm. Nowthe scene shifts to Duke University where I see Eugene Jones as a Mathematics teach¬ er. He is also engaged in helping invent a new type of defense weapon. (Stand by for Action!) Ihave awaken now and never again will I mix pickles, cake and English! (At least, not until I forget this dream and believe me, that will be quite some time!) By Kathleen Hoglen ANNUAL STALL EDITOR IN CHIEF . . Edith Cogdill ASST. EDITOR . . .
