MERRELL Vice President NA IDA BU RC H History l l In August, 1952, 64 Freshmen began their studies at Crab Orchard High School. 'I'his was an event we had looked forward to for many years, We immediately elected officers who were Barbara Taylor, Charles Rector, and Carolyn Holmes. Three boys made the basketball team that year, They were Donald Reps, Dale I-lanks, and Charles Rec- tor, Three Homecoming queen candidates were chosen that year, One of which was Barbara Taylor, a Freshman. We began our Sophomore year with 34 enrolled which was considerably smaller because many of those who had come to our school from Creal Springs were now going to Marion, Our officers were Larry Shaw, Gary Nolen and Gene Parks, The Homecoming queen was chosen from our class in 1953, Her Majesty, Velma Graves, ruled the sports activities during that year, We also contributed a queen candidate, Mary Springs. Sophomore boys on the basketball team were Larry Shaw, Dale Hanks, J. W. Merrell and Paul Curry. Our class favorites were Janet Cox and Paul Curry, and Naida Burch was named as one of the most attractive, Shirley Borum--most athletic, and Alice Parks--friendliest. There were 36 in our class during our Junior year. Our class favorites were Larry Shaw and Shirley Borum. Other school favorites were Velma Graves--most studious, Mary Springs--most likely to succeed Naida Burch--most attractive, Colleen Wharry--most athletic, and Kay Springhart--most flirtatious, Josephine Scott, a Junior was chosen as our Homecoming queen. Our class officers were Gene Parks, Alice Parks, and Shirley Borum. We contributed Ronald Bundrell. I. W, Merrell, Dale Hanks, and Larry Shaw to the basketball squad, and Velma Graves and Alice Parks were cheerleaders, As we end our high school days, we have 31 in our class and our officers are J, W. Merrell, Naida Burch, and Betty Beasley, We chose Janet Cox and Larry Shaw as our favorites. and other school favorites from our class are: Naida Burch and Larry Shaw--most attractive. I. W. Merrell and Shirley Borum--most athletic, Mary Springs and Gary Nolen--most likely to succeed, and Alice Parks--friendliest. Again this year, the Homecoming queen, Mary Springs, came from our class as did two attendants, Naida hitch and Shirley Borum. J. W. Merrell, Dale Hanks, Ronald Bundren, and Larry Shaw are on the varsity basketball team, and Velma Graves and Alice Parks are varsity team cheerleaders, We have a Student Council for the first time, and our representatives are Larry Shaw--President, Gary Nolen--Vice President, Janet Cox-Secretary, and Mary Springs--Treasurer, Larry Shaw and Gary Nolen were elected to represent the Student Council in Chicago at the Student Council Convention, Mary Springs received the D.A,R, and Valedictorian, ------ and Janet Cox was chosen as Salutatorian. By - Shirley Bell Senior Klass Prophecy Betty Beasley now works in a beauty shop as a hair stylist and also gives advice on how to keep your figure trim, Velma Graves has created a new dance. She hasn't named it yet but it really sends her places. Kay Springhart is married for her 3rd time and lives on a ranch in Colorado, Ronald Parks has started giving dancing lessons, he specializes in the new 'Rock and Roll' type of dance. Mary Springs is now the famous night club singer and she has two shows nightly at the 'Flamingo Club in St. Louis. Ronald Evetts has turned out to be a song writer, His latest is 'Lonesome and Disgusted Gene Parks now owns a horse ranch south of Crab Orchard and has started a new system, He rides cows to round up the horses, Betty Odum is now spending a ten day honeymoon in Bermuda with her husband, Dale Hanks who is owner of the new radio station WIND at Crab Orchard. Gary fChickenj Nolen was sent to Sing Sing for robbing a bank to buy bubble gum, Lyman Tanner is now the football coach at U. C. L. A. He got his experience from C. 0. H. S. Don Martin is owner of the new Dykersburg Hotel and Nina Sims works there as head waitress. A 31C J, W, Merrill who has recently served 20 years in the U, S, Air Force has decided to settle down to a quiet and happy married life with his wife in Honolulu. Naida Burch has just received the position of Airline Stewardess of T, W, A. Sue Hosmon was elected Miss America of 1956 and she is now living a happy married life with George Parks. William Griffin is now a jockey and Ronald Bundren, who is married to Janet Cox, is his manager, Colleen Wharry and Bill Turner are married and having trouble meeting the bills for their redheaded triplets. Shirley Bell and Shirley Borum are the owners of the Shirley B, Department Store in Connecticut. Larry Shaw and Delores Furlow own the Cadilac Corporation and their motto is 'Come to us when your wages are low and you don't have much 'dough'. Judy Rentfro is a Homemaking teacher and is learning how to cook with the new electronic oven. Alice Parks and Iva Hinchcliff have gone to nurses training and they are now registered nurses at the Poordo Memorial Hospital.
